Ryokan offer by far the most choice at 42 properties, ranging from near room-only plans to high-end rooms with private open-air baths. Read the ¥41,000 average as a benchmark for two people staying at a ryokan with dinner. Cottage and vacation-rental prices are per building, so with four to six people the cost per person can come in below a ryokan. Nationwide, ryokan average about ¥35,000 per room for two, so Minakami’s ryokan sit a little above that level (for national rates by lodging type, see Japan Accommodation Costs for Two: Business Hotel ¥16k, Ryokan ¥35k).
For reference, the town-wide average listed price was ¥30,400 (40 properties) for November 2025 and ¥42,200 (42 properties) for November 2026. However, the mix of listed properties has changed, so the gap cannot simply be read as a price increase. For budgeting, the lodging-type averages in the table above are more reliable.
Minakami, Tanigawa, Yubiso, Takaragawa, Kamimoku: How the Hot-Spring Villages Differ
A search for “Minakami Onsen” returns lodgings scattered across many hot-spring villages within the town. Based on the Minakami Tourism Association’s “Minakami 18 Onsen” guide, here is the character of the main ones.
- Minakami Onsen: the heart of the onsen area. A hot-spring town lined with souvenir shops, hotels and ryokan, close to the station and with the most lodgings. The easiest choice for first-timers.
- Tanigawa Onsen: a tranquil hot-spring village along the clear Tanigawa stream, looking up at Mt. Tanigawa. Suits adults wanting a quiet stay.
- Yubiso Onsen: a quiet spring rising on the banks of the clear Yubiso River.
- Takaragawa Onsen: on the upper Tone River, known for its huge open-air baths. A mountain spring associated with the legend of Yamato Takeru.
- Kamimoku Onsen: a spring on the banks of the Tone River, designated a National Health Resort Hot Spring. It is described as snowmelt from Mt. Tanigawa, warmed underground before welling up.
- Sarugakyo Onsen and Hoshi Onsen: in the south of the town, toward Mikuni Pass. Sarugakyo, overlooking Lake Akaya, and Hoshi, beloved by writers, are both designated National Health Resort Hot Springs.
A simple way to narrow it down: choose the Minakami onsen town if you value strolling and a choice of places to eat, and Tanigawa, Yubiso or Takaragawa if you value quiet and gorge scenery. If you are looking for detached-villa style lodgings in Tanigawa, Yubiso or Takaragawa, five detached-villa inns at the foot of Mt. Tanigawa (yadolist, in Japanese) describes each property in detail.

Taking the Saturday-to-weekday ratio property by property gives a median of about 1.23x, and Saturday was more expensive at 30 of the 36 properties. November has two public holidays, November 3 (Culture Day) and November 23 (Labor Thanksgiving Day), and the nights before them tend to be as busy as weekends. If your dates are flexible, simply choosing a Monday–Thursday stay saves about ¥10,000 for two, comparing medians. On the 2026 calendar, the only three-day weekend in November is the 21st–23rd; how that weekend overlaps with the autumn-leaves peak is analyzed in Nov 2026’s Only Long Weekend Is Nov 21-23: Prices Peak in 4 of 7 Areas.
Four Things to Check Before Booking in November
- Station pick-up: many lodgings offer pick-up from Minakami Station or Jomo-Kogen Station, but whether you need to reserve, the deadline and the last pick-up time vary by property. If you are traveling by train, align your arrival time with the pick-up schedule when you book.
- Dinner start time: dinner-included plans often have a fixed start time. If you plan to enjoy the autumn leaves or a day-use bath first, leave enough time between check-in and dinner.
- Autumn leaves and early-winter roads: according to the Minakami Tourism Association’s typical guide, the leaves peak around October 25 at Takaragawa Onsen and around October 30 at Suwakyo Gorge. November is the transition from late foliage to early winter, so check the association’s foliage-progress updates just before you go. In addition, National Route 291 between the Tanigawadake Mountain Museum and Ichinokurasawa closes for winter from 10:00 on November 4, and Prefectural Route 63 (Minakami–Katashina Line) between Yunokoya Bridge and Tsunagi Bridge from 14:00 on November 5 (subject to change depending on snowfall). If you are driving deeper into the area, check in advance.
- Tanigawadake Ropeway closure: Tanigawadake Joch (the ropeway) ends its green-season operation on November 15, and all facilities, including the parking lot, are closed from November 16 to December 4 (winter operation starts December 5). If the ropeway is part of your plans, schedule it for early November or after December 5.

References and Sources
■ Data source
The lodging-type averages and day-of-week medians were compiled by the HotelBank Editorial Team from OTA listed prices (retrieved October 31, 2026, for November 2026 stays, per room for two, tax included). The lodging-type figures cover 71 properties in Minakami Town; the day-of-week figures cover 36 properties in the same town.
■ Method
Lodging-type figures are the mean listed price for each type. For day of week, each property’s cheapest-plan listed price was split into weekday nights (Monday–Thursday, excluding holidays and the nights before them: November 2, 3, 22 and 23) and Saturday nights, and the median across the 36 properties was taken.
■ Limitations
Listed prices are the amounts shown on booking sites and do not match amounts actually paid. The averages mix plans from room-only to two meals and rooms with private open-air baths. For lodging types with only 3–8 properties, a single property’s price can move the average. Because the set of listed properties differs, the comparison with the same month of the previous year is not treated as a price increase.
