If you want to stay near the sea on Japan's Sea of Japan coast this summer, budget roughly ¥20,000–¥50,000 per night for a room for two. Looking at OTA listed prices for August 2026 stays (one room, two guests, tax included; compiled by the HotelBank Editorial Team on October 30, 2026) across 18 seaside cities and towns, the cheapest is Itoigawa in Niigata at ¥20,100 (N=7) and the most expensive is Sakai in Fukui at ¥50,200 (N=11) — a 2.5x spread. What drives the gap is not how prestigious a place is but the mix of accommodation: cities with plenty of business hotels around the station sit in the ¥20,000s, while beach towns built around onsen ryokan and whole-house rentals sit in the ¥40,000s. This article turns that spread into "which town, and for how much," then covers how to choose by purpose (swimming, sunsets, summer seafood) and by budget, and how much more a Saturday costs than a weekday in August.
- — ¥20,000–¥50,000 per room for two: Listed prices for August 2026 stays range from ¥20,100 in Itoigawa, Niigata (N=7) to ¥50,200 in Sakai, Fukui (N=11) across 18 seaside municipalities — a 2.5x spread.
- — The accommodation mix drives the gap: Tottori City and Tsuruga, with many business hotels near the station, sit in the ¥20,000s; Kyotango, Miyazu and Sakai, built around onsen ryokan and whole-house rentals, sit in the ¥40,000s.
- — August is pricier than July in all 18 municipalities: The premium runs from +¥1,500 in Kashiwazaki to +¥5,900 in Miyazu, and is largest in beach towns dominated by ryokan and minshuku.
- — Saturdays cost more than weekdays: Business hotels around Tottori Station average ¥9,808 on weekdays and ¥12,709 on Saturdays for their cheapest plan (+30%); ryokan around Amanohashidate are +15%.
- — Summer seafood is not crab: Rock oysters, shiroika squid, nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch) and Toyama Bay white shrimp are in season in summer. Crab is a winter delicacy.
How Much Is a Summer Stay on the Sea of Japan? A 2.5x Gap Between Cheap and Expensive Towns
The table below ranks August listed prices for 18 municipalities that face the Sea of Japan (or have a swimming beach), from cheapest to most expensive. Wajima in Ishikawa came out highest at ¥51,000, but only two properties (N=2) had observable prices, so it is excluded from the table and chart and mentioned only in this note.
| Municipality | August (room for two, tax incl.) | vs July | N | Accommodation type and seaside highlights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Itoigawa (Niigata) | ¥20,115 | +¥1,896 | 7 | Mostly ryokan, but small ones. Oyashirazu and the Hisui (Jade) Coast |
| Tottori City (Tottori) | ¥20,766 | +¥2,923 | 14 | Mostly business hotels near the station. Tottori Sand Dunes, Hakuto Beach |
| Tsuruga (Fukui) | ¥21,793 | +¥2,152 | 12 | Mostly business hotels. Kehi-no-Matsubara pine-lined beach |
| Hamada (Shimane) | ¥23,810 | +¥2,929 | 8 | A mix of ryokan, whole-house rentals and business hotels. Sunsets at Iwami Seaside Park |
| Kashiwazaki (Niigata) | ¥26,298 | +¥1,482 | 6 | Roughly half business hotels, half ryokan. Kujiranami beach |
| Murakami (Niigata) | ¥29,189 | +¥5,669 | 11 | Senami Onsen ryokan. A well-known sunset spot |
| Tsuruoka (Yamagata) | ¥30,344 | +¥3,373 | 31 | Onsen ryokan in Yunohama and Yura |
| Sado (Niigata) | ¥31,228 | +¥3,663 | 18 | A mix of ryokan, minshuku and whole-house rentals |
| Kaga (Ishikawa) | ¥31,376 | +¥3,318 | 43 | Onsen ryokan in Yamashiro and Katayamazu. Beach: Katano Coast |
| Takahama (Fukui) | ¥31,716 | +¥5,499 | 8 | Ryokan and minshuku facing Wakasa Wada Beach |
| Oga (Akita) | ¥36,275 | +¥2,513 | 7 | Mostly onsen ryokan. Sunsets at Cape Nyudozaki |
| Iwami (Tottori) | ¥37,798 | +¥5,864 | 4 | Uradome Coast ryokan. Minshuku from around ¥16,000 |
| Izumo (Shimane) | ¥39,195 | +¥4,406 | 25 | Mostly whole-house rentals and onsen ryokan. Hinomisaki, Inasa Beach |
| Nanao (Ishikawa) | ¥39,240 | +¥4,648 | 14 | Mostly Wakura Onsen ryokan |
| Kyotango (Kyoto) | ¥40,162 | +¥2,400 | 70 | Ryokan at Yuhigaura and Kotohikihama; some whole-house rentals |
| Miyazu (Kyoto) | ¥43,262 | +¥5,921 | 20 | Amanohashidate ryokan, resorts and whole-house rentals |
| Himi (Toyama) | ¥46,912 | +¥5,063 | 13 | Mostly seaside ryokan and minshuku |
| Sakai (Fukui) | ¥50,150 | +¥4,576 | 11 | Ryokan and resort hotels around Tojinbo and Mikuni |
The four cheapest — Itoigawa, Tottori City, Tsuruga and Hamada — line up in the low ¥20,000s. In Tottori City, 14 business hotels had observable August prices, averaging ¥16,700. That is less than half the ¥34,400 average of its 13 ryokan, and it pulls the citywide average down into the ¥20,000s. Tsuruga shows the same pattern: 12 business hotels at ¥15,900 versus 6 ryokan at ¥26,500. Stay at a hotel near the station and drive or take a bus to the beach — that combination is the cheapest way to spend a summer night on the Sea of Japan.
