Seasonal Events

Three weeks after NHK’s morning drama series Blossom (ブラッサム) — modeled on the novelist Chiyo Uno and starring Shizuka Ishibashi — began airing on September 28, 2026, lodging in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, where the story begins, is running at an estimated average occupancy of 91.5% for stays on October 1–19 according to MetroEngines Research (10 properties / 766 rooms, based on major booking-site listings). That is roughly 10 points above September’s 81.7% (9 properties / 616 rooms). Saturdays were 80–90% sold two weeks before the stay date, and October 10, the first night of a three-day weekend, had just one room left the day before. This article first confirms the broadcast schedule and Iwakuni City’s visitor-readiness measures from official sources, then examines booking curves before and after the premiere, estimated ADR as the pre-broadcast baseline, room stock within 2km of Kintaikyo Bridge, Iwakuni Station and Shin-Iwakuni Station, and the visitor-number changes published by previous asadora (NHK morning drama) locations.

About the data in this article
• ADR (average daily rate) = estimated settled rate (tax-excluded equivalent), calculated by applying segment-specific adjustment factors to the lowest-plan price each property publishes on OTAs (per room, 2 guests, tax included). Checked against property-level results disclosed by listed hotel REITs (91 properties, most recent 3 months), the median error is about 7%. These are estimates and differ from each property’s actual settled prices and accounting figures.
• Area-level ADR (prefecture / municipality) is the median of the estimated settled rates of the properties covered (the level of a typical property in the area).
• Where listed prices are cited, they are per-room rates for 2 guests (tax included).
• OCC (occupancy) = share of sold rooms in total rooms in the area (estimate based on OTA sales inventory).
• Source: MetroEngines Research (continuously tracks OTA public prices for about 168,000 properties, of which about 27,000 are confirmed as operating)
• Booking curve = change in remaining rooms on major booking sites in the run-up to the check-in date. LT (lead time) = days until check-in (LT1 = the day before). This article uses only LT45–LT1 observations; same-day and over-45-day observations are excluded.
• Occupancy (OTA-listed inventory basis, estimated) = share of sold rooms in total rooms in the area (estimate based on OTA sales inventory). The panel is a fixed set of properties that list at least 30% of their rooms on major booking sites; figures reflect how fast OTA inventory sells and differ from each property’s actual total occupancy.
• Property and room counts are drawn from the roughly 27,000 operating properties tracked by MetroEngines Research and are not a full census. Booking-progress figures are as observed on October 18–19, 2026 and will change as stay dates approach.
Key Takeaways
  • — Estimated occupancy after the premiere: 91.5% (October 1–19, 2026 average; 10 properties / 766 rooms, based on major booking-site listings). About 10 points above pre-broadcast September (9 properties / 616 rooms) at 81.7%.
  • — Saturdays around 90% sold two weeks out. October 10 (first night of a three-day weekend) was 94.6% at 14 days out with one room left the day before; October 17 was 97.9% at 14 days out. Pre-broadcast September 12 reached only 80.4% even the day before.
  • — Estimated settled ADR was about ¥6,200 in September 2026 (N=16 properties), +6.6% YoY. This is the pre-broadcast baseline, ¥2,000–3,000 below Shimonoseki (about ¥9,200) and Yamaguchi City (about ¥8,100).
  • — Two layers of supply. Within 2km of Kintaikyo Bridge are 4 operating ryokan with 100 rooms (79 of them at ¥25,000+); within 2km of Iwakuni Station are 8 properties with 929 rooms, mostly business hotels; there are no operating properties within 2km of Shin-Iwakuni Station.
  • — In Matsue (Bakebake), the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum saw about 1.7x visitors and citywide visitor arrivals rose about 8.9%. The question for Iwakuni is whether it can convert more visits into overnight stays through two-night packages and higher-tier rooms.

