What Kind of Place Was Green Plaza Shinjuku?
Green Plaza Shinjuku was a multi-purpose commercial facility in Kabukicho, Shinjuku Ward. It opened in 1983 (according to our 2018 article). Inside were a sauna, a large public bath, 600 capsule hotel rooms, nap rooms, restaurants and an izakaya, a shop, massage rooms and a multi-storey car park. It served office workers who had missed the last train and people who came to spend the night for the bath and sauna.
Its formula, a capsule hotel where the large bath and sauna were the real draw, is probably why people still search for its name today. In the fiscal year ended March 2004 it took in annual revenue of about ¥2.4 billion.

Will Green Plaza Shinjuku Come Back?
As of November 2026, we could find no official announcement of a reopening or revival of Green Plaza Shinjuku.Claims of a “revival” remain speculation on blogs and similar sites. Because the operating company itself was dissolved and entered special liquidation in 2018, there is no basis for expecting it to return under the same name and the same operator.
If you come across a lodging with the same name, check its address and operating company on its official website before booking. It is most likely unrelated to the former Kabukicho facility.
Capsule Hotels in Shinjuku Ward Today: 7 Properties, ¥16,200 per Room for Two
In OTA listed rates compiled by the HotelBank Editorial Team, capsule hotels in Shinjuku Ward for October 2026 stays came to 7 properties (N=7) at ¥16,200 for two guests per room (tax included). Business hotels in the same ward (N=86) were ¥28,600 and hostels (N=36) ¥29,000, so capsule hotels remain the most affordable lodging type in Shinjuku Ward.
Figure 1: OTA listed rates by lodging type in Shinjuku Ward (October 2026 stays, two guests per room, per room, tax included; compiled November 4, 2026; HotelBank Editorial Team). Capsule hotels N=7, hostels N=36, business hotels N=86, adults-only N=23.
Note that these figures are on a two-guests-per-room basis. Capsule hotels are usually sold one bunk per person, so a stay for two is counted as two capsules. Simply halving the figure gives about ¥8,100 per person, but that is only a rough guide; actual single-guest rates move widely with the day of week and booking timing. For date-by-date measurements of single-guest capsule rates, see Capsule Hotel Prices in Japan: ¥3,500–9,000 Weekdays, ¥10k+ Saturdays.
For November stays (rates listed as of November 4, 2026), Shinjuku Ward capsule hotels were ¥18,100 (N=7), about ¥1,900 higher than in October. Book early for dates when the autumn travel season overlaps with weekends.
| Ward | Properties (N) | Listed rate |
|---|---|---|
| Minato | 9 | ¥18,940 |
| Shinjuku | 7 | ¥16,151 |
| Chiyoda | 4 | ¥17,972 |
| Taito | 3 | ¥16,457 |
| Tokyo overall | 33 | ¥15,494 |