At the expensive end, the mix flips. Kyotango had 70 ryokan and 7 whole-house rentals (holiday homes) with observable August prices; the ryokan averaged ¥44,500 and the rentals ¥41,000. In Miyazu, 20 ryokan averaged ¥42,800, while 6 whole-house rentals stood far above the rest at ¥89,900. In Sakai, 4 resort hotels averaged ¥50,300 and 11 ryokan ¥40,200. Whether it is an onsen ryokan with dinner or a self-catering rental, choosing "a place right on the sea with dinner and a bath" puts you in the ¥40,000s. The price structure of the seven Tango municipalities, including Kyotango and Miyazu, is broken down town by town in Kyoto by the Sea: Two Hotel Markets, ¥27,700 vs ¥6,300 ADR (2026).
In between, the towns around ¥30,000 tend to have ryokan, minshuku and business hotels side by side. Sado splits into tiers — 18 ryokan at ¥35,800, 13 minshuku at ¥20,800 and 5 business hotels at ¥17,900 — so the type you pick on the island can nearly double or halve what you pay. In Iwami, 4 ryokan average ¥39,300 against ¥16,500 for 3 minshuku; choose a minshuku on the Uradome Coast and you stay under ¥20,000.

The smallest premiums are in Kashiwazaki (+¥1,500), Itoigawa (+¥1,900) and Tsuruga (+¥2,200); of these, Kashiwazaki and Tsuruga are towns where business hotels carry a lot of weight. Properties priced around weekday demand tend to move less once the summer holidays begin. By contrast, Miyazu (+¥5,900), Iwami (+¥5,900), Murakami (+¥5,700), Takahama (+¥5,500) and Himi (+¥5,100) are towns centered on ryokan and minshuku, where demand from August beachgoers piles up. If you can go in July, the same property is likely to cost around ¥5,000 less. How ryokan and business hotels fill differently across the week is shown with measured data for Fukui Prefecture in Fukui Ryokan Sat 90.9% vs Mon 76.3%: Business Hotels Dip on Sunday.
The same trend shows up at the prefecture level. August listed prices across the nine prefectures run from ¥27,300 in Akita to ¥41,700 in Kyoto. The July-to-August increase is largest in Fukui (+¥4,300) and Ishikawa (+¥4,100), while Kyoto rose only ¥1,400. Kyoto's figure covers the whole prefecture, including hotels in Kyoto City, so if you are only interested in the Tango beach towns, rely on the municipal table above.

Choosing by Purpose: Swimming, Sunsets and Summer Seafood
Towns where you can walk to the beach
If you want a town where the inns line the beach itself, the candidates are Takahama in Fukui (Wakasa Wada Beach), Kyotango in Kyoto (Kotohikihama, Yuhigaura, Shotenkyo), Iwami in Tottori (Uradome Coast), Murakami in Niigata (Senami Onsen beach) and Tsuruoka in Yamagata (Yunohama, Yura). All lean heavily toward ryokan and minshuku and cost ¥30,000–¥40,000-plus in August, but it is fair to assume that being able to walk back to your room in your swimsuit is part of that price. With small children, Wakasa Wada Beach — known for its shallow water and calm waves — is an easy choice.
To keep accommodation costs down, stay at a business hotel in Tottori City or Tsuruga and drive to the beach. Tottori Sand Dunes Beach and Hakuto Beach are 20–30 minutes by car from central Tottori, and Kehi-no-Matsubara in Tsuruga is about 10 minutes by car from the station. Around Tottori Station you will find national chains such as Toyoko Inn, APA Hotel and Tottori Washington Hotel Plaza, which have parking and are relatively easy to book even in summer.