Broadcast schedule and Iwakuni’s visitor readiness — from the September 19 shuttle bus to the premiere public viewing

Let us first establish the basic facts from official sources. Blossom is the second-half FY2026 entry in NHK’s morning drama series; the heroine, Tama Hano (played by Shizuka Ishibashi), is set to have been born in Iwakuni in 1897 (Meiji 30), and episode 1 opens in Iwakuni in 1908 (Meiji 41). The series began on Monday, September 28, 2026, and airs on NHK General at 8:00 a.m. Monday–Saturday (Saturday is a weekly recap) and on BS at 7:30 a.m. Monday–Friday (Akita Sakigake Shimpo, September 26, 2026). Because the series runs for six months, exposure will continue through March 2027, changing in character from the early episodes set in Iwakuni to later episodes in which the town is referred to as the heroine’s “hometown” after she moves to Tokyo.

Iwakuni City started preparing eight months before the broadcast. At the mayor’s regular press conference on January 26, 2026, the public-private “Chiyo Uno Drama Tourism Promotion Executive Committee” unveiled the promotional title “Iwakuni Chiyo Sanpo: A Little Literature, A Little Happiness — A Journey Through Chiyo Uno” and a logo, and explained that it would roll out banners and posters, a dedicated website and PR video, a stamp rally around sites such as Chiyo Uno’s birthplace, taxi wraps, and free logo licensing to private businesses (Iwakuni City mayor’s regular press conference, January 26, 2026). The “Chiyo Sanpo” website lists walking routes linking places associated with Chiyo Uno and local restaurants (Iwakuni City Tourism Promotion Division), and from Saturday, September 19, just before the premiere, a free shuttle bus has run on weekends and holidays, with no reservation required, between the Kintaikyo Shimogawara parking lot, Chiyo Uno’s birthplace and the Iwakuni School Education Museum (Yamaguchi Prefecture Tourism Federation). On September 28, the day of the first episode, a public viewing and talk show were held in Iwakuni (Iwakuni City Tourism Promotion Division).

Another factor overlaps the same period. The Yamaguchi Destination Campaign (Yamaguchi DC) run by six JR Group companies and Yamaguchi Prefecture is in its main phase from October 1 to December 31, 2026, after a pre-campaign in the same period last year (Yamaguchi Prefecture Tourism Federation, Yamaguchi DC feature). The high October occupancy shown below results from several factors landing in the same month — the premiere, Yamaguchi DC, autumn leisure travel, autumn foliage at Kintaikyo and traffic related to the Iwakuni base — and cannot be attributed to any single one. ADR and booking progress by municipality during the main Yamaguchi DC period are covered in Yamaguchi DC 2026: Hagi ADR +39.6% vs Yamaguchi City +3.1%.

Estimated occupancy after the premiere — 91.5% average for October 1–19, with weekdays repeatedly in the 97% range

So how did the way rooms fill change before and after the premiere? Figure 1 overlays September and October daily occupancy estimates (OTA-listed inventory basis) for MetroEngines Research’s fixed cohort in Iwakuni. In September the 29-day average was 81.7% (9 properties / 616 rooms); apart from the Respect for the Aged Day three-day weekend of September 19–21, which hit the ceiling at 98.7%, 100% and 100%, the rhythm was around 80% on weekdays and 65–69% on Sundays in the first two-thirds of the month. In October, the average for the 1st–19th rose to 91.5% (10 properties / 766 rooms), with mid-week days lining up around 97%: Tuesday the 6th at 97.9%, Wednesday the 7th at 97.9% and Thursday the 8th at 96.5%. Saturday the 10th, the first night of the Sports Day three-day weekend, reached 99.9%, and Sunday the 11th 96.2% — more than 20 points above the early-to-mid September Sundays (65–69%).

Two caveats are needed, however. First, the panel expanded from 9 properties / 616 rooms in September to 10 properties / 766 rooms in October, as a new station-front property that soft-opened in June joined the observation set, so month-to-month comparison is not strictly like-for-like. Second, this occupancy is estimated from how fast inventory listed on major booking sites sells; rooms not listed are counted on the sold side, so it tends to run higher than actual occupancy. Even so, the September–October gap measured on the same definition is clear, and it is fair to read that October in Iwakuni brought a change: more days near full on weekdays as well as weekends.

