The 78th Shosoin Exhibition (正倉院展) opened at the Nara National Museum (奈良国立博物館) on Saturday, October 24, 2026, and runs through Monday, November 9 with no closing days. Tracking booking progress at Nara City hotels by stay date shows that the opening Saturday had already reached an estimated OCC (based on OTA-listed inventory) of 76.1% 45 days before the stay date. That was 17.3pt above the pre-exhibition Saturday (October 17) at 58.8%, and the night filled to 95.3% by the day before. Even within the exhibition period, however, the night of Tuesday, November 3 (a national holiday) stood at only 70.6% 15 days out — a dip more than 10pt below the nights on either side. This article reads how stay dates overlapping the exhibition filled, split into weekends, weekdays and holidays, and sets out pricing and inventory moves for the remaining two weeks of the exhibition and the period after it.
Scope: all properties in Nara City, N=62–63 properties (3,335–3,337 rooms), of which business hotels N=17 properties (1,957 rooms). The price metric in this article is the estimated settled ADR (the settled price level estimated from OTA and other sales data, tax-excluded equivalent); occupancy is an estimate based on OTA-listed inventory. Both are defined at the end of the article. Data as of: October 26, 2026.
- — Opening day, Saturday October 24, 2026, stood at an estimated OCC of 76.1% 45 days out. That was 17.3pt above the pre-exhibition Saturday (October 17, 58.8%), but the gap the day before was just 1.2pt. The effect showed up in how early rooms filled, not in the final pickup (all properties in Nara City, N=62 properties / 3,335 rooms).
- — Wednesdays and Thursdays during the exhibition filled earlier than Saturdays. Thursday, October 29 was at 90.7% 45 days out and 93.1% 30 days out, then stayed nearly flat to 94.8% 4 days out.
- — The night of Tuesday, November 3 (holiday) was at 70.6% 15 days out, more than 10pt below the night before (81.4%) and the night after (83.4%) — the only dip during the exhibition.
- — There is a second demand peak after the exhibition. Saturday, November 21 was at 96.3% 30 days out, higher than any Saturday during the exhibition, and in 2025 November (¥12,300) was the year’s highest month for business-hotel estimated settled ADR.
Opening Saturday — It Started High 45 Days Out, With Half the Room to Grow of the Pre-Exhibition Saturday
First, compare the booking curve for opening day, Saturday October 24, with October 17, the Saturday one week before the Shosoin Exhibition began. According to the Nara National Museum’s official guide, this year’s exhibition displays 60 treasures (11 of them shown for the first time), and admission is in principle by advance-reservation, date-and-time-specified tickets. Visitors have to fix their visit date early, which makes it structurally likely that accommodation bookings are also brought forward.
In fact, estimated OCC across all properties (N=62 properties / 3,335 rooms) for October 24 moved from 76.1% 45 days out → 79.9% 30 days out → 90.9% 15 days out → 95.3% the day before. By contrast, the pre-exhibition October 17 went 58.8% → 68.0% → 77.7% → 94.1%: the gap was 17.3pt at 45 days out and still 11.9pt at 30 days out, but it narrowed to 1.2pt the day before. Opening day added only 19.2pt between 45 days out and the day before, while October 17 built up 35.3pt. The event’s effect can be read as showing up less in how full the night finally got and more in how early it filled.
Among business hotels (N=17 properties / 1,957 rooms), the pattern is even clearer. October 24 went from 70.1% 45 days out to 94.6% the day before, and October 17 from 48.0% to 96.9%. The gap at 45 days out widened to 22.1pt, yet by the day before the pre-exhibition Saturday was actually higher. Comparing only the final weekend pickup, opening day of the Shosoin Exhibition looks “no different from an ordinary Saturday.” Only by comparing booking progress at fixed points before the stay date does the forward shift in demand become visible.

Saturday, October 31, the second Saturday of the exhibition, was even stronger: 79.3% 45 days out → 87.2% 30 days out → 94.4% 15 days out, above opening day at every checkpoint, reaching 95.5% 6 days out. The third Saturday, November 7, however, was at 85.1% 13 days out — lower than October 24 (90.7%) and October 31 (94.7%) at the same 13-day lead time, and sitting midway toward the pre-exhibition October 17 (78.5%). The weekend demand lift appears to be weakening as the exhibition moves into its second half.
Weekdays During the Exhibition — Wednesdays and Thursdays Filled Earlier Than Saturdays
Next, the weekdays that overlap the exhibition. What stands out is that Wednesday and Thursday nights reached high levels earlier than Saturdays. Thursday, October 29 was at 90.7% 45 days out and Wednesday, October 28 at 86.7%, well above opening day (76.1%) at the same 45-day point. The following week repeated the pattern, with Thursday, November 5 at 89.3% and Friday, November 6 at 87.8% 45 days out.
Setting pre-exhibition weekdays alongside shows the size of the gap. Tuesday October 13 and Wednesday October 14 were at 54.0% and 59.7% 45 days out, and still only 70.9% and 74.3% 15 days out. During the exhibition, Tuesday October 27 through Thursday October 29 reached 89.3%, 92.2% and 93.9% 15 days out — weekday levels a full step above the pre-exhibition period. Weekday demand, however, can combine several drivers such as group tours and business travel, so this uplift cannot all be attributed to the exhibition. What this article can confirm is only the fact that weekday nights overlapping the exhibition filled as early as, or earlier than, weekends. How autumn school trips support weekday rate levels is examined in Autumn School Trips: Weekday Rate Floors in 5 Areas.
Another feature is how flat the weekday curves are. October 29 moved only 1.7pt, from 93.1% 30 days out to 94.8% 4 days out, and November 5 was nearly flat at 92.1% 30 days out → 92.9% 11 days out. This means most of the listed inventory had already been absorbed by 30 days out, leaving very few additional rooms to capture in the remaining sales window.

