Area & Property Analysis

Searches for “Kirishima Kanko Hotel closed” (霧島観光ホテル 廃業) have generated 222 search impressions over the past 90 days. The short answer: the hotel is still open as of September 2026. The news section of its official website was updated on September 11, 2026, and a premium dog park opened on September 1 at its dog-friendly annex, “D+KIRISHIMA.” Inventory also continues to be sold as usual on the major booking sites.

So why is the hotel searched together with the word “closed”? The background is a series of real closures, temporary shutdowns and ownership/operator changes within the same market, the Kirishima Onsen area. This article first confirms from primary sources that the hotel is operating, then lays out a timeline of the property changes in Kirishima Onsen that are easily confused with it. We then present measured OTA listed prices and supply trends, and close with implications for area operators on how “closure” rumors attach themselves to hotels that are still in business.

Metric Definitions Used in This Article

  • ADR (Average Daily Rate) = an estimated settled room rate (tax-excluded equivalent), calculated by applying a property-type adjustment factor to the lowest-plan price level each property publishes on major booking sites (per room, 2 guests per room, tax included). Checked against property-level results disclosed by listed hotel REITs (91 properties, most recent 3 months), the median error is about 7%. It is an estimate and differs from each property’s actual settled prices and accounting figures. Area-level ADR is the median of the covered properties (the level of a typical property in the area).
  • Listed price = the selling price published on major booking sites, per room for 2 guests (tax included). “All-plan average” is the average of all plans from room-only to meal-inclusive; “lowest plan” is the lowest price level on each date. This is a different metric from estimated settled ADR.

Kirishima Kanko Hotel Is Open as of September 2026 — Confirmed by Both Official Sources and Listed Inventory

We start with the facts. Kirishima Kanko Hotel (霧島観光ホテル) in Kirishima City, Kagoshima currently operates under the name “Auberge AUBEGIO Kirishima Kanko Hotel.” It has 77 guest rooms (the total stated on the Japanese version of its official website; the English version states 75). The evidence of operation we were able to confirm is as follows.

In particular, the opening of the dog park on September 1, 2026 and the installation of in-room saunas in April of the same year are moves that rarely happen at a property on its way out. Reviews also keep coming in: 144 reviews in the last 3 months confirms that guests are actually still staying. We found no evidence of a closure or shutdown in either official announcements or news reports.

Why People Search for “Closed” — Five Real Changes in Kirishima Onsen

Kirishima Onsen is a hot spring area in the mountains of Kirishima City where large hotels are packed closely together. Over the past decade, it has seen several real closures, long-term shutdowns and operator changes. Because the names are similar and almost all follow the pattern “Kirishima ___ Hotel,” the area is structurally prone to confusion in search. Below is a timeline based on the primary sources and news reports we could confirm.

Table 2: Major Closures, Shutdowns and Operator Changes in Kirishima Onsen (2017–2026)

The timeline shows that the biggest trigger linking the word “closed” to Kirishima Onsen was the January 2021 reports that Kirishima Kokusai Hotel would close. At the time, the drop in guests due to COVID-19 and aging facilities were cited as the reasons, and national newspapers and wire services all covered the story. HotelBank also reported on it at the time.

What matters, however, is what happened next. In May of that year, a hotel management company agreed to take over operations, and the closure plan was withdrawn, with operations resuming from June 1. The management company later changed its name to Iconia Hospitality on July 1, 2025. Kirishima Kokusai Hotel’s official website announced the opening of a new facility, the “Kirisa” sand bath (砂むし温泉 霧砂), on June 1, 2026, and the hotel remains open today. In other words, the January 2021 information that “Kirishima Kokusai Hotel is closing” was superseded by the facts five months later.

The other trigger is Active Resorts Kirishima (formerly Kirishima Royal Hotel), which closed on January 31, 2024. It really did close, citing aging facilities, but about a year and a half later, on August 16, 2025, Solare Hotels & Resorts reopened the site under a new brand as “The Pulse Kirishima” (243 rooms). The site was not cleared after the closure; it resumed operations under a different operator.

The map makes the reason for the confusion even clearer. Kirishima Kanko Hotel, Kirishima Kokusai Hotel, Hotel Kirishima Castle, La Vista Kirishima Hills and Kirishima Spa Hills all sit within a few hundred meters of each other in a straight line. They form a cluster of large properties along the same hillside road, and their names all follow the “Kirishima + ___” pattern. Meanwhile, the closed Active Resorts Kirishima and its successor The Pulse Kirishima, as well as Hoshino Resorts KAI Kirishima and Kannoyu Green Hill Kirishima, are located about 5–7 km southeast in a straight line, in the area near Kirishima Shrine. Geographically, this is closer to a separate market, but all of them tend to be lumped together as “Kirishima hot spring hotels.”