Saturday booking curves — after the premiere, 90% sold two weeks out; one room left the night before the three-day weekend

Next, let us compare how quickly bookings come in using Saturday booking curves. Figure 2 shows estimated occupancy from 45 days before the stay date to the day before, overlaying pre-broadcast Saturday, September 12; post-broadcast Saturdays October 3, 10 and 17; and the upcoming Saturdays October 24 and November 14. Pre-broadcast September 12 stood at 68.5% at 14 days out and only 80.4% even the day before (123 of 629 rooms left). By contrast, October 3 was a step higher at 77.2% at 14 days out and 85.8% the day before (109 of 766 rooms left), and October 10, the first night of the three-day weekend, was 94.6% at 14 days out, 99.0% at 7 days out and sold down to one room (99.9%) the day before. October 17, unrelated to any holiday, also reached 97.9% at 14 days out and held around 97% through the day before.

Upcoming Saturdays are also tracking ahead of pre-broadcast levels as of the observation date. Saturday, October 24 was at 90.6% at 6 days out (72 of 766 rooms left) and Saturday, October 31 at 89.2% at 13 days out (83 rooms left) — already above, two weeks out, the level September Saturdays reached the day before. Saturday, November 21, the first night of the Labor Thanksgiving Day three-day weekend, was 88.0% at 34 days out (92 rooms left), up about 20 points in 11 days from 68.5% at 45 days out. Meanwhile, Saturday, November 14 was 71.3% at 27 days out and Saturday, November 28 57.7% at 41 days out, both still building. On weekdays, Wednesday, October 28 was 82.4% at 10 days out and Wednesday, November 18 52.3% at 31 days out, tracing a gentler curve than Saturdays.

To repeat, this pace cannot be attributed to the drama alone. October is the first month of Yamaguchi DC’s main phase and the start of the foliage season at Kintaikyo, and traffic related to the Iwakuni base is a constant source of weekday demand. Still, the observed fact that September Saturdays measured under the same conditions landed around 80% the day before, while post-broadcast Saturdays reach that level two weeks out, is meaningful for building a sales plan.

Estimated ADR about ¥6,200 in pre-broadcast September, +6.6% YoY — vs. about ¥9,200 in Shimonoseki and ¥8,100 in Yamaguchi City

What about rates? Iwakuni’s estimated settled ADR (verified-history basis) was about ¥6,200 in September 2026 (N=16 properties), up 6.6% from about ¥5,800 a year earlier (N=15 properties). Because the series began on September 28, this figure contains almost no drama effect and can be treated as the pre-broadcast baseline. In January–September 2026, seven of nine months beat the prior year, with large gains in January (+10.4%) and February (+13.2%); only summer July (−0.8%) and August (−4.0%) fell below the prior year. The highest month in the past year was November 2025, in foliage season, at about ¥6,700; how far this November exceeds that level will be the first rate-based yardstick of the broadcast effect.

Set against the prefecture’s main cities, Iwakuni’s level comes into focus. In September 2026, estimated settled ADR was about ¥9,200 in Shimonoseki (N=43 properties) and about ¥8,100 in Yamaguchi City (N=29 properties); Iwakuni’s ¥6,200 is ¥2,000–3,000 lower than both. Iwakuni’s median reflects the cluster of business hotels in front of the station, while the top two ryokan around Kintaikyo list at roughly ¥50,000–70,000 (all-plan average, tax included) — a separate tier from the station area. This two-tier structure was laid out in our previous article; this article focuses on occupancy during the broadcast period.

