Travel Styles

Capsule hotel rates are ¥3,500–¥9,000 for one person on a weekday (tax included), and often above ¥10,000 on Saturdays. The HotelBank Editorial Team measured the lowest one-person rate at 24 capsule hotels across Japan on three dates (Saturday, November 14; Wednesday, November 18; Saturday, December 5) using OTA listed prices as of October 15, 2026. The median was ¥5,610 on the weekday (November 18) and ¥13,357 on the Saturday (November 14). This article is for first-time capsule hotel guests and covers everything needed to decide how much to budget, what moves the price and how to choose.

Capsule hotels are sold per person, so every price in this article is the lowest OTA listed price for one person, one night, tax included. We did not use two-person room rates divided by two, nor area-average room rates.

Key Takeaways
  • — Weekdays center on ¥3,500–¥9,000. On Wednesday, November 18, the median across 24 properties was ¥5,610, and 20 of the 24 fell in this band (lowest OTA listed price for one person, tax included, as of October 15, 2026).
  • — Expect more than ¥10,000 on Saturdays. On Saturday, November 14, 17 of 24 properties were at ¥10,000 or more, with a median of ¥13,357. At the 13 Tokyo properties, the same property cost 1.2–3.0 times its weekday rate on Saturday.
  • — Tokyo is about ¥3,000 higher than regional cities on weekdays. The weekday median was ¥7,071 for the 13 Tokyo properties and ¥3,929 for the 11 outside Tokyo.
  • — The gap with a business hotel for one guest is largest on weekdays. On Wednesday, November 18, the difference was about ¥13,000–¥27,000 in Shinjuku and about ¥6,000–¥20,000 in Namba, Osaka.
  • — Whether booking early pays off depends on the brand. Over the month from September 15 to October 15, the five Anshin Oyado locations in Tokyo rose on every comparable date (+19% to +68%), while Nine Hours cut prices at 4 of its 7 properties for Saturday, December 5.

Putting the 24 properties together, on the weekday 20 of 24 fall in the ¥3,500–¥9,000 band (median ¥5,610), and on the Saturday 17 of 24 are at ¥10,000 or more (median ¥13,357). Only two properties exceeded ¥9,000 on November 18 — Anshin Oyado Akihabara (¥9,252) and the women-only Anshin Oyado Premier Shimbashi Shiodome (¥10,716) — both Anshin Oyado locations with artificial hot-spring baths and saunas.

Guest feedback is consistent with these price bands. In 950 guest reviews of Y’s CABIN Osaka Namba (October 2024 – October 2026, compiled by the HotelBank Editorial Team), comments such as “clean and easy to use” and “in the ¥3,000s to ¥4,000s when it’s cheap” appear, and the 803 reviews of Nine Hours Akasaka (same period) also stand out for remarks like “clean, with everything you need.”

Five factors that move the price — day of week, area, sauna, women’s floors and cabin type

1. Day of week: the same property costs 1.2–3 times more on Saturday (13 Tokyo properties)

Day of week matters most. At the 13 Tokyo properties, Saturday, November 14 ÷ Wednesday, November 18 came to 1.2–3.0 times: Shinjuku Kuyakusho-mae Capsule Hotel went from ¥5,893 to ¥13,357 (2.27x), Nine Hours Akasaka from ¥4,714 to ¥12,571 (2.67x) and Anshin Oyado Premier Shinjuku Ekimae from ¥8,352 to ¥20,280 (2.43x). Capsule hotels ride the same demand waves as conventional hotels, so on Saturdays when hotels across the city are expensive, capsules rise too (at conventional hotels in Tokyo, Saturday rates run about 40% above weekdays on average). In Fukuoka, Nine Hours Nakasukawabata Station was sold out at ¥19,700 on Saturday, November 14 — the most expensive day of the month for hotels across Hakata and Tenjin (Why Are Fukuoka Hotels So Expensive? November’s High and Low Days [2026] (HotelPicks, in Japanese) lists daily prices and the events behind them).

