The information media “Sublogg,” operated by Review Co., Ltd. , conducted a survey in July 2024 among Japanese individuals aged 20 and older, asking which Japanese islands they would most like to visit. The survey was conducted online, with 100 participants in total, consisting of 60 women and 40 men.

The survey revealed that “Yakushima” was the top choice, with many respondents expressing a strong desire to visit the island at least once. Those who selected “Yakushima” frequently mentioned the island’s majestic natural scenery, including the famous Jomon Sugi and Yakusugi cedar trees, as a major draw. For example, a woman in her 30s expressed high expectations for a trip to see the Yakusugi trees, while a man in his 40s shared his desire to experience the power of nature firsthand. A man in his 30s mentioned that while bad weather had previously forced him to cancel his visit, he is determined to try again. These comments highlight how Yakushima’s magnificent natural environment captivates many people.

The second most popular destination was “Ishigaki Island.” Respondents praised Ishigaki Island for its beautiful beaches and natural landscapes, emphasizing its appeal as a resort destination. A man in his 20s noted that Ishigaki is an ideal spot for those seeking a resort experience, while a woman in her 30s appreciated the combination of natural beauty and shopping opportunities. Another woman in her 30s, who loves Okinawa, expressed her anticipation of seeing Ishigaki Island’s stunning sea in person. This suggests that Ishigaki Island is a highly regarded destination, particularly popular among families and those looking for a resort getaway.

Ranked third was the “Ogasawara Islands.” The islands’ remoteness, with no airport access, adds to their allure, making them seem fresh and exciting to explore. A man in his 40s expressed that the difficulty of visiting the islands made them even more intriguing, while a man in his 30s shared his desire to experience the islands’ simple, isolated atmosphere. Another man in his 20s showed interest, noting that although the islands are part of Tokyo, he had never visited them. The Ogasawara Islands are popular as an adventurous destination, where the challenge of getting there adds to their charm.

The fourth spot was taken by “Miyako Island.” Opinions about Miyako Island were influenced by past enjoyable experiences in Ishigaki Island and the desire to explore the differences from Okinawa’s main island. A woman in her 20s found Miyako Island attractive based on her previous travel experience to Ishigaki Island, while another woman in her 20s, who enjoys Okinawa’s laid-back atmosphere, expressed her wish to visit Miyako Island next. A woman in her 40s, captivated by the beautiful sea she saw on TV, also shared her desire to visit. Miyako Island’s stunning natural environment clearly draws the interest of many people.

Ranked fifth was “Shodoshima.” Respondents often highlighted Shodoshima’s calm Seto Inland Sea climate, the island’s specialties such as olives, and attractions like Angel Road. A woman in her 40s, who lives relatively close to the island, expressed a sense of familiarity, while a woman in her 30s mentioned her desire to spend leisurely time on the island. Another woman in her 40s shared her wish to visit after hearing positive feedback from friends who had traveled there. Shodoshima’s moderate distance and serene natural environment appeal to those seeking a peaceful escape.

Ranked sixth was “Hachijojima.” Hachijojima gained attention as the setting for the movie version of “Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine.” A woman in her 30s expressed her desire to experience the world of Conan firsthand by visiting Hachijojima.

Additionally, “Hashima (Gunkanjima)” and “Taketomi Island” were also mentioned as desirable destinations. Respondents, including a woman in her 40s and a man in his 50s, highlighted their interest in Gunkanjima’s ruins and its status as a World Heritage site, while those interested in Taketomi Island expressed their desire to enjoy its natural beauty and stunning beaches. These islands are recognized as unique and attractive tourist destinations.

In this survey, 38.0% of respondents selected “Yakushima,” with many expressing a strong desire to see Yakushima’s famous cedar trees at least once. Yakushima’s cedar trees are widely recognized as a place where visitors can truly appreciate the grandeur of nature. This survey confirmed Yakushima’s high popularity as a travel destination. For those who want to fully enjoy the island’s natural beauty, these insights should prove valuable.