The Night of Tuesday, November 3 (Holiday) — The Only Dip During the Exhibition
The one night clearly left behind during the exhibition is Tuesday, November 3, Culture Day (文化の日). Estimated OCC across all properties went 61.9% 45 days out → 67.0% 30 days out → 70.6% 15 days out → 73.7% 9 days out, lower than any other stay date in the exhibition period. At 15 days out it was 10.8pt below the night before (Monday, November 2, 81.4%) and 12.8pt below the night after (Wednesday, November 4, 83.4%). Business hotels also stalled at 70.5% 9 days out, with the same gap to the surrounding nights.
The calendar is the likely reason. Because November 3 falls on a Tuesday, for travelers taking the four days from Saturday, October 31, the holiday night is the “going-home night,” with a working Wednesday the next morning. Nights just before returning to work are hard to fill, and differ in character from Monday, November 2, which bridges weekend strength into the weekday. The effect of Culture Day falling on a Tuesday is explored through daily rates in seven autumn-foliage areas in Culture Day 2026 Falls Tuesday: Demand Peaks on Holiday Eve. The exhibition’s final day, Monday, November 9, was also at a relatively low 76.9% 15 days out for an exhibition weekday.
It is also worth checking what happens after the exhibition. Tuesday, November 10 was at 72.9% 30 days out, 13.3pt below the 86.2% recorded 30 days out for Tuesday, October 27 during the exhibition. Meanwhile, Saturday, November 21, outside the exhibition, was at 96.3% 30 days out and 97.0% 27 days out — higher than any Saturday during the exhibition. It is the first day of the three-day weekend that includes Monday, November 23 (holiday), and autumn has one more demand peak waiting after the exhibition ends.

Monthly Rate Levels — Last Year, November Was the Highest Month of the Year
For pricing, we look at monthly estimated settled ADR rather than daily figures. Lining up the 2025 final figures for Nara City business hotels (N=23 properties), the highest month of the year was November at ¥12,300, followed by October at ¥11,500. October–November, when the Shosoin Exhibition overlaps with autumn foliage season, was the year’s price peak for business hotels as well.
The most recent finalized month, September 2026, came in at ¥9,100, up 3.9% from ¥8,700 a year earlier. Comparing January–September 2026 with the same months of the prior year, April rose +10.7% while June (−7.0%) and July (−6.9%) came in lower, so rates have not moved in one direction throughout the year. October and November are not yet finalized, and estimates based on current sales may still change, so a simple comparison with last year’s final figures should wait until month-end (for daily listed rates during the exhibition, see Shosoin Exhibition 2026: Nara Weekday Rates +32% During 17-Day Run).

