For families starting their hotel search in late April for Japan’s 2026 Golden Week (GW), reality hits hard: most rooms accommodating four or more guests are already nearly sold out. In this article, MetroEngines Research analyzes around 9,500 domestic hotels whose public OTA prices and inventory have been continuously tracked, identifying when each property approached sellout and revealing the most popular areas, price ranges, and accommodation types. We also outline booking timing benchmarks for those targeting the same hotels for GW 2027, plus tips on properties still bookable today.
Metric Definitions Used in This Article
- ADR (Average Daily Rate): Average of public selling prices on OTAs. Differs from actual transacted prices. Per-room rate (tax included) for 2 guests in 1 room, averaged across all plans (room-only through full-board).
- Sellout Rate: Share of plans no longer accepting reservations on OTAs at the survey time. Differs from property-wide occupancy.

GW 2026: Family Rooms Vanished at an Unprecedented Pace
To start with the conclusion: among 4-plus guest plans tracked by MetroEngines Research, 8,072 hotels (84.6% of the total) showed a sellout signal on at least one day during GW 2026 (April 29 to May 6, 2026). Breaking this down by when the sellout signal first appeared, 6,106 hotels (=64.0%) had already shown sellout signals during March, two months before GW. In other words, the majority of family-friendly GW accommodations were locked up before April even began.

According to JTB Group’s “2026 Golden Week Travel Trends,” this year’s GW is projected to attract a record 24.47 million travelers (101.9% YoY). Domestic travel in particular is up 1.3x YoY according to Hankyu Travel International’s booking data. The calendar layout is also favorable: May 2 (Sat) through May 6 (Wed, holiday) forms a five-day stretch, expandable to nine days by adding paid leave on May 7 and 8, making it ideal for family travel planning. While demand has surged, the supply of “Japanese-style rooms, triples, and connecting rooms accommodating four or more guests” remains extremely limited, intensifying the first-come-first-served dynamic.
Early Sellout Area Ranking: Western Japan Resorts and Hot Springs Dominate
The chart below ranks prefectures by their early sellout rate (share of hotels showing sellout signals by end of March). Filtering to prefectures with at least 100 properties in the sample, the top of the list is dominated by hot spring and resort destinations in western Japan: Oita, Ehime, Shimane, Kagoshima, Nagasaki, Okinawa, and Fukuoka.
Source: MetroEngines Research, prepared by HotelBank Editorial Team (prefectures with 100+ properties only, GW 2026, 4-plus guest plans)
Oita Prefecture (early sellout rate 79.8%), ranked first, hosts Yufuin and Beppu—two of Japan’s most popular family hot spring destinations. Out of 282 properties accepting groups of four or more during GW, 225 had shown sellout signals by end of March, a density that overshadows other prefectures. Kagoshima, Nagasaki, and Okinawa (ranked third and below) share a common pattern: areas combining the three pillars of family demand—resort stays, hot springs, and ocean access.
The picture changes when looking at volume. Prefectures with abundant supply—Nagano (705 properties), Shizuoka (635), Hokkaido (507), and Kyoto (425)—still offer choices in absolute numbers since many family-capable properties exist. Even so, Nagano (57.6%) and Shizuoka (59.1%) both exceed 50% early sellout rates, leaving little room for complacency.