Ward figures shown only for wards with three or more properties (Minato N=9, Shinjuku N=7, Chiyoda N=4, Taito N=3). Tokyo overall N=33.
Shinjuku Ward has the second-largest number of capsule hotels after Minato, and its rates are on the low side among the four wards. It is roughly level with Tokyo overall (N=33, ¥15,500), an easy price range to use given its location in the middle of the entertainment district.
If the Bath and Sauna Matter Most, Search This Way
What people who miss Green Plaza Shinjuku are looking for is probably less a cheap bed than a big bath and a sauna to sweat in. To find a place in Shinjuku that comes close, narrowing down in the following order keeps things simple.
- Tick “large bath” and “sauna” in the facility filters: Shinjuku Ward has only seven capsule hotels, so filtering for bathing facilities first makes the candidates clear at a glance. Places that list a cold plunge or an outdoor cooling-off area are serious about their sauna.
- Check who can stay: Capsule hotels come in several forms, such as men-only, with a women’s floor, or with separate floors for men and women. Women and pairs will feel more at ease choosing a place with a suitable floor.
- Choose by nearest exit: The Kabukicho/Shinjuku Station East Exit side, the Nishi-Shinjuku side and the Shinjuku-sanchome side differ both for evenings and for getting around the next morning. Picking the side closest to the next day’s plans makes for an easier morning.
- Look at check-in times and length of stay: If you arrive late at night, choose a place that accepts late check-ins or offers plans that include sauna use.
If you don’t need a capsule and simply want to enjoy a sauna or large bath at a central Tokyo hotel, see 5 adults-oriented hotels in central Tokyo with outstanding spas, saunas and large baths (in Japanese), which includes BELLUSTAR TOKYO in the upper floors of Tokyu Kabukicho Tower in Shinjuku. How Hostels and Adults-Only Lodgings Differ
In Shinjuku Ward there are other options for staying cheaply and casually besides capsule hotels. Their strengths are as follows.
| Lodging type | Properties (N) | Listed rate | Strengths / who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capsule hotel | 7 | ¥16,151 | The most affordable for one person. Some have a large bath and sauna; suits solo travelers who put the bath and sleep first |
| Hostel | 36 | ¥29,020 | Choose from dormitories to private rooms; many have a shared lounge. Suits meeting other travelers and longer stays |
| Business hotel | 86 | ¥28,560 | A lockable private room with its own bathroom. Some have a large bath; suits pairs and business trips |
| Adults-only | 23 | ¥35,565 | A calm, adults-only setting. Suits pairs who want to relax |
OTA listed rates (October 2026 stays, two guests per room, per room, tax included; compiled November 4, 2026; HotelBank Editorial Team).
Hostels’ per-room rate for two exceeds that of business hotels because stays for two tend to be counted in private rooms and group rooms. If you are renting a single bed on your own, a hostel dormitory or a capsule hotel is cheaper. When staying as a pair, compare the gap between a business hotel twin and two capsules (about ¥12,000) and decide whether you value the security of a private room or the size of the bath. For city-by-city rates for two at business hotels and how to choose between double and twin rooms, see Business Hotel Double or Twin for Two in Japan: ¥16,067 a Night (2026).
Compared with Other Wards: Capsules Cost Just Under 60% of a Business Hotel Everywhere
Is Shinjuku Ward uniquely cheap? Lining up the four wards with three or more capsule hotels against business hotels and hostels in the same ward, two capsules (two guests per room) cost 56.6–59.6% of one business hotel room in every ward. The gap is about ¥11,800–14,100, and at 56.6% Shinjuku has the lowest ratio of the four.
| Ward | Capsule hotel | Business hotel | Hostel | Capsule ÷ business |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minato | ¥18,940 N=9 |

OTA listed rates (October 2026 stays, two guests per room, per room, tax included; compiled November 4, 2026; HotelBank Editorial Team). N is the number of properties counted for each ward and lodging type.
The number of properties also differs. Shinjuku Ward has 86 business hotels against 7 capsule hotels; not as lopsided as Taito Ward (181 business hotels, 3 capsules), but capsules are still a type with few choices. Once those seven start filling up on weekends or event days, alternatives are hard to find, so capsule fans should check availability as soon as their dates are set. Hostels, by contrast, show high per-room rates for two in Minato (¥60,200) and Chiyoda (¥44,700); in some wards group rooms push the average up.

Methodology and Sources
■ Data source
Rates are OTA listed rates compiled by the HotelBank Editorial Team (lodging in Tokyo averaged by lodging type and ward). Covers October 2026 stays (November stays for reference), based on listings as of November 4, 2026. The facility’s history is based on our November 11, 2018 article and on press coverage of the closure notice (J-CAST News, September 13, 2016).
■ Calculation assumptions
Listed rates are averages for two guests per room, per room, tax included. For capsule hotels, two guests are counted as two capsules. The “about ¥8,100 per person” in the text is a rough guide obtained simply by halving the per-room rate for two, not a measured single-guest rate. “Capsule ÷ business” in Table 4 is the ratio of the two averages in the same ward. Ward-level figures by lodging type are shown only for wards with three or more properties.
■ Limitations
Listed rates are not booked prices and vary by day of week, booking timing and plan mix. Shinjuku Ward capsule hotels are a small sample (N=7), so a price change at a single property can move the average. Hostels’ per-room rates for two depend on the share of private and group rooms. On the use of the Green Plaza Shinjuku site and any reopening, only facts confirmed in official or primary sources are stated.