OTA Data — Kirishima Kanko Hotel’s Listed Price Up 6.1% YoY, Turning Above Last Year in September

The hotel’s operations also show up in price data. According to MetroEngines Research, Kirishima Kanko Hotel’s listed price (all-plan average, 2 guests per room, tax included) was ¥52,000 in September 2026, up 6.1% from ¥49,100 in the same month a year earlier. The lowest-plan level also rose, to ¥23,700 in the same month.

The full-year picture is different, however. The monthly average of the all-plan average over the last 12 months (October 2025–September 2026) was ¥44,100, 7.8% below ¥47,800 in the prior-year period. Every month from January to August 2026 came in below the same month a year earlier (the largest drop was −20.0% in April), and the hotel only moved above last year’s level in September. For October–December, listed levels at the time of our survey (¥50,900–¥54,500) are also above the prior-year levels (¥41,800–¥45,300), but prices for future dates may still change. Over the same 12 months, the listed price for Kirishima City as a whole (area median, N=79–95 properties) rose 3.9% YoY, meaning the hotel’s rates ran below the market in the first half of 2026 and recovered from autumn onward.

On a single-date basis, the price range is wide. For Saturday, October 10, 2026, we observed plans ranging from a low of ¥15,400 to a high of ¥167,200, with an average of ¥75,600. On January 2, 2027, the range was ¥62,700 at the low end, ¥102,600 on average and ¥193,600 at the top, a clear upward shift over the New Year holidays. The top of this range is shaped by the hotel’s dining-led product design as an auberge (dinner options such as a black pork dashi shabu-shabu kaiseki and the chef’s-choice “NORM – Rei Kaiseki,” plus a breakfast buffet of about 50 Japanese and Western dishes), along with its premium products: the “SANA” suites with open-air baths (5 rooms) and the dog-friendly annex “D+KIRISHIMA” (4 rooms, each with a free-flowing hot spring open-air bath).

Compared side by side with the main properties in Kirishima Onsen, Kirishima Kanko Hotel’s listed prices sit in the middle of the seven properties for both the all-plan average and the lowest plan. Because property types and room counts differ, the table below is not a ranking but a comparison ordered by opening year.

What this table shows is that Kirishima Onsen has not converged on a single price band. On a lowest-plan basis, prices range from ¥10,800 to ¥49,400, a 4.6x spread, with products layered from room-only and large family-oriented offerings to small luxury properties. Kirishima Kanko Hotel sits in the middle on both the all-plan average and the lowest plan, and its price range is wide. As an auberge, it builds depth in its upper-tier meal-inclusive plans while keeping a floor at the low end.

Kirishima City Supply Up 17.5% in Two Years — New Openings Outpace Closures

The word “closed” suggests a shrinking market, but lodging supply in Kirishima City is in fact expanding. The number of properties in Kirishima City that MetroEngines Research confirmed as active on major booking sites rose from 80 in September 2024 to 94 in September 2026, an increase of 14 properties (+17.5%) in two years.

Estimated settled ADR is also trending up. Kirishima City’s average estimated settled ADR over the last 12 months (October 2025–September 2026) was ¥14,300, up 3.9% from ¥13,800 in the prior-year period. By month, May 2026 was up 11.5% YoY and July up 7.8%, with the biggest gains during the Golden Week holidays and summer. June, on the other hand, swung to −16.2%, showing that off-season demand varies from year to year. For rate levels by city within Kagoshima Prefecture, see our comparison in Kagoshima’s Capital Is Its Cheapest: ADR ¥6,819 vs Kirishima ¥14,330.

Source: Compiled from MetroEngines Research and the HotelBank Editorial Team (coverage: Kirishima City; estimated settled ADR covers 55–59 properties)

Looking at what makes up that supply: while one 123-room property closed in January 2024, the 243-room The Pulse Kirishima opened on the same site in August 2025, and in May 2026 the 104-room Kannoyu Green Hill Kirishima opened just across the city line in Yoshinomoto-cho, Miyakonojo City, Miyazaki (it is not included in the Kirishima City property count). Even within Kirishima City alone, 243 rooms opened against 123 rooms closed, a net increase in large-property supply. It is more accurate to read Kirishima Onsen as being in a reinvestment phase accompanied by operator changes, not a chain of closures.

Where Reviews Place the Hotel Today — Breakfast and Baths in the Area’s Top 10%

We check the hotel’s operating status from one more angle. Guest reviews of Kirishima Kanko Hotel compiled by the HotelBank Editorial Team totaled 677 over the last 12 months, with an overall score of 4.42 / 5.0. Comparing each category against the median for the area (properties in the same category around Kirishima City), the hotel clearly outperforms in three items: meals, baths and breakfast.