Within 2km of Kintaikyo Bridge, Iwakuni Station and Shin-Iwakuni Station — upper-tier rooms concentrated in 79 rooms on the Kintaikyo side

When a viewer decides to stay in Iwakuni, where is the capacity? We counted room stock within a 2km radius of each of Kintaikyo Bridge, the symbol of the filming location; Iwakuni Station, the gateway on the conventional line; and Shin-Iwakuni Station on the Shinkansen. Room stock in this article covers lodging properties with 10 or more rooms (excluding leisure hotels) within 2,000m of each point; “operating” means properties with selling prices confirmed on major booking sites in the last three months (August–October 2026) (as of October 20, 2026; MetroEngines Research).

Within 2km of Kintaikyo, 4 of 5 listed properties (100 of 114 rooms) are operating, all of them ryokan. Of these, Iwakuni Kokusai Kanko Hotel (岩国国際観光ホテル; 66 rooms, opened 1952) listed at about ¥69,900 in September 2026 (all-plan average, tax included) and Hangetsuan (半月庵; 13 rooms, opened 1869) at about ¥49,900; together they account for 79 rooms in the Midscale band (¥25,000) or above. Within 2km of Iwakuni Station, 8 of 15 listed properties (929 of 1,115 rooms) are operating: 7 business hotels with 917 rooms and 1 ryokan with 12 rooms. By listed-price band, the Economy band (¥15,000 to under ¥25,000) holds 290 rooms at Hotel Alpha-1 Iwakuni (155 rooms) and Green Rich Hotel Iwakuni Ekimae (135 rooms), the Budget band (under ¥15,000) holds 639 rooms, and there are no rooms at ¥25,000+ near the station. Within 2km of Shin-Iwakuni Station there is 1 listed property with 26 rooms, with no selling prices confirmed in the last three months. Viewers arriving by Shinkansen must travel to Kintaikyo or the Iwakuni Station area to stay.

Station-area supply is also moving. APA Hotel Yamaguchi Iwakuni Ekimae-Nishi (アパホテル〈山口岩国駅前西〉; 150 rooms, 11-story RC building, 5 minutes’ walk from Iwakuni Station) soft-opened on June 5, 2026, adding capacity centered on 118 single rooms (APA Hotel press release, June 5, 2026). Together with Toyoko Inn Iwakuni Station West Exit (240 rooms, opened 2019) and HOTEL R9 The Yard Iwakuni (31 rooms, opened 2023), properties opened since the late 2010s account for 421 rooms, about 45% of operating rooms near the station.

Published visitor numbers at past asadora locations — Makino Botanical Garden 2.2x, Matsue’s Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum 1.7x

How much could visits to Iwakuni grow over the broadcast period? Here we cite only figures published by municipalities and facilities. In Kochi Prefecture, setting of the first-half FY2023 series Ranman, annual visitors to the Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden rose about 2.2x (+251,896) from 214,304 in FY2022 to 466,200 in FY2023, and the prefecture’s evaluation document states that “as a result of publicity and outreach triggered by the morning drama Ranman, visitors from inside and outside the prefecture and group visitors increased” (Kochi Prefecture, “Evaluation of Operations by Designated Managers of Public Facilities,” November 7, 2024). For the first-half FY2025 series Anpan, the Kami City Takashi Yanase Memorial Museum recorded 277,176 visitors in FY2025 (309.8% of the prior year), the most since it opened in 1996 — but the museum was fully closed for renovation from November 2024 to March 2025, so the multiple includes a rebound from that closure (the museum’s FY2025 Annual Report).

Matsue, in the same Chugoku region as Iwakuni and setting of the immediately preceding second-half FY2025 series Bakebake, offers the closest reference for reading trends during a broadcast. According to the FY2025 activity report (draft) published by Matsue’s promotion council, the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum drew about 143,000 visitors in January–December 2025 (about 1.7x the prior year) and the Lafcadio Hearn Former Residence about 103,000 (about 2.6x); in January–March 2026, as the broadcast entered its second half, the museum rose further to about 50,000 (about 2.9x YoY) and the former residence to about 48,000 (about 5.8x). Matsue’s citywide visitor arrivals in 2025 were about 9.51 million (up about 8.9% YoY) and tourism spending about ¥62.2 billion (up about 3.6%) (Matsue Promotion Council for the Lafcadio Hearn and Setsu Drama, “FY2025 Activity Report (Draft)”). The pattern: associated sites 2–3x in the broadcast year, accelerating further in the following January–March, with citywide arrivals up just under 10%.

