Closed Ryokan Still Bookable on Agoda: 12 Japan Closures Checked

Heiseikan Kaiyotei (平成館 海羊亭), a ryokan in Hakodate’s Yunokawa Onsen, has announced on its official website that it will close temporarily for stays from November 15, 2026 through April 15, 2027[1]. Yet on Agoda, as of November 2, dates within the closure period showed a “Book now!” button and could be booked. On the Agoda page of the former Hotel Nagoya Castle (ホテル ナゴヤ キャッスル) — which stopped operating in 2020 next to Nagoya Castle, with a different new hotel since opened on the site — rooms that appear to date from the old hotel were also on sale. On the other hand, of the 12 properties whose closure or temporary-closure dates have been made public, 11 were not selling dates after closure on Agoda either. The HotelBank Editorial Team checked each closure announcement against Agoda’s booking screens, one property at a time.

About This Survey
• Date checked: November 2, 2026 (screens checked between 14:00 and 15:59 JST)
• Method 1: For 12 properties whose closure or temporary-closure dates could be confirmed through official announcements or news reports, we opened each property’s Agoda page for a stay date after closure (1 room, 2 adults, 1 night) and checked whether bookable rooms were displayed
• Method 2: For 480 properties with 10 or more rooms that have stopped selling on Japan’s major booking sites but remain listed on Agoda, we performed the same check for a December 10, 2026 stay. Of the properties showing bookable rooms, 86 had their operating status verified through official websites, operator announcements, news reports and similar sources
• No bookings were made. We checked what was displayed on screen; we did not verify whether a booking would actually be confirmed, or how it would be handled if it were
• Yellow highlighting in the screenshots was added by the editorial team. Displays reflect the time of checking and may have changed since

A Closure Notice Alongside “Book Now” — Heiseikan Kaiyotei (Hakodate)

Heiseikan Kaiyotei is a ryokan in Yunokawa Onsen. Its official website and its operator, Toho Resort (トーホウリゾート), announced a temporary closure on October 1, 2026, covering “stays from Sunday, November 15, 2026” through “stays on Thursday, April 15, 2027,” with operations resuming from check-in on April 16, 2027[1][2].

However, opening the property’s page on Agoda and searching for December 10, 2026 — within the closure period — for 1 room and 2 adults displayed a Japanese-style room (8 tatami mats, non-smoking) at ¥21,650 per night (tax and service included, 2 adults). The rate field read “Lucky! This is the lowest price we’ve found!”, next to a “Proceed to booking” button and a “Last room” label. The lowest price shown at the top of the page was also ¥21,650, and we found no mention of the closure anywhere on the page.

A search for November 20 — the sixth day of the closure — showed the same Japanese-style room with “75% OFF today! Book at the lowest price” and “Our last room!”, with the button reading “Book now! Pay later.”

It was not just December 10 and November 20. When we checked 14 dates spanning the first to the last day of the closure under the same conditions, bookable rooms appeared on 9 of them, including November 15, the first day of the closure. For the 5 dates with no availability shown, the screen does not reveal whether the rooms were treated as sold out or sales had been stopped.

If the screens are taken at face value, a guest who books without knowing about the closure could end up paying in advance and then arriving at a shuttered ryokan. The December 10 room stated “Book today, pay on [December 1, 2026],” which leaves the guest few chances to notice the closure until just before the stay. Whether this inventory stems from the property’s own settings or from processing on the side of Agoda or a wholesale supplier cannot be determined from the screen.

Rooms Sold on the Page of a Hotel That Closed in 2020 — Former Hotel Nagoya Castle (Nagoya)

Hotel Nagoya Castle, located west of Nagoya Castle, operated until 2020. On October 1, 2025, Espacio Nagoya Castle (エスパシオ ナゴヤキャッスル), operated by the Kowa Group, opened on the site, with 100 rooms averaging over 70 square meters[3][4].

Separately from the new hotel’s page, Agoda still hosts a page under the old hotel name, “ホテル ナゴヤ キャッスル (HOTEL NAGOYA CASTLE)”. Its photos show the building before reconstruction, and the “Messages from the property” section still read: “The property will be closed from October 1, 2020. We are planning to reopen, targeting an opening in 2024.”

