As of October 2026, Kyoto Central Inn (京都セントラルイン) is open and taking reservations. The 138-room hotel stands at the Shijo-Kawaramachi intersection. Online travel agencies (OTAs) list availability from October 2026 through January 2027, and guest reviews were posted as recently as September 2026 (checked October 9, 2026). This article is for readers who remember the hotel “going bankrupt in 2020”: it covers what happened then, where things stand now, listed rates by date, and how to choose among nearby hotels in the same price range.
- — Open and bookable. As of October 9, 2026, rooms are on sale through January 2027 and the official website is active.
- — The company that ceased operations in April 2020 was the operator at the time. The current official website names a different legal entity as the operating company (the reopening date could not be confirmed).
- — Listed room-only rates for two guests per room range from ¥39,000 on an autumn-foliage Saturday to ¥12,000 on a January weekday, a more than threefold spread depending on the date (Kyoto accommodation tax not included).
- — The main strength is location: directly above Exit 6 of Hankyu Kyoto-kawaramachi Station. Rooms are compact, mostly 11–16 sqm, and there is no parking.
Bottom Line: Open and Bookable (as of October 2026)
Three facts were confirmed. (1) The hotel is listed on OTAs as Kyoto Central Inn, with room-only plans on sale for every date checked: October 20, November 14, November 25 and December 10, 2026, and January 20, 2027 (checked October 9, 2026). (2) The same listing page carries guest reviews posted on September 7 and September 10, 2026. (3) The official website (kyotocentralinn.com) is active and shows the room mix, check-in times and a member discount.
On the operating structure, the footer of the official website names “Oneness Kyoto Co., Ltd.” (株式会社ワンネス京都) as the operating company (checked October 9, 2026). That is a different legal entity from Kyoto Central Inn Co., Ltd. ((株)京都セントラルイン), which ceased operations in April 2020, so the most reasonable reading is that the hotel name and building are unchanged, but the operator has changed. The exact reopening date could not be found on the official website, on OTA listings or in public records, and this article was unable to confirm it. For another case where the operator went bankrupt but the hotel kept its name and building under a new operator, see Nobeoka Royal Hotel: six years after the KOSCOINN bankruptcy and a new operator.
Timeline: From the 2020 Shutdown to Today
In chronological order: the building has stood on the same site since 1973, and the hotel has continued to the present, with the operator’s shutdown in spring 2020 in between.

Note: The hotel’s operating status between the 2020 shutdown and November 2021 (closure period, reopening date) could not be confirmed.
Listed Rates by Date (2 Guests per Room, Tax Included)
Alongside availability, the next question is what a stay costs. We checked the lowest room-only rate for two guests per room on OTA listing pages for each date (as of October 9, 2026; prices include consumption tax, and the Kyoto City accommodation tax is paid separately at the front desk).
| Stay date | Day / season | Lowest room-only (2 guests) | Japanese-Western suite |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 20, 2026 | Tuesday, two days before the Jidai Matsuri festival | ¥27,000 | ¥62,400 |
| November 14, 2026 | Saturday, autumn foliage season | ¥39,000 | ¥68,000 |
| November 25, 2026 | Wednesday, autumn foliage season | ¥35,000 | ¥68,000 |
| December 10, 2026 | Thursday, after the foliage season | ¥16,000 | ¥38,400 |
| January 20, 2027 | Wednesday, winter low season | ¥12,000 | ¥32,400 |
Source: OTA listed prices (checked October 9, 2026; research by HotelBank Editorial Team). Two guests per room, room only, consumption tax included. Kyoto City accommodation tax not included. Prices change daily.
An autumn-foliage Saturday runs in the high ¥30,000s, a November weekday in the low ¥30,000s, early December after the foliage season in the mid-¥10,000s, and a January weekday in the low ¥10,000s: the same room varies more than threefold by date. If your dates are flexible, weekdays from December onward are the best value. Kyoto’s 2026 autumn foliage is forecast to peak around the usual time; for how peak timing relates to hotel rates, see Japan Autumn Leaves 2026: peak dates by region for Kyoto, Nikko, Hakone and more, and hotel rates.
The Kyoto City accommodation tax was revised on March 1, 2026. Per person per night, it is now ¥200 for a room charge under ¥6,000, ¥400 for ¥6,000 to under ¥20,000, and ¥1,000 for ¥20,000 to under ¥50,000. A ¥27,000 room for two guests from the table above works out to ¥13,500 per person, so ¥800 is added on site for the two guests. For tax amounts by bracket, exemptions and how other cities compare, see Japan Lodging Tax 2026: rates by city, Kyoto up to ¥10,000, and exemptions.