Source: HotelBank Editorial Team (last 12 months, N=677, October 2025–September 2026)

Breakfast scored 4.57 (+0.43 vs. the area median, top 10% in the area), baths 4.57 (+0.40, also top 10%) and meals 4.64 (+0.19, also top 10%), showing that the hotel’s core products, its auberge dining and free-flowing hot spring baths, are reflected directly in its ratings. Staff, service, cleanliness and facilities are slightly above the area median, location is in line with the median, and rooms are slightly below it (−0.10).

Actual reviews include comments such as “The hot spring bath overlooking Sakurajima was the best,” “I wanted to shout that the head chef is the best,” and “The room is on high ground, so the view was amazing.” The picture is one of guests supporting the observation-deck large bath with views of Sakurajima and the dining-centered product design. It is hard to imagine a property on its way out accumulating 144 reviews like these in the last 3 months.

B2B Implications — Three Reasons “Closed” Searches Attach to Hotels That Are Still Open

This is not unique to Kirishima. When a single hot spring area has several properties with similar names and even one of them is reported as closing, search demand spills over onto the properties that are still open. We break the mechanism down into three points.

First, name proximity. In Kirishima Onsen, “Kirishima Kanko Hotel,” “Kirishima Kokusai Hotel,” “Kirishima Hotel,” “Hotel Kirishima Castle” and “Kirishima Iwasaki Hotel” all sit within a radius of about 2 km. Naming a property after its location helps with awareness, but it also carries the cost of confusion whenever negative news arises. Searchers often do not remember the exact property name, so searching for “Kirishima + hotel + closed” surfaces the names of properties that are still open.

Second, delays in information updates. The Kirishima Kokusai Hotel case is emblematic: the January 2021 reports that it would “close” circulated nationwide, but the news five months later that it would “stay open” did not spread on the same scale. Initial negative reports travel far; their retractions and updates do not. Because of this asymmetry, the “Kirishima + closed” search context persists more than five years later.

Third, pages for closed properties stay online. Information pages for closed properties remain on travel information and review sites for long periods, marked “(closed).” When these pages rank highly for queries like “Kirishima hotel closed,” they give the whole area an impression of closures. In fact, information about Active Resorts Kirishima remains on several sites still marked as closed, even though The Pulse Kirishima has been operating on the same site since August 2025.

The implications for area operators are clear. First, the frequency of official website updates is itself evidence of operation. The fact that Kirishima Kanko Hotel’s official news section was updated on September 11, 2026 is the first signal of operation a searcher can check. Properties that update their information monthly have an advantage here. Second, redefining the brand name improves distinctiveness. The name “Auberge AUBEGIO Kirishima Kanko Hotel” is easier to distinguish from other properties than a name based only on the location, and it also communicates the property type. Third, misinformed queries are also an acquisition opportunity. For a query with 222 impressions in 90 days, content that clearly states the property is open and describes its current offering turns that search demand directly into a touchpoint with potential bookers.

For Kirishima City as a whole, supply is up 17.5% in two years and estimated settled ADR is up 3.9%, an expansion phase. The new openings of The Pulse Kirishima in August 2025 and Kannoyu Green Hill Kirishima in May 2026 are the result of operators investing on the strength of their demand outlook for the area. There is a considerable gap between the picture of the area implied by the search term “closed” and the picture shown by actual market data.

Summary

Kirishima Kanko Hotel (Auberge AUBEGIO Kirishima Kanko Hotel) is open as of September 2026. Its official website was updated on September 11, 2026, a dog park opened at its dog-friendly annex on September 1, and private saunas were added to its suites in April. Inventory through February 2027 is on sale on major booking sites, and its listed price (all-plan average) was ¥52,000 in September 2026, up 6.1% YoY.

The “closed” search context most likely stems from other properties in Kirishima Onsen, such as Kirishima Kokusai Hotel, whose closure plan was reported in January 2021 (it stayed open from June that year under a management contract), Active Resorts Kirishima, which closed in January 2024, and Kirishima Iwasaki Hotel, which has been shut since November 2017. Yet The Pulse Kirishima (243 rooms) opened on the former Active Resorts Kirishima site in August 2025, listed properties in Kirishima City grew from 80 to 94 in two years, and estimated settled ADR rose 3.9% YoY on a 12-month average basis. The market itself is expanding.

⚠ Note on prices for future dates: Listed prices shown in this article for October 2026 onward are the selling prices published on major booking sites at the time of our survey and will change as check-in dates approach. Please note that current levels will not necessarily become the settled prices.