Specifying December 10, 2026 on this page displayed a 41-square-meter “Deluxe Double Room with Castle View” at ¥206,564 per night (tax and service included, 2 adults), together with a “Proceed to booking” button and a “Last room” label. Room names that appear to date from the old hotel, such as “Castle Side Standard Twin Room (Smoking),” were also listed (shown as sold out). Of four checks on November 2, prices were displayed in three.

The new hotel at the same address (3-19 Hinokuchi-cho, Nishi-ku, Nagoya) has a separate page on Agoda, where rooms of 50–61 square meters were on sale from a lowest price of ¥119,635. If a guest books through the old hotel’s page, the screen does not show which property receives the booking or how it is handled.

Still Under the Old Name After a Brand Change — Hotel Base Nara (Nara)

There were also cases where a change of property name or brand had not been reflected. A hotel in Abura-saka, Nara City, is currently presented on its operator’s website as “HOTEL BASE NARA”[5]. On Agoda, the property at the same address is listed as “Tabist Hotel Base Nara,” carrying its former brand name, and some of the listing photos show signage from a different brand. Because the hotel is still operating, guests are not at risk of being unable to stay, but travelers searching by the current name may struggle to find it, and the signage on arrival may not match the name they booked. In this survey we found several other properties still being sold under their old names after a change of name or operator.

Most Announced Closures Were Reflected

That said, most properties that had announced a closure or temporary closure were not selling post-closure dates on Agoda either. When we checked the 12 properties whose dates could be confirmed through news reports or official announcements for stay dates after closure, Heiseikan Kaiyotei was the only one showing bookable rooms; of the remaining 11, 2 no longer had a property page listed at all. The Kyoto New Hankyu Hotel (京都新阪急ホテル) page carried a notice of the end of operations: January 10, 2027, while the hotel is still open, could be booked, whereas for February 10, after operations end, the room section itself did not appear.

We also looked at properties that have disappeared from Japan’s major booking sites. Of 480 properties with 10 or more rooms that have stopped selling on Japan’s major booking sites but remain listed on Agoda, 166 showed bookable rooms for December 10, 2026. When we checked the operating status of 86 of these through official websites, operator announcements and news reports, 54 were still operating and 8 had changed their name or operator. Information indicating closure was found for 4, and for 20 the status could not be determined from public information. Most properties that have vanished from domestic booking sites appear not to have closed, but simply to have narrowed their sales channels. The one property whose closure could be confirmed from official information and that was still being sold as the old property was the former Hotel Nagoya Castle.

What Properties Should Check — When Closing, Suspending Operations or Rebranding

The results show that, for most properties that announced a closure or temporary closure, Agoda sales had also stopped, while mismatches between announcements and sales persist at individual properties. When a mismatch occurs, those affected first are likely to be the guests who booked and the property forced to deal with them on site. The points that properties deciding to close, suspend operations or rebrand should check can be summarized as follows.

SituationWhat to check
When the closure or temporary-closure dates are setStop all sales for the affected period — not only on booking sites managed through the site controller, but also inventory allocated to travel agencies and wholesale suppliers
After the announcement is publishedSearch for your own property on booking sites, including overseas ones, for dates after closure and confirm it cannot be booked. Check multiple times with different dates
When rebuilding or closingCheck whether a page for the old property remains separately from the new property’s page, and request that the listing be removed
When renaming or changing brandsAsk each booking site to update the property name, photos and brand name, then search under the old name to confirm nothing remains
When a mismatch is foundSave screenshots showing the date and time, and keep a record of correction requests and when they take effect. Decide in advance how to contact guests in case bookings have been made

Summary

Of the 12 properties with publicly announced closure or temporary-closure dates, Heiseikan Kaiyotei was the only one bookable on Agoda for dates after closure, with rooms displayed on 9 of 14 dates within the closure period. The page of the former Hotel Nagoya Castle, which stopped operating in 2020, was selling rooms from the old hotel era while still displaying its closure notice, and several properties had name changes that had not been reflected. Given that most announced closures are reflected in sales, the problem lies less with the system as a whole than with individual properties. That is precisely why properties that decide to close, suspend operations or rebrand should check their own booking screens themselves after making the announcement — the most direct way to protect both guests and the property. On November 2, we also contacted Agoda with questions about the accuracy of information on property pages, and will update this article if we receive a response.
