The digital travel platform “Agoda“, operated by Agoda Company Pte. Ltd., announced that a flexible, experience-focused travel style is spreading among Japan’s Gen Z. In contrast to traditional long-vacation-style trips, there is a growing tendency to prioritize accessibility and new discoveries, a trend consistent with travel patterns observed among young people across Asia.
The survey was conducted as part of the “2026 Travel Outlook Report,” targeting travelers in nine Asian countries and regions. Among Japan’s Gen Z, short trips that are easy to plan and repeat are preferred. Approximately 67% plan trips lasting one to three days, and about 58% plan to travel one to six times per year. Travel destinations are also predominantly domestic, with around 75% planning mainly domestic trips.

The top travel purposes cited were relaxation (50%), food experiences (42%), and cultural experiences (33%). Japan’s Gen Z tends to prioritize experiences over destinations themselves, with a notably high interest in food experiences. Compared to Asia overall, the proportion of trips with food as a primary purpose is higher, making it an important factor in destination selection.

In terms of travel style, traveling with a partner and solo travel were each the most common at 33%, followed by trips with friends at 25%, reflecting a mix of independent activity and shared experiences. This tendency to enjoy multiple short trips is positioned as “Bite-sized travel.” The survey was conducted in October 2025 across nine Asian countries and regions, with a total of 3,353 respondents.
