According to estimates released by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the number of foreign visitors to Japan in March 2026 reached 3,618,900, representing a 3.5% increase compared with the same month of the previous year. This marked the highest March figure on record and maintained a strong monthly level. Compared with February 2026, which recorded 3,466,700 visitors, the total increased by 152,200.

The cumulative total for the first quarter of 2026, covering January through March, reached 10,683,100 visitors, up 1.4% year-on-year. This was the first time the January–March period exceeded 10 million visitors. Demand related to Japan’s cherry blossom season, along with travel demand tied to the Easter holiday period in April, helped support inbound travel across a wide range of markets.

In the East Asian market, South Korea recorded 795,600 visitors, up 4.3% year-on-year, reaching a record high for March. Strong travel demand and increased flight capacity supported the result. Taiwan recorded 653,300 visitors (+7.9%), while Hong Kong recorded 216,300 (+5.2%), with both markets showing steady growth. In contrast, China recorded 291,600 visitors, down 46.2% year-on-year. The decline was attributed to the timing shift of the Lunar New Year holiday and differences in available flight capacity.

In Southeast Asia, Thailand recorded 148,200 visitors (+12.5%), Singapore 62,000 (+15.0%), Indonesia 61,800 (+10.8%), and the Philippines 79,400 (+6.6%). Meanwhile, Malaysia recorded 67,500 visitors (+8.2%), and Vietnam 69,900 (+14.0%). Many markets posted growth, supported by increased flight capacity, school holiday demand, and travel related to Japan’s cherry blossom season.

In the Europe, North America, and Oceania markets, the United States recorded 375,900 visitors (+18.2%), Canada 69,400 (+14.7%), the United Kingdom 48,600 (+16.3%), France 42,100 (+17.8%), and Germany 31,700 (+15.6%). Australia recorded 104,200 visitors (+6.4%), while many European markets also continued to grow. Russia recorded 8,600 visitors (+22.4%), and Nordic countries 18,100 (+11.9%), indicating increases across a broad range of markets.

Overall, inbound demand in March 2026 exceeded the previous year, supported by cherry blossom season travel and spring holiday demand across many markets. On the other hand, declines were observed in the Chinese market, indicating differences in performance among source markets. JNTO stated that it will continue to promote inbound tourism strategically based on market trends, in line with the goals of “sustainable tourism,” “expansion of consumption,” and “promotion of regional destinations.”
