Crab Season 2026 Opens Nov 6: 613 Inns, Rates Up to 3.6x in Echizen
Posted: 2026.10.13Crab season 2026 opens on Friday, November 6, when snow crab (zuwaigani) fishing begins simultaneously along the Sea of Japan coast in Fukui, Ishikawa, Kyoto, Hyogo, Tottori and neighboring prefectures. The HotelBank Editorial Team analyzed guest reviews from the past 24 months and found 613 properties across 45 prefectures where crab at dinner is mentioned repeatedly. The six prefectures that land Echizen-gani, Kano-gani and Matsuba-gani account for 311 of them (50.7%), while the remaining half extends to Hokkaido, Kyushu and hot-spring towns in the Kanto region. This article looks in turn at the geography of properties where crab is talked about, how far the settled ADR estimate in the producing areas steps up once the season opens, and how bookings for the opening weekend are pacing at this point.

Free-Flowing Onsen by Prefecture 2026: 1,254 Inns, 426 Under-Marketed
Posted: 2026.10.05How much do guests actually talk about free-flowing hot spring baths (gensen kakenagashi — spring water fed straight into the tub and allowed to overflow rather than being recirculated)? The HotelBank Editorial Team tallied guest reviews across all 47 prefectures for the most recent 24 months and found 1,254 properties where kakenagashi was mentioned favorably in 10 or more reviews, for a total of 28,913 mentions. The largest mention count nationwide belongs to Fukui Hotel (ふく井ホテル) in Obihiro, Hokkaido, with 274 mentions; the highest mention rates (share of all of a property's reviews) are at Miyuki Onsen (深雪温泉) in Isawa, Yamanashi (36.0%) and Yamagatakan (山県館) at Kawaura Onsen (30.8%). For operators, two further points matter. First, the level of estimated settled ADR differs according to what kakenagashi is mentioned together with. Ryokan where it appears in the same review as the open-air bath sit at 1.49x their prefecture's ryokan benchmark, while ryokan where it is paired only with water quality sit at 0.95x. Second, there are 426 properties where kakenagashi is mentioned in 10 or more reviews yet the mention rate stays below 5%. Most are mid-sized to large properties with many rooms: they have free-flowing baths, but those baths...

OTA Price Gaps: 71% Identical Across 9,030 Matched Pairs (2026)
Posted: 2026.08.30The same property, the same night, the same room conditions. Line those listings up across multiple booking platforms and how much do the prices actually differ? The sense that "the price depends on which site you use" runs deep among both industry professionals and travelers, yet almost no public dataset measures, at the room level, how large those gaps are and where they concentrate. The HotelBank Editorial Team therefore ran a direct measurement study: taking properties listed simultaneously on two major Japanese OTAs and comparable booking platforms, we aligned property, stay date and sales conditions, then compared the advertised prices side by side. The headline finding first. Of the 9,030 pairs that could be compared under identical conditions, 71.0% differed by not a single yen. A gap appeared in the remaining 29.0%, with a median of roughly ¥1,000 (6.9% against the cheaper side). In other words, prices are aligned across most of the market, and gaps are concentrated in specific segments. That concentration follows clear patterns by property type, price band, region and day of week. What follows reads those patterns through the lens of channel strategy.

Room Cleanliness: Foreign Reviews Mention It 1.5x More — 12,733 Hotels
Posted: 2026.08.28When guests talk about their room, the single thing they mention most is how clean it was. The HotelBank Editorial Team ran NLP (natural language processing) over 1,537,404 guest reviews covering 12,733 lodging facilities across Japan, and found that cleanliness is the second most frequently mentioned evaluation axis after location — and that it comes up roughly 1.5 times more often in foreign-language reviews than in Japanese ones. At the same time, the facilities where cleanliness is mentioned most are not necessarily the ones that score highest on it. This article reads the review-tag data quantitatively to show how room cleanliness is evaluated, and where the real differences lie.