Watching the sunset from your room or the beach
The big summer advantage of the Sea of Japan coast is watching the sun set over the sea from where you stay. Signature spots include Hamazume in Kyotango, home to the aptly named Yuhigaura ("Sunset Bay"); Senami Onsen in Murakami, Niigata; Hinomisaki and Inasa Beach in Izumo, Shimane; Iwami Seaside Park in Hamada; Cape Nyudozaki in Oga, Akita; and Mikuni Sunset Beach in Sakai, Fukui. Sunset in early August is around 7 p.m., which tends to clash with dinner. Pick a sea-facing room, or an inn that lets you start dinner at 7:30 p.m. or later, and you can watch the sunset from your room before sitting down to eat.
Summer seafood: what is in season besides crab
Sea of Japan seafood is closely associated with crab, but summer has different stars. Rock oysters (iwagaki) fatten up from June to August; in Tottori the wild rock-oyster season is limited to June 1–August 31, and they also appear on summer menus along the Shonai coast in Yamagata and in Tango, Kyoto. Shiroika (swordtip squid) from Tottori and Shimane, nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch) from Hamada in Shimane, and white shrimp from Toyama Bay also reach their best in summer. For inns that build their summer menus around rock oysters, this article (in Japanese) compares five in Shonai, Tango and Tottori, including how serving periods differ from inn to inn. Winter crab prices are covered separately in our Crab Season 2026 article, so refer to that if you are going in winter.
Recommended Towns by Budget: Three Tiers
| Budget (room for two, tax incl.) | Towns | Accommodation type | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low ¥20,000s | Tottori City, Tsuruga, Itoigawa, Hamada | Business hotels near the station, small ryokan | Use the room just for sleeping; drive to the dunes or pine-lined beaches by day. Eat seafood at markets and local restaurants |
| Around ¥30,000 to low ¥30,000s | Murakami, Tsuruoka, Sado, Takahama, Kashiwazaki, Kaga | Seaside onsen ryokan, minshuku | Stay within walking distance of the beach, watch the sunset and dine at the inn. Choosing a minshuku brings it down to the ¥20,000s |
| ¥40,000–¥50,000 | Kyotango, Miyazu, Himi, Sakai, Izumo, Nanao | Onsen ryokan, resort hotels, whole-house rentals | Make the stay itself the focus, with a sea-view room and dinner. Whole-house rentals suit families and groups |
In a place like Sado, where the range of accommodation on the island is wide, the month and day of the week you choose can move the bill considerably. Monthly and day-of-week prices on Sado are laid out from the listed prices of 50 properties on the island in a separate article (in Japanese), which is worth checking before you fix your dates if you choose the island.
How Much More Is a Saturday Than a Weekday in August? Measured in Tottori and Miyazu
All of August is expensive, but Saturday nights are a step higher still. For properties around Tottori Station and around Amanohashidate, we took listed prices for four Saturdays in August 2026 (the 1st, 8th, 22nd and 29th) and six Tuesdays/Wednesdays (the 4th, 5th, 18th, 19th, 25th and 26th) for each property and averaged them by type. The Obon week (11th–16th) behaves differently and is excluded.
| Area and type | Properties | Weekday (Tue/Wed) | Saturday | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Around Tottori Station, business hotels (all-plan average) | 15 | ¥15,570 | ¥20,161 | +29% |
| Same, cheapest plan | 15 | ¥9,808 | ¥12,709 | +30% |
| Around Amanohashidate, ryokan (all-plan average) | 9 | ¥78,410 | ¥93,417 | +19% |
| Same, cheapest plan | 9 | ¥46,593 | ¥53,778 | +15% |
OTA listed prices for one room, two guests, tax included (sales plans listed for two adults). Observations: Tottori City business hotels, 57 Saturday and 85 weekday; Miyazu ryokan, 36 Saturday and 49 weekday. The all-plan average includes upper-tier rooms and anniversary plans, so use the cheapest-plan row as a guide to what you will actually pay. HotelBank Editorial Team research (compiled October 30, 2026).
Business hotels around Tottori Station come in at just under ¥10,000 for a room for two on the cheapest weekday plan, and around ¥13,000 even on a Saturday — a restrained price range for a summer stay by the sea. The Saturday premium of +29–30% looks large as a percentage, but in yen it is just under ¥3,000. Ryokan around Amanohashidate rise by a smaller +15–19%, so even on a Saturday you pay a little under 1.2 times the weekday rate. In short, the cheaper the town, the bigger the Saturday jump in percentage terms; the pricier the town, the smaller the day-of-week gap. If saving money is the priority, aim for "a weekday in a cheap town"; if you want time at a ryokan on the sea, choosing the month — July or September — matters more than choosing the day. How Saturday nights in Tottori Prefecture fill up in the final two weeks is tracked through fixed-point observation of 190 properties in Tottori Saturdays: Ryokan +10.1pt in Final 2 Weeks, 18.7pt Sep Gap.