Iwakuni’s starting point is also worth confirming. According to Yamaguchi Prefecture’s tourist flow survey, Iwakuni’s tourist count grew two years running, from 2,494,528 in 2023 to 2,548,705 in 2024 (102.2% YoY, driven by more Iwakuni Kintaikyo Airport passengers) and 2,657,988 in 2025 (104.3%, driven by the Yamaguchi DC pre-campaign and more airport passengers) (Yamaguchi Prefecture, “Trends in Overnight Guests and Tourists in Yamaguchi Prefecture, 2025 (Summary),” July 6, 2026; 2024 edition). Applying the Matsue example naively, a multiple of visits to associated sites and roughly 10% more citywide would be the benchmark for the broadcast period. The difference is that Matsue has lodging capacity in Lake Shinji Onsen and Tamatsukuri Onsen, while Iwakuni’s operating rooms total about 1,000 across the station area and the Kintaikyo side. For Iwakuni, the issue is less how much visitors increase than how many day-trippers can be converted into overnight stays.

Opportunities for lodging operators — extending early Saturday sell-through to weekdays and second nights

To sum up, since the premiere Iwakuni’s lodging has entered a phase in which Saturdays reach 90% two weeks out and October weekdays repeatedly hit the 97% range. On the other hand, estimated ADR was about ¥6,200 in September, below the prefecture’s main cities, the station area’s Economy band has only 290 rooms, and rooms at ¥25,000+ are limited to 79 on the Kintaikyo side. This combination points to three opportunities for operators.

First, rather than simply absorbing early Saturday sell-through, operators should extend it into two-night packages including Friday or Sunday. Some dates are still building — Saturday, November 14 at 71.3% at 27 days out and Saturday, November 28 at 57.7% at 41 days out — and since the walking routes and shuttle bus to associated sites operate only on weekends and holidays, viewers themselves have a reason to stay longer around Saturday. Second, the 79 upper-tier rooms on the Kintaikyo side will remain scarce through the six-month broadcast, leaving room for rate design above the city’s peak of about ¥6,700 set in foliage-season November 2025. Third, station-area business hotels, building on strong weekday occupancy, have a good opportunity to test premium offers combining breakfast or guidance to associated sites available only during the broadcast. As shown in our prefecture investment map, few operating properties sit in the ¥10,000–18,000 band, leaving ample room for existing properties’ upper-tier rooms to move into it.

The limits of the observation should also be stated. Occupancy in this article is estimated from inventory listed on major booking sites and covers only 10 properties / 766 rooms. Rooms sold through direct channels or to groups are not reflected, and figures move as inventory is added or adjusted closer to the stay date. We plan to track the foliage season in November, the year-end and New Year period, and January 2027, when the broadcast passes its midpoint, on the same definitions.

⚠ Note on booking progress for upcoming stay dates: Figures for upcoming stay dates in Table 1 and Figure 2 are estimates based on remaining rooms listed on major booking sites as observed on October 18–19, 2026, and will change by the stay date due to inventory additions, adjustments and cancellations. Estimated ADR uses only verified-history months (through September 2026); listed-price levels from October onward are not covered in this article.

Summary

Three weeks after the premiere of Blossom, lodging in Iwakuni City posted estimated average occupancy of 91.5% for October 1–19 (10 properties / 766 rooms), about 10 points above September’s 81.7%; Saturdays reached 90% two weeks out, and the first night of the three-day weekend sold down to one room the day before. Pre-broadcast September estimated ADR was about ¥6,200 (+6.6% YoY), a baseline ¥2,000–3,000 below Shimonoseki and Yamaguchi City. Supply is split between 4 ryokan with 100 rooms on the Kintaikyo side (79 of them at ¥25,000+) and 8 properties with 929 rooms near Iwakuni Station, with no operating properties around Shin-Iwakuni Station. In Matsue, associated sites grew 2–3x and citywide arrivals just under 10% during the broadcast; in Iwakuni, designing two-night packages and upper-tier rooms that convert the rise in visitors into overnight stays is the revenue opportunity of the broadcast period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How full is lodging in Iwakuni since the premiere?