Where It Sits in the Shimogyo Ward Market
Whether these rates are high or low becomes clear when they are set against listed prices by property type in the same ward, Shimogyo Ward. Aggregating October 2026 OTA listed prices (two guests per room, tax included) by property type, the 126 business hotels averaged about ¥31,400, the 23 city hotels about ¥53,900, and the 141 machiya townhouses about ¥54,600.
| Property type in Shimogyo Ward | Properties | Average listed price (2 guests, tax incl.) |
|---|---|---|
| Business hotels | 126 | ¥31,359 |
| Guesthouses | 34 | ¥32,437 |
| Hostels | 58 | ¥34,149 |
| Ryokan | 24 | ¥35,534 |
| City hotels | 23 | ¥53,856 |
| Machiya townhouses | 141 | ¥54,578 |

Kyoto Central Inn’s October–November listed rates (¥27,000–¥39,000) sit in roughly the same band as the Shimogyo Ward business-hotel average (about ¥31,400). In other words, it offers a location directly above a Shijo-Kawaramachi station at the ward’s standard business-hotel price. From December onward, rates in the ¥10,000s fall well below that average.
The Strength Is Location; Rooms Are Compact and Functional
The address is 30 Otabi-cho, Shijo-dori Teramachi Higashi-iru 2-chome, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto. According to the official website, the hotel sits directly above Exit 6 of Kyoto-kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Main Line, 0 minutes on foot from the Shijo-Kawaramachi city bus stop, and about 3 minutes on foot from Exit 4 of Gion-Shijo Station on the Keihan Main Line. It connects by underground passage to the department store across Shijo-dori, and Nishiki Market is about 2 minutes away on foot, with Minamiza Theatre, Pontocho and Gion about 5 minutes away. The ground floor houses a cafe, a convenience store and a drugstore.
Guest reviews also single out the location. Of 445 guest reviews compiled by the HotelBank Editorial Team (October 2024 to October 2026), 89 of the 91 that mentioned proximity to the station were positive, and 55 of the 59 that mentioned being in the heart of the entertainment district were positive, with comments such as “directly connected to the station, convenient for getting anywhere,” “right in the middle of the downtown area, the convenience is the best,” and “outstanding convenience in central Kyoto.” On price, 40 of the 41 reviews that mentioned the balance between location and cost were positive, for example “great location and good value for money” (same compilation). By rating category, “location” scored 4.16 out of 5 (N=265), the highest of any category.
According to the official website, the 138 rooms comprise 27 singles, 21 doubles, 88 twins and 2 Japanese-Western suites. HotelBank property data puts singles at 11–13 sqm and twins and doubles at 13–16 sqm: a compact, functional layout typical of a building that opened in 1973. Twins account for just over 60% of rooms, so there is plenty of choice for two guests. Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out by 11:00. Every room has a humidifying air purifier and an electric kettle, and there is an amenity corner and a free self-service laundry in front of the second-floor front desk. There is no parking, so the hotel suits itineraries by train and bus. Registering as a member on the official website (free) gives a 5% discount on plans on sale.
In short, this hotel suits travelers whose goal is to stay in Shijo-Kawaramachi itself and who see the room as simply a place to sleep. The location is worth the most if you spend late evenings in Kiyamachi and Pontocho, start the morning on foot from Nishiki Market, or drop off bags and use the underground link to the department store.
How to Choose a Similarly Priced Hotel Around Shijo-Kawaramachi
If you are looking along Shijo-dori with a budget of around ¥30,000, the shortlist depends on what you prioritize: distance from the station, a large communal bath, breakfast, or room size. The table below compares four hotels with different strengths, using OTA listed prices from October 15 to December 15, 2026 (two guests per room, tax included; period average of daily averages, and the lowest daily average).
| Hotel | Nearest station / walk | Rooms | Listed price: period average / lowest daily average | Strengths |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kyoto Central Inn (京都セントラルイン) | Directly above Exit 6, Hankyu Kyoto-kawaramachi Station | 138 | ¥27,000–¥39,000 (dates checked in Oct–Nov) | Above the station, 2 min walk to Nishiki Market, convenience store and cafe on the ground floor |
| Toyoko Inn Kyoto Shijo Karasuma (東横INN京都四条烏丸) | About 1 min walk from Hankyu Karasuma / Subway Shijo Station | 223 | ¥16,734 / ¥11,406 | Most affordable of the four, free breakfast, 190 singles make it strong for solo travelers |
| APA Hotel Kyoto Gion EXCELLENT (アパホテル〈京都祇園〉EXCELLENT) | About 5 min walk from Keihan Gion-Shijo Station | 161 | ¥34,401 / ¥17,023 | On the Gion end of Shijo-dori, 112 twins (mostly 18 sqm) suit two guests, Yasaka Shrine and Hanamikoji within walking distance |
| Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shijo (三井ガーデンホテル京都四条) | About 6 min walk from Hankyu Karasuma / Subway Shijo Station | 347 | ¥38,374 / ¥20,595 | Large communal bath, rooms average about 20 sqm, large property with banquet and meeting rooms |
| Sotetsu Fresa Inn Kyoto-Shijokarasuma (相鉄フレッサイン 京都四条烏丸) | About 3 min walk from Hankyu Karasuma / Subway Shijo Station | 140 | ¥38,415 / ¥17,294 | Opened 2017, rooms average about 17.5 sqm, lounge |

Listed prices are OTA listed prices for October 15 to December 15, 2026 (two guests per room, tax included, N=58–62 days each): the period average of each day’s all-plan average, and the value on the day with the lowest daily average (not the price of the cheapest plan). For Kyoto Central Inn, the date-specific rates checked in the text (as of October 9, 2026) are shown. Walking times are from official websites or estimated from map distance (80 m/min). Room counts and sizes are from HotelBank property data.