2. Area: Tokyo is about ¥3,000 higher than regional cities on weekdays

The weekday median was ¥7,071 for the 13 Tokyo properties and ¥3,929 for the 11 outside Tokyo. Within the same brand, Nine Hours charged ¥4,714 in Akasaka and Suidobashi versus ¥3,929 in Sendai, and Anshin Oyado Premier charged ¥8,352 at Shinjuku Ekimae versus ¥5,580 at Nagoya Sakae — Tokyo is roughly ¥800–¥2,800 higher. In regional cities you can start your search in the ¥3,000–¥4,000 range.

3. Sauna and large bath: the gap is small once bathing fees are counted

Properties built around a sauna and large bath, such as Sauna & Capsule Hotel Hokuou (Ueno) and Capsule & Spa Grand Sauna Shinsaibashi, cost ¥3,500–¥4,300 on weekdays and ¥4,500–¥6,900 even on Saturdays, placing them in the lower band among the 24 properties. Because the sauna’s bathing fee is included in the room rate, the total is easy to predict if you plan to “use the sauna and stay the night.” At Shinjuku Kuyakusho-mae Capsule Hotel, men can also use the large bath and sauna (official website, checked October 15, 2026).

4. Women-only floors and women-only locations: women’s plans are priced separately, even in the same building

Women-only plans have their own inventory and pricing, separate from men’s. The women-only Nine Hours Woman Kanda was ¥7,071 on the weekday, while Nine Hours Akasaka (men’s and women’s pods) was ¥4,714. Anshin Oyado Premier’s women-only locations (Ogikubo ¥6,780, Shimbashi Shiodome ¥10,716) also move independently of the men-only Shimbashi Ekimae location (¥8,780). How capsule operators design their women’s floors is explained in The Structure Behind Regional Capsule Hotels Converting to Mid-Scale Limited-Service Hotels with Women-Only Floors (innippon, in Japanese), using Nine Hours Hakata Station, Nine Hours Sendai and First Cabin Hakata as examples.

5. Cabin type: between a capsule and a private room, ¥6,500–¥7,200 on weekdays

Types with a high ceiling that let you stand up to change, like First Cabin’s “cabins,” cost ¥6,500 at First Cabin Atagoyama and ¥7,200 at First Cabin Akasaka on the weekday. That is ¥1,000–¥2,500 more than a standard capsule, but their Saturday increase of 1.3–2.0 times is smaller than at standard capsules, many of which more than double, so the gap narrows on Saturdays.

For why capsules get hot and how to deal with it, see Why Capsule Hotels Feel Hot in Japan: Shared AC, Upper Bunks & Fixes. Month-long residential capsule plans are outside the scope of this article.

The gap with business hotels’ lowest one-person rate — same date, same area

We tested “capsules are cheap” against one-person business hotel rates on the same dates in the same areas. In Shinjuku on Wednesday, November 18, the lowest capsule rate for one person was ¥5,893–¥8,352 and the lowest business hotel rate for one person was ¥21,300–¥33,155, a gap of about ¥13,000–¥27,000. On Saturday, November 14, business hotels were ¥24,800–¥38,665 and capsules ¥13,357–¥20,280, narrowing the gap to about ¥4,500–¥25,000.

In Namba, Osaka, the weekday gap is about ¥6,000–¥20,000. On Wednesday, November 18, the three capsule hotels were ¥3,700–¥5,640 and the three business hotels ¥11,400–¥24,192. On Saturday (November 14), business hotels rose to ¥33,800–¥58,800, widening the gap with capsules to more than ¥20,000.

In short, for a weekday night the gap starts at about ¥6,000 in Namba and about ¥13,000 in Shinjuku. On Saturdays, some areas see the gap narrow because capsules rise too, while in others business hotels jump even further and the gap widens. If you are staying on a Saturday, compare capsule and business hotel Saturday prices for the same date before deciding. Guesthouse dormitories are another budget option for solo travelers.

When to book — compared with prices a month earlier

For the same three stay dates, we compared each property’s lowest one-person rate a month earlier (as of September 15, 2026) with the rate as of October 15, 2026. For Wednesday, November 18, 13 of 24 properties went up, 8 were unchanged and 3 went down, with a median change of +6.7%. For Saturday, November 14, 8 of 24 properties were already sold out as of October 15 — 30 days before the stay — and among the 16 that could be compared, 9 went up, 4 were unchanged and 3 went down (median change +6.1%). For Saturday, December 5, among the 20 comparable properties, 9 went up, 6 were unchanged and 5 went down, with a median of ±0%.