200K Hotel Reviews: Breakfast Mentions 3.5x by Segment, Staff 2.2x
Posted: 2026.08.27What guests write about most in their reviews is neither the room nor the price — it is people and food. HotelBank Editorial Team ran a tag analysis on 200,345 guest reviews (trailing 24 months) from 109 properties across eight major prefectures. Staff-related mentions ran at 21.2% for the Deluxe band versus 9.7% for Business — a 2.2x gap — while breakfast buffet mentions hit 17.4% at Resort properties against 5.0% at Business, a 3.5x spread. Dig one layer deeper and the split in guest sentiment is not about kindness or attentiveness at all. It concentrates on two touchpoints a property can move through operations alone: the check-in flow and the breakfast venue. This article cross-references tag mention rates, positive shares and breakfast pricing to locate — quantitatively — where the revenue upside is sitting.

New Hotel Reviews Rise +0.38pt in 2 Months: 1,728 Japan 2025 Openings
Posted: 2026.08.23Japan saw 1,728 new lodging properties totalling 41,222 rooms open in 2025, as tracked by MetroEngines Research. A year and a half on, as of August 2026, how many guest voices have these properties collected, and how has their reputation taken shape? This article sets price aside and focuses on how evaluation itself is formed, tracking 143,915 post-opening reviews as a monthly cohort. Our earlier work on renovation timing across the 10-year opening cohort and on ADR and inventory sell-through for properties that opened in H1 2026 dealt with rate and occupancy. This piece applies the same cohort logic to a different axis: how reputation forms.

In-Room Dining Ryokan TOP 30: 58.3% Still Offer It, ADR +91%
Posted: 2026.08.22Serving dinner in the guest room rather than in a banquet hall or restaurant — heyashoku (in-room dining) — is one of the most labour-intensive service formats in Japanese lodging. Every course has to be carried to and cleared from each room individually, and temperature control has to be managed room by room. At a time when hiring in both kitchen and service roles has become difficult simultaneously, where and how much of this format still survives? And does the extra labour actually show up in room rates? For this study we ran semantic analysis on 6,952,636 guest reviews posted over the past 24 months (August 2024 to August 2026) and extracted 51,290 reviews (0.74% of the total) in which dinner served in the guest room was described. We analysed the 469 properties with 20 or more such mentions, and examined the top 30 by mention rate, prefecture-level retention, and the gap in estimated settled ADR between ryokan that operate in-room dining and those that do not.

Massage Chairs in Japanese Hotels: TOP 20 Most-Mentioned Properties
Posted: 2026.08.15Some in-house facilities keep coming up in guest reviews even though they require nothing like the capital outlay of a large public bath or a sauna. The massage chair is one of them. When the HotelBank Editorial Team ran natural-language processing over guest reviews from the past 24 months, 68 properties nationwide had 15 or more positive reviews mentioning a massage chair, and at the top property 18.67% of all reviews touched on this single amenity. This article reads where those mentions occur and through what guest flow, cross-referenced against property category, room count, and estimated settled ADR.

Review Volume Doesn’t Grow With Age: 1,643 Hotels, ADR, Sell-Through
Posted: 2026.08.14Guest reviews at accommodation properties are usually discussed in terms of ratings. In day-to-day operations, however, what may matter more than the score is the review count — the accumulated stock. Review counts do not move overnight; they are a variable that can only grow through the compounding of room count and actual stays. In this article we cross-reference the distribution of review counts across 16,576 properties nationwide with estimated settled ADR and inventory sell-through data for 1,643 properties in six prefectures, and examine how the stock of review volume co-exists with rate and sell-through.

Sake in Hotel Reviews: 1,053 Japan Properties, 0.053% of 3.29M Posts
Posted: 2026.08.13Read enough guest reviews and a distinct group emerges — travellers who write not about the food or the hot spring, but about the sake itself. Yet their voices are far from numerous. Of roughly 3.29 million guest reviews compiled by the HotelBank Editorial Team (24 months, August 2024 to July 2026), only 1,740 posts touched on the selection of sake, local sake or shochu — just 0.053% of the total. At a time when breakfast, crab and regional cuisine have been analysed to exhaustion, sake remains a subject that is barely spoken about. This article traces where those rare 1,740 mentions cluster — by region and by named property — and quantifies the room that still exists in beverage-led positioning.