For Revenue Managers Running Hotels in Nara City — Implications and Action Plan for the Rest of the Shosoin Exhibition and Beyond
1. Review the opening weekend by “where you stood 45 days out.” Opening Saturday finished at 95.3% the day before, barely different from the pre-exhibition Saturday (94.1%). The difference appeared at 45 days out (76.1% vs 58.8%) and 30 days out (79.9% vs 68.0%). In your own property review, look beyond final occupancy and check whether you were ahead of or behind the market at 45 and 30 days out; that informs when to start raising rates next year.
2. Wednesdays and Thursdays during the exhibition were close to sold out by 30 days out. October 29 (Thursday) barely moved, from 93.1% 30 days out to 94.8% 4 days out. Few additional rooms can be won by last-minute discounting in this situation, so for the same weekdays next year, a design that locks in rates before the 30-day mark looks more suitable.
3. The night of November 3 (Tuesday, holiday) needs separate treatment even within the exhibition. Estimated OCC 15 days out was 70.6%, well below the night before (81.4%) and the night after (83.4%). Rather than keeping the same pricing as weekends, there is room to consider pairing it with the November 2 stay or selling it on a multi-night basis.
4. In the late exhibition and after it, the demand peak shifts. Saturday, November 7 was at 85.1% 13 days out, with the weekend lift weakening, while the post-exhibition Saturday, November 21 had reached 96.3% 30 days out. Instead of treating only the Shosoin Exhibition period as special, reposition autumn’s demand peaks on the pricing calendar as two: “weekdays during the exhibition” and “the late-November three-day weekend.”
| Timing | Action | Decision trigger (figures in this article) | Aim |
|---|---|---|---|
| This week | Carve out remaining November 3 (Tuesday, holiday) inventory and sell it as two-night stays combined with November 2, or for longer stays | If your November 3 has not reached the market’s 73.7% at 9 days out | Connect the exhibition’s dip night to demand from the night before |
| This week | Hold rates on remaining rooms for November 5 (Thursday) and 6 (Friday); do not rush to discount | If the market has been flat in the 92% range since 30 days out and your property is at a similar level | Protect the rate on nights that are already full |
| Through the end of the exhibition | Check pickup for November 7 (Saturday) and 9 (Monday) daily; for weak nights, consider messaging that pairs the stay with viewing on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, when the museum closes later | If November 7 at 85.1% 13 days out and November 9 at 76.9% 15 days out are below the same weekdays in the first half of the exhibition | Offset the slowdown in demand in the second half of the exhibition |
| After the exhibition | Revisit pricing for the three-day weekend from Saturday, November 21 on a stronger assumption than exhibition Saturdays | If the market is at 96.3% 30 days out — higher than any exhibition Saturday — while your rates remain at exhibition-Saturday levels | Do not miss autumn’s second peak |
| For next year’s exhibition | Lock in rates for Wednesdays and Thursdays overlapping the exhibition before 45 days out | This year, October 29 tracked 90.7% at 45 days out and 93.1% at 30 days out | Secure rates early on weekdays that fill ahead of time |
| For next year’s exhibition | Review opening-weekend pricing decisions by the gap to the market at 45 and 30 days out, not by final occupancy | This year, opening day was 17.3pt above the pre-exhibition Saturday at 45 days out, with a 1.2pt gap the day before | Build the case for starting rate increases earlier |
Summary — Read Shosoin Exhibition Demand by “Speed” and “Calendar”
To sum up, Nara City accommodation demand overlapping the 2026 Shosoin Exhibition can be read with three yardsticks. First, the event’s effect shows up in earlier booking, not in final pickup: opening Saturday was 17.3pt above the pre-exhibition Saturday 45 days out, but only 1.2pt ahead the day before. Second, weekdays during the exhibition fill as early as or earlier than weekends: Thursday, October 29 reached 90.7% 45 days out and barely moved after 30 days out. Third, there are nights where the calendar cancels out the exhibition’s effect: Tuesday, November 3 (holiday) was at 70.6% 15 days out, more than 10pt below the nights on either side.
On a monthly basis, too, Nara City business hotels recorded their highest estimated settled ADR of the year in November last year. How hotels sell the remaining two weeks of the exhibition and the late-November three-day weekend that follows will shape autumn revenue.
About the Data
| Estimated OCC definition | Occupancy based on OTA-listed inventory = 100 − 100 × OTA-listed remaining rooms ÷ total rooms. Covers a fixed cohort of properties that list at least 30% of their total rooms on OTAs (the same set of properties for each stay date; N= in the text is that number of properties). It is an estimate based on how inventory sold on OTAs is absorbed and differs in definition from actual room occupancy (rooms not listed are counted as absorbed, so it reads higher). |
| Booking curve | Based on observations from 45 days before the stay date to the latest available. Stay dates already past, such as October 24 and 25, use observations through the day before; later stay dates use observations through October 25. |
| Estimated settled ADR definition | Settled price level (tax-excluded equivalent) estimated from OTA and other sales data (lowest-plan level × property-type factor, multi-channel ensemble). Past months are final figures; current and future months are estimates based on current sales. Median error of 6.6% against published operating results. The chart in this article shows final figures only (January 2025–September 2026). |
| Coverage N= | Estimated OCC: all properties in Nara City N=62–63 properties (3,335–3,337 rooms, stay dates during the exhibition); the October 13–17 stay dates used for comparison are N=62–63 properties (3,335–3,336 rooms). Business hotels N=17 properties (1,957 rooms). Estimated settled ADR: Nara City business hotels N=23–24 properties (varies by month). |

■ Data sources
MetroEngines Research OTA-listed inventory and price data by stay date (fixed cohorts of all properties and of business hotels in Nara City), and monthly final figures for estimated settled ADR. Shosoin Exhibition dates, opening hours and number of exhibits from the Nara National Museum’s official guide.
■ Calculation assumptions
No revenue estimates were made. Estimated OCC compares fixed checkpoints — 45, 30 and 15 days out and the latest — using the same set of properties for each stay date; weekend, weekday and holiday classifications are based on the day of the week of the stay date. Estimated settled ADR uses finalized months only (January 2025–September 2026); October and November estimates were not used for comparison.
■ Limitations and caveats
Estimated OCC is based on OTA-listed inventory and therefore reads higher than actual room occupancy. The weekday uplift during the exhibition may include factors other than the exhibition, such as group tours and business travel, so it cannot all be attributed to the Shosoin Exhibition. Stay dates from October 26 onward reflect observations through October 25, and final pickup may still change.