What to Bring and Know for Summer on the Sea of Japan
- Water shoes: Even sandy beaches such as Tottori Sand Dunes Beach, the Uradome Coast and Kotohikihama have patches mixed with rocks. By midday the sand gets too hot to walk on barefoot.
- Jellyfish: Jellyfish increase on the Sea of Japan side after Obon. If you swim in late August, bring a rash guard and stay within lifeguarded swimming areas.
- Sunset times: Around 7 p.m. in early August, moving earlier to about 6:30 p.m. by late August. Ask the inn about dinner start times in advance so you can watch the sunset from the beach before eating.
- Getting around: In beach towns, the swimming beach is often some distance from the train station. If you plan to stay at a business hotel and head to the sea, assume a rental car.
- Booking seafood: Many inns attach serving periods and booking deadlines (the day before or two days before) to a la carte rock oysters and summer-only set menus. Once your dates are set, check with the inn first.

It also notes that serving periods differ by inn, from mid-June to end-July or mid-July to late August.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How much does it cost to stay near the sea on the Sea of Japan coast in summer?
A. Based on OTA listed prices for August 2026 stays (one room for two, tax included), prices across 18 seaside municipalities range from ¥20,100 (Itoigawa, Niigata) to ¥50,200 (Sakai, Fukui). Expect the ¥20,000s in cities with many business hotels and the ¥40,000s in beach towns centered on onsen ryokan and whole-house rentals.
Q. What is the cheapest way to stay?
A. Stay on a weekday in a city like Tottori or Tsuruga, where business hotels cluster around the station, and drive to the beach. Business hotels around Tottori Station averaged ¥9,800 for their cheapest plan on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in August (room for two, 15 properties).
Q. How big is the difference between July and August?
A. August is more expensive in all 18 municipalities, with premiums from ¥1,500 in Kashiwazaki to ¥5,900 in Miyazu. The gap is largest in beach towns centered on ryokan and minshuku; in many towns, going in July saves around ¥5,000.

Methodology and Sources
All prices are OTA public data compiled by the HotelBank Editorial Team (listed prices, two guests per room, per room, tax included), retrieved on October 30, 2026. Municipal and prefectural figures are monthly averages for July and August 2026 stays, and N is the number of properties with observable August prices. Averages by accommodation type (business hotel, ryokan, minshuku, holiday rental, resort hotel) use the same August stays. For the Saturday vs weekday comparison, we took 23 operating properties with 10 or more rooms within a 3 km radius of Tottori Station and 13 properties meeting the same criteria within 3 km of Amanohashidate, averaged each property's listed prices for August 1, 8, 22 and 29, 2026 (Saturdays) and August 4, 5, 18, 19, 25 and 26 (Tuesdays/Wednesdays), and then took a simple average by type. The all-plan average is the mean of all observed sales plans; the cheapest plan is the lowest price on each date. Wajima is excluded from the table and chart (N=2). Swimming beaches, sunset spots and fishing seasons are based on public information from local governments and fisheries organizations. Listed prices may differ from actual booking prices and exclude accommodation tax and bathing tax.
■ Data Sources
Municipal, prefectural and by-type prices are OTA listed prices compiled by the HotelBank Editorial Team (monthly averages for July and August 2026 stays, room for two, tax incl., retrieved October 30, 2026). The Saturday vs weekday comparison uses daily August listed prices for properties within 3 km of Tottori Station and Amanohashidate. Swimming beaches, sunset spots and fishing seasons are based on public information from local governments and fisheries organizations.
■ Calculation Assumptions
Municipal prices are averages of properties with observable August prices (N = number of properties). The Saturday vs weekday gap compares listed prices for four Saturdays (excluding Obon week) and six Tuesdays/Wednesdays, averaged per property and then simple-averaged by type. Whole-house rental prices are listed prices queried for one room, two guests, and do not reflect per-person rates for larger groups.
■ Limitations
Listed prices are averages based on sales plans at the time of the query and may differ from actual booking prices. Accommodation tax and bathing tax are not included. In municipalities with N below 10 (Itoigawa, Hamada, Kashiwazaki, Takahama, Oga, Iwami), averages can move with just a few properties. Wajima is excluded from the table and chart (N=2). Prefectural figures cover each prefecture as a whole, including urban hotels.