By Price Range: “Under ¥20K Budget” and “Over ¥80K Premium” Sell Fastest at Both Extremes
The table below shows early sellout rates by price band, based on per-room rates (tax included) for 4 guests in 1 room.
| Price Band (4 guests, 1 room) | Hotels in Sample | Sellout Signal Rate | Early Sellout Rate (by end of March) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under ¥20,000 | 495 | 96.0% | 80.6% |
| ¥20,000–¥35,000 | 2,267 | 79.5% | 62.7% |
| ¥35,000–¥50,000 | 1,798 | 83.0% | 62.5% |
| ¥50,000–¥80,000 | 2,390 | 84.5% | 61.5% |
| ¥80,000+ | 2,536 | 90.0% | 66.6% |
Source: MetroEngines Research, prepared by HotelBank Editorial Team (N=9,486 properties, GW 2026, 4 guests/1 room basis)
What stands out is that the band with the highest early sellout rate is “Under ¥20,000” at 80.6%. Plans accommodating a family of four for under ¥20,000 are scarce in number (495 properties), making them fiercely competitive due to price advantage. The next highest is the premium “¥80,000+” band at 66.6%, where limited room counts combine with affluent customers, anniversary demand, and inbound tourism in a structurally tight market.
In short, the family hotel market gets cleared out from both ends first: “affordable rooms for four” and “memorable luxury stays.” Mid-range bands (¥35,000–¥50,000 and ¥50,000–¥80,000) stayed in the low 60s for early sellout rate, suggesting relatively more options remained available even into April.
By Property Type: Pensions and Vacation Rentals Absorb Family Demand First
Looking at early sellout rates by property type, pensions and vacation rentals (kashibessou) sell out fastest, both exceeding 70%. The reasons: whole-property rentals suited for families and groups, facilities supporting self-catering and BBQ, pet-friendly options—all distinctly valuable to family travelers.
Source: MetroEngines Research, prepared by HotelBank Editorial Team (property types with N≥30 only, GW 2026, 4-plus guest plans)
Notably, ryokan (Japanese inns) show a 61.9% early sellout rate—slightly lower than pure hotel formats (63.7%). Since ryokan include large-scale hot spring inns with many rooms per property, the pattern is less “entire area completely vanishes” and more “popular ryokan sell out fast but second-tier options remain.” Pensions and vacation rentals, by contrast, are mostly small operators with only a few rooms each—the moment the first family group claims them, they’re gone.
GW 2026 Lodging Prices Trending +10–20% Year-over-Year
“Even if I find a family-friendly property, will the price be affordable?” The data answers this question. According to MetroEngines Research aggregates, lodging rates for GW 2026 (May) rose YoY across all major prefectures.
Source: MetroEngines Research, prepared by HotelBank Editorial Team (May 2026, 2 guests/1 room basis, tax included)
Note on Data Source Switching: This article uses both OTA-public-price data (selling-price basis) and REIT monthly operational data (transacted-price basis). Since the two have structural level differences, please focus on YoY change rates rather than direct absolute-value comparisons.
Kyoto saw the largest gain at +20.4% YoY (¥37,900 → ¥45,700), followed by Tokyo +14.2%, Hokkaido +13.1%, Osaka +12.5%, Okinawa +10.9%, and Fukuoka +6.4%. These are 2-guest/1-room rates; 4-guest/1-room family plans tend to skew even higher. Reflecting the strong demand, Hoshino Resorts REIT (星野リゾート・リート, 3287) reported in its February 2026 monthly operations that portfolio-wide ADR rose +8.6% YoY and RevPAR +10.5% YoY—evidence that resort-focused REITs continue to ride the price-rise wave (Source: Hoshino Resorts REIT Monthly Operations).
In other words, a delayed booking carries a double penalty: fewer choices and higher rates. Families that moved early likely secured better properties at lower prices.

Why Did Family Rooms Sell Out So Early? Three Structural Factors
Three structural factors specific to family travel explain the unusually rapid sellout pace.
First, room type scarcity. Most urban hotels build their inventory around doubles and twins; rooms that fit four-plus guests in one room—Japanese-style rooms, connecting rooms, suites—account for only 10–20% of total inventory. With supply this constrained, peak-demand periods like GW deplete this stock first.
Second, accelerating planning lead times. JTB’s survey shows GW departure peaks on April 25 (Sat), April 26 (Sun), and May 3 (Sun). This reflects a shift from “deciding right before GW” (a few years ago) to “locking in 2–3 months ahead.” Social media and travel media amplifying “popular GW areas” early in the year has pulled forward family booking timing.
Third, inbound competition. Inbound visitor numbers remained high in 2026, with family travelers from Western markets (Europe, Americas, Australia) and East Asia continuing to favor Japanese resort hotels and hot spring inns. The Japan Tourism Agency’s “Accommodation Travel Statistics Survey” (2025 results) confirms growth in foreign-guest nights in regional areas, putting them in direct competition with domestic families for the same “spacious rooms.”

Early Sellout Regulars: Pension and Vacation Rental Examples
In the pension and vacation rental category—where early sellout rates exceed 70%—each property has only a handful of rooms, so they fill up the moment booking opens. Here are signature examples from the Nagano and Shizuoka regions.
| Property | Area | Capacity | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Karuizawa House Villa (軽井沢ハウスヴィラ) (6 types total) | Karuizawa Town, Nagano | Up to 10–11 guests/villa | 6 villa types including pet-friendly, jacuzzi, and sauna villas. Fire-pit and BBQ equipment rental available. WiFi and streaming video included. |

The ¥80K+ Premium Band: Luxury Family Resorts Selling Out Early
The 66.6% early sellout rate in the premium band reflects affluent customers, anniversary demand, and inbound tourism, plus a recent rise in resorts offering experience-based programs for families. Below are signature properties and their family-oriented features.