To sum up the choice: if you will be out in the evenings around Kawaramachi and Gion, pick Kyoto Central Inn or APA Hotel Kyoto Gion EXCELLENT; to keep costs down as a solo traveler, Toyoko Inn Kyoto Shijo Karasuma; to unwind in a large communal bath, Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shijo; and if newer rooms matter most, Sotetsu Fresa Inn Kyoto-Shijokarasuma. Shijo-dori is only about a 10-minute walk from Kawaramachi to Karasuma, so Nishiki Market and Pontocho are within walking distance wherever you stay. If you want to raise the budget a little and look at hotels around Kawaramachi with a rooftop bar or a communal bath, this HotelPicks article comparing Kyoto Granbell Hotel Main Building and others (in Japanese) is a useful reference.

In Kyoto, it compares Kyoto Granbell Hotel Main Building (105 rooms), which has a rooftop bar and is within walking distance of Kawaramachi and Gion, with MIMARU Kyoto Shinmachi Sanjo, where every room has a kitchen and washing machine and three guests can share comfortably, by distance from the station, room count and indicative price. It shows the options if you raise the budget a little between Shijo-Kawaramachi and Shijo-Karasuma.
On the shinkansen-gate side at Kyoto Station’s Hachijo Exit, it compares six hotels, including Hotel Keihan Kyoto Grande (320 rooms), connected by underground passage about 1 minute away, Daiwa Roynet Hotel Kyoto Terrace Hachijo PREMIER, where every room is at least 20 sqm, and Hotel Keihan Kyoto Hachijoguchi with a communal bath, by walking time, room count, indicative price and whether there is a communal bath. It suits business trips and transit stays where a direct station connection matters more than being downtown.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Has Kyoto Central Inn closed?
No. As of October 9, 2026, OTAs list rooms for October 2026 through January 2027, and the official website is active. Guest reviews were also posted in September 2026.
Q. I heard it went bankrupt in 2020. Who operates it now?
The company that ceased operations on April 29, 2020 was the operator at the time, Kyoto Central Inn Co., Ltd. The current official website names Oneness Kyoto Co., Ltd. as the operating company, which indicates the hotel name and building are unchanged but the operator has changed. The exact reopening date could not be confirmed.
Q. How much does it cost for two people?
Listed room-only rates for two guests per room (consumption tax included, checked October 9, 2026) were ¥27,000 on October 20, ¥39,000 on November 14 (Saturday), ¥16,000 on December 10 and ¥12,000 on January 20, 2027. The Kyoto City accommodation tax is paid separately at the front desk. Prices change daily, so check the same dates before booking.
Q. What is the nearest station? Is there parking?
The hotel is directly above Exit 6 of Kyoto-kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Main Line, and about a 3-minute walk from Exit 4 of Gion-Shijo Station on the Keihan Main Line. The Shijo-Kawaramachi city bus stop is right outside. There is no parking, so drivers will need a nearby coin parking lot.
Q. How much Kyoto City accommodation tax is added?
Since the revision on March 1, 2026, the tax per person per night is ¥200 for a room charge under ¥6,000, ¥400 for ¥6,000 to under ¥20,000, and ¥1,000 for ¥20,000 to under ¥50,000. A ¥27,000 room for two works out to ¥13,500 per person, so the tax is ¥400 per person, or ¥800 for two.
Methodology and Sources
■ Data sources
Operating status, the operator named on the website, room mix and access were checked on the official website and OTA listing pages on October 9, 2026. Rates by date are the prices displayed on OTA listing pages that day. Prices by property type in Shimogyo Ward are aggregated from October 2026 OTA listed prices, and prices for the four nearby hotels are aggregated from OTA listed prices for October 15 to December 15, 2026 (both researched by the HotelBank Editorial Team). Reviews are 445 guest reviews from October 2024 to October 2026, classified by the editorial team. The 2020 shutdown is based on HotelBank’s bankruptcy roundup article.
■ Calculation assumptions
All prices are for two guests per room, per room, consumption tax included, and exclude the Kyoto City accommodation tax. The accommodation tax example divides the room rate by two to get the per-person room charge and applies the brackets in effect since the March 1, 2026 revision. For the four nearby hotels, “period average” is the average over the period of each day’s average across listed plans, and “lowest daily average” is the value on the day when that daily average was lowest; neither is the lowest price of an individual plan.
■ Limitations
Listed prices are the amounts displayed at the time of checking. They vary with remaining inventory, room type and booking channel, and may not match the amount actually paid. The reopening date, and the hotel’s operating status between the 2020 shutdown and November 2021, could not be confirmed from public information. Review counts are aggregations of classified mentions, and individual impressions vary.