Estimated average occupancy for stays on October 1–19, 2026 was 91.5% (10 properties / 766 rooms, based on major booking-site listings), about 10 points above September’s 81.7% (9 properties / 616 rooms). Note that the panel differs between September and October, and that the figures are estimated from listed inventory and tend to run higher than actual occupancy.

Q. Is the high October occupancy an effect of the drama?

That cannot be concluded. October is the first month of the Yamaguchi Destination Campaign’s main phase, overlapping with autumn leisure travel, foliage at Kintaikyo and traffic related to the Iwakuni base. What can be said is the observed fact that pre-broadcast September Saturdays landed around 80% the day before, while post-broadcast Saturdays reach that level two weeks out.

Q. How far have bookings progressed for upcoming Saturdays?

As observed on October 18–19, 2026, Saturday, October 24 was 90.6% at 6 days out, Saturday, October 31 89.2% at 13 days out, and Saturday, November 21, the first night of the Labor Thanksgiving Day three-day weekend, 88.0% at 34 days out. Meanwhile, Saturday, November 14 was 71.3% at 27 days out and Saturday, November 28 57.7% at 41 days out, both still building.

Q. What is the level of hotel rates (estimated settled ADR) in Iwakuni?

About ¥6,200 in pre-broadcast September 2026 (N=16 properties), up 6.6% from about ¥5,800 a year earlier. The highest month in the past year was foliage-season November 2025 at about ¥6,700; how far this November exceeds that level will be the first rate-side yardstick.

Q. Where are places to stay in Iwakuni concentrated?

There are 4 operating ryokan with 100 rooms within 2km of Kintaikyo Bridge and 8 properties with 929 rooms, mostly business hotels, within 2km of Iwakuni Station (as of October 20, 2026). Within 2km of Shin-Iwakuni Station, no property had selling prices confirmed in the last three months, and rooms at ¥25,000+ are limited to 79 on the Kintaikyo side.

References & Sources

■ Data sources

Major booking-site listed inventory for lodging properties in Iwakuni City tracked by MetroEngines Research (daily remaining rooms, stays in August–November 2026, 9–10 properties / 616–766 rooms) and estimated settled ADR (Iwakuni, Shimonoseki and Yamaguchi City, January 2024–September 2026, verified-history basis); property master data and listed prices (September 2026, all-plan average) within 2km of Kintaikyo Bridge, Iwakuni Station and Shin-Iwakuni Station. The broadcast schedule, tourism measures and visitor numbers at past asadora locations rely solely on the published documents below.

■ Calculation assumptions

Estimated occupancy is estimated from the sell-through of listed inventory for a fixed set of properties that list at least 30% of their rooms on major booking sites, using only observations from 45 days to 1 day before the stay date (LT45–LT1). Estimated settled ADR is the property median of per-room, tax-excluded-equivalent values obtained by applying segment-specific factors to the lowest-plan price, covering only verified-history months (through September 2026). The 2km radii include properties with 10+ rooms (excluding leisure hotels); “operating” means properties with selling prices confirmed in August–October 2026.

■ Limitations and caveats

The panel is small at 10 properties / 766 rooms, and differs between September (9 properties / 616 rooms) and October (10 properties / 766 rooms), so month-to-month comparison is not strictly like-for-like. Unlisted rooms are counted on the sold side, so figures tend to run higher than actual occupancy, and direct and group sales are not reflected. Figures for upcoming stay dates are as observed on October 18–19, 2026 and will change by the stay date. The rise in occupancy reflects the combined effect of the premiere, Yamaguchi DC, autumn leisure travel and other factors; no attempt is made to separate them.