|---|---|---|---|

Conquering the Budget Band: Chains Under ¥20K for 4 Guests + Tactics
For the most fiercely competitive band (under ¥20,000) with an 80.6% early sellout rate, here are family-capable chains and tips for using them.
| Chain | Family Highlights |
|---|---|
| Comfort Hotel (Choice Hotels) | Free co-sleeping for children up to 6th grade. Free breakfast. Top-tier value chain for family travel. |
| Route Inn Hotels (280+ properties) | “Force room” (4-guest room) configuration available. Free 30-item buffet breakfast. |
| Ooedo-Onsen-Monogatari Group (66 properties nationwide) | Two-meal buffet plans at ¥9,000–¥15,000 per person. Even during GW, weekday stays on April 30 (Thu) and May 1 (Fri) offer plans under ¥10,000/person. |
Even within GW, shifting to a date range that includes weekdays April 30 (Thu) and May 1 (Fri) often allows families to dodge peak pricing while still securing accommodations. Ooedo-Onsen-Monogatari Group, in particular, sets weekday-only discount plans at certain properties.
Booking Timing for GW 2027: When to Lock in the Same Property
From this article’s data, a “booking timing benchmark” emerges for family-friendly GW accommodations. The table below back-calculates from early sellout rates, providing a rough guide on how quickly you should act.
| Booking Timing | Trend in Remaining Hotels | Recommended Action |
|---|---|---|
| Previous December – February | Top-tier resort hot spring areas (Oita, Okinawa, Ehime) lock in their popular properties | Book in this window to secure your first-choice property |
| March | Budget family properties under ¥20K and pensions/vacation rentals vanish rapidly | Price-conscious travelers should decide by mid-March |
| Early April | Mid-range (¥35K–¥50K) still has options; Nagano, Shizuoka, Hokkaido relatively available | Sufficient time if flexible on area |
| Late April | Popular properties largely sold out. Remaining: newly opened hotels, urban large suites, cancellation slots | Wait for last-minute cancellations + major compromises on area and property type |
For families set on “definitely securing a trip” for GW 2027, preparation starting within the year (December 2026) is essential. Many OTAs offer plans with free cancellation up to a certain period after booking, so a practical approach is to lock in 3–5 candidate properties early, then narrow down once your family’s schedule firms up.
Still Bookable: Areas and Property Types with Remaining Options
Even in late April, not every property has vanished. The “remaining 15.4%” identified in this analysis (1,474 hotels without sellout signals) likely represents family-capable inventory still on sale. These properties share certain characteristics:
| Characteristics of Remaining Properties | Examples |
|---|---|
| Large-scale resort hotels (200+ rooms) | Central Okinawa main island, Karuizawa, Naeba, etc. |
| “Spacious family suites” at urban hotels | Large hotels in Tokyo Bay, Osaka Bay areas |
| Hotels newly opened in 2025–2026 (awareness lag) | Newly opened properties in Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka |
| Less accessible regional hot spring areas (lower early sellout rates) | Suburban hot springs in Niigata and Chiba (early sellout rates in the 50%s) |
Source: MetroEngines Research, prepared by HotelBank Editorial Team
Niigata’s early sellout rate is 54.3% and Chiba’s 52.5%—relatively low—making it comparatively easy to secure family rooms even in late April. Nagano’s overall sellout rate sits at 80.4%, but its sheer volume means absolute options remain. For last-minute bookers, the mindset shift to “give up top-tier areas, enjoy second-tier alternatives” becomes essential.
Conclusion: The “Two-Months-Ahead Rule” for GW Family Travel
For GW 2026, a striking 64.0% of family-friendly hotels had already shown sellout signals during March (two months before GW), per MetroEngines Research data. With prices trending +10–20% YoY, demand running 1.3x YoY (Hankyu Travel International), and resort REIT ADR up +8.6% (Hoshino Resorts REIT, February 2026)—both pricing and demand show continued upward momentum.
Family travel involves more coordination factors than couple travel (children’s school schedules, grandparents’ availability), making early commitment harder. Yet this analysis effectively forces a choice: “Move two months ahead, or give up on famous areas.” To reliably enjoy GW 2027 with family, building a candidate list at the year-end stage and placing tentative bookings on free-cancellation plans will become the new common sense.
Note on Future-Date ADR: ADR figures in this article represent the average of public selling prices on OTAs at the survey time and fluctuate as check-in date approaches. Currently elevated rates may decline through last-minute discounts, so please interpret with this caveat in mind.