Table 5: Change in the lowest one-person rate from one month earlier (as of September 15, 2026) to October 15, 2026 (by stay date and brand; median of per-property change)

Lowest OTA listed price for one person, one night, tax included, compared for the same property and stay date as of September 15 and October 15, 2026 (changes under ±0.5% counted as unchanged). Properties sold out as of October 15, and those sold out or not listed as of September 15, are excluded. “Others” covers whichever of the following could be compared: Shinjuku Kuyakusho-mae Capsule Hotel, First Cabin, Y’s CABIN, HOTEL J-SHIP, the three sauna/spa properties, Anshin Oyado Premier Nagoya Sakae, Capsule Hotel CUBE Hiroshima and APODS Himeji Ekimae. Source: HotelBank Editorial Team research.

The movements split by brand. The five Anshin Oyado locations in Tokyo rose on every comparable date (on November 18, all five were up +19% to +68%; Akihabara went from ¥5,504 to ¥9,252). The seven Nine Hours properties, by contrast, saw four price cuts for Saturday, December 5 (Sendai ¥13,357 → ¥6,286, Woman Kanda ¥17,285 → ¥9,428), and for Wednesday, November 18, Suidobashi fell from ¥13,357 to ¥4,714 and Akasaka from ¥6,286 to ¥4,714. Yet Nine Hours Nagoya Station (¥3,929 → ¥5,500) and Nakasukawabata Station (¥4,700 → ¥6,700) rose for November 18 — prices move with how full each location is.

So with brands like Anshin Oyado, where early prices were cheaper, book as soon as you find a good rate; with properties like Nine Hours, whose prices sometimes fall close to the date, check the cancellation terms and keep checking the price after booking. On Saturdays, a third of the properties were already sold out 30 days ahead, so for a Saturday stay, securing a bed should come before chasing the price.

First-timer’s checklist — four items you can confirm on official websites

The following was checked on each major brand’s official website on October 15, 2026. Practices differ by location, so recheck the page for your specific location before booking.

Table 6: How the major brands operate (official websites, checked October 15, 2026)
Item Nine Hours First Cabin Anshin Oyado Shinjuku Kuyakusho-mae Capsule Hotel
Gender-separated floors Has women-only locations (Woman Kanda, Woman Shinjuku); “Other locations also have women-only areas (excluding men-only locations)” “The building is divided into a men’s area and a women’s area.” Some locations have a women-only lounge Split into men-only locations (Shinjuku South Exit, Akihabara Denkigai, Shimbashi Ekimae) and women-only locations (Ginza Shiodome, Shinjuku Ogikubo); Nagoya Sakae has separate men’s and women’s floors Women-only floor available. Men can use the large bath and sauna
Luggage Advance storage on the day of check-in (except Narita Airport). Luggage that doesn’t fit in the locker: “We will store it at the front desk” Storage before and after check-in on the same day only. “Every cabin is equipped with a lockable safety box” “All locations near the station & luggage storage OK” Large luggage that doesn’t fit in the locker goes to the 4th-floor luggage area (no valuables)

Consecutive nights Yes. 11:00–15:00 is cleaning time: “please go out or move to the lounge” Yes. “When booking consecutive nights, you check out only on the final day” Yes. Cleaning rounds 24 hours a day Yes. Even for 2+ nights, you must leave by 11:00 each day (no access 11:00–15:00 during cleaning)

Checked on each brand’s official website on October 15, 2026. Quotations are translated from the official websites. Practices vary by location.

With that in mind, choosing comes down to four points.

  • Match your gender to the plan: on the booking screen, check the plan name for “men only,” “women only” or “for women.” Decide whether you feel safer at a women-only location or at a mixed property with dedicated floors.
  • Match your arrival time to the location’s hours: some locations start check-in at 15:00 (Nine Hours, Shinjuku Kuyakusho-mae) and others at 12:00 (Anshin Oyado). For late-night arrivals, Nine Hours and Shinjuku Kuyakusho-mae accept guests until 5:00.
  • Decide where large luggage goes first: lockers often won’t fit a suitcase. Check the table above for front-desk storage or a luggage area.
  • For consecutive nights, plan for cleaning hours: where you spend the daytime differs between locations like Nine Hours, where you go to the lounge or out during the day, and locations like Anshin Oyado, which allow 27-hour stays.

On price, use ¥5,000–¥8,000 in Tokyo and ¥3,500–¥6,000 in regional cities as a rough weekday ceiling, assume Saturdays will be above ¥10,000, and compare against a business hotel’s one-person rate for the same date. Keep these two points in mind and even a first stay is unlikely to go far wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How much does a capsule hotel cost per night?

A. Based on the lowest OTA listed price for one person, tax included, the weekday (Wednesday, November 18, 2026) median across 24 properties nationwide was ¥5,610, and 20 of the 24 fell within ¥3,500–¥9,000 (as of October 15, 2026). The weekday median was ¥7,071 for the 13 Tokyo properties and ¥3,929 for the 11 properties in Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sendai and elsewhere.

Q. Why are Saturdays more expensive?

A. At the 13 Tokyo properties, the same property costs 1.2–3 times its weekday rate on Saturday (outside Tokyo the spread across properties is wide, at 0.8–5.7 times). On Saturday, November 14, 17 of 24 properties were at ¥10,000 or more, and the median for the 13 Tokyo properties was ¥14,200. Capsules move with the city-wide rise in hotel prices on Saturdays, and climb further on days with concerts or major events.

Q. Can women stay at capsule hotels?

A. Yes. There are women-only locations (Nine Hours Woman Kanda, Anshin Oyado Premier Ogikubo and Shimbashi Shiodome, and others) and locations that separate men’s and women’s floors or areas (every First Cabin location, most Nine Hours locations, and others). When booking, choose a plan labeled “women only” or “for women.”

Q. Can I stay multiple nights? What about luggage?

A. Many locations allow consecutive nights; First Cabin’s official website states that “when booking consecutive nights, you check out only on the final day.” At Nine Hours, 11:00–15:00 is cleaning time, during which you move to the lounge or go out. Most locations store luggage in advance on the day of check-in or keep luggage that doesn’t fit in the locker at the front desk (each official website, checked October 15, 2026).

Q. Which is cheaper, a capsule or a business hotel for one person?

A. Comparing the same date and area, on a weekday in Shinjuku the lowest one-person capsule rate was ¥5,893–¥8,352 and the lowest one-person business hotel rate was ¥21,300–¥33,155, a gap of about ¥13,000–¥27,000. In Namba, Osaka, the weekday gap was also about ¥6,000–¥20,000 (OTA listed prices as of October 15, 2026).

Q. How far ahead should I book to get a lower price?

A. It depends on the brand. Comparing the lowest one-person rate as of September 15 and October 15, 2026, the five Anshin Oyado locations in Tokyo rose on every comparable date (+19% to +68%), while Nine Hours cut prices at 4 of its 7 properties for Saturday, December 5. For Saturday, November 14, 8 of 24 properties were already sold out 30 days ahead, so for a Saturday stay it is safer to book early.

Q. Are capsule hotels with saunas more expensive?

A. Among the 24 properties this time they were in the lower band. Sauna & Capsule Hotel Hokuou (Ueno), Capsule & Spa Grand Sauna Shinsaibashi and Capsule & Sauna Kawasaki BIG cost ¥3,500–¥4,300 on weekdays and ¥4,500–¥6,900 on Saturdays, with bathing fees included in the room rate (OTA listed prices as of October 15, 2026).

Prices: the lowest one-person, one-night, tax-included plan price listed on one major Japanese OTA (as of October 15, 2026; HotelBank Editorial Team research). ■ Calculation basis

The median is the middle value of each property’s lowest one-person rate. “Saturday is X times the weekday” is the same property’s Saturday, November 14 ÷ Wednesday, November 18. The change rates in Table 5 compare the same property’s lowest one-person rate for the same stay date as of September 15 and October 15, 2026; changes under ±0.5% were treated as unchanged. For sold-out properties, the last listed price before selling out is shown with “*” and excluded from the Table 5 comparison.

■ Limitations

These are listed prices on one site; cheaper plans may appear on other booking sites or official websites. Coupons and member discounts are not reflected. The figures come from three stay dates, and levels change with the season and overlapping events. Prices for future stay dates may change.
