Top 30 Ski-Slope Hotels by Reviews: Naeba Prince Leads, Kutchan ¥62k
Posted: 2026.11.08Ahead of the ski season, we tallied the properties that guests praise in their reviews for being “close to the ski resort” or having “the slopes right outside.” Counting, property by property, the reviews extracted by HotelBank Editorial Team NLP analysis that speak favorably about proximity to the slopes or a ski resort, the top spot goes to Naeba Prince Hotel (苗場プリンスホテル, Yuzawa, Niigata) with 382 mentions, and Hokkaido accounts for 13 of the top 30 properties. This article lays out who made the top 30 and how they are distributed by prefecture, and identifies two distinct patterns: properties where over 40% of reviews mention the slopes, and properties that rank high on sheer mention volume. We also line up the winter (December 2025–February 2026) estimated settled ADR of the municipalities where these properties are located, to see what winter room rates look like in towns that cluster ski-in/ski-out style lodging.

Snow-View Onsen Ranking 2026: Top 3 Inns, 12 Prefectures & Winter ADR
Posted: 2026.11.07Snow-view open-air baths are among the winter lodging experiences guests are most likely to write about. The HotelBank Editorial Team used guest reviews compiled by MetroEngines Research to calculate the share of reviews that speak positively about the open-air bath (the mention rate) over the 24 months from November 2024 to October 2026, covering properties in 12 snow-country prefectures (Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Akita, Yamagata, Fukushima, Niigata, Toyama, Ishikawa, Nagano, Gifu and Gunma). Among properties with at least 100 reviews, we compared the top 100 in each prefecture by number of mentions (or all of them where a prefecture has fewer than 100). In Fukushima, 68 of the 100 reach the level where at least 1 in 10 reviews praises the open-air bath, as do 65 in Nagano and 61 in Hokkaido. The leading properties have mention rates of 45.9% at Koganezaki Furofushi Onsen (黄金崎不老ふ死温泉) in Aomori, 45.3% at Obokoso (おぼこ荘) in Hokkaido and 45.0% at Hishino Onsen Tokiwakan (菱野温泉 常盤館) in Nagano, meaning nearly half of their reviews touch on the open-air bath. This article organizes the review metric by prefecture and by property, overlays the estimated settled ADR for January-February 2026 and ryokan room occupancy in the hot spring...

English Staff Reviews: 43 of Top 100 in Tokyo; Osaka Tops Multilingual
Posted: 2026.11.07We used NLP to analyze guest reviews from the past 24 months and counted, hotel by hotel, two kinds of mentions: English support ("the staff helped us in English") and multilingual support ("the staff could assist in several languages, such as Chinese and Korean"). Taking the top 100 properties by mention count from among those with at least 100 reviews, the English-support top 100 cluster in urban markets — Tokyo 43, Kyoto 16, Osaka 13 — while the multilingual top 100 lean toward markets with a high share of Korean- and Chinese-language reviews — Osaka 36, Fukuoka 16, Okinawa 14. This article confirms the difference between the two distributions using the language mix of reviews, checks the type of properties at the top by room count, and then — against the backdrop of foreign employment in the accommodation industry (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, "Employment Status of Foreign Workers") and the intake ceiling for the Specified Skilled Worker "Accommodation" category — considers when to staff multilingual employees and how to divide roles between people and translation tools.

In-Room Dining 584 Ryokan vs Private Dining 359: Only 8% Offer Both
Posted: 2026.11.05Ryokan dinners are usually discussed in terms of what is served: kaiseki courses, wagyu, crab, buffets. Comparisons built around the food itself are plentiful, but where it is served — carried to the guest room as in-room dining (heyashoku), or in a private dining room away from other guests — has never been organized in numbers. When the HotelBank Editorial Team analyzed 449,991 guest reviews from the past 24 months (874 properties, excluding business and city hotels), in-room dining was mentioned favorably at 584 inns and private dining rooms at 359, while only 69 inns (7.9%) drew mentions of both formats. This article organizes the dinner service format along three axes — prefecture, property size and price band — and reads it alongside the operational constraint of serving staff.

Closed Ryokan Still Bookable on Agoda: 12 Japan Closures Checked
Posted: 2026.11.02Heiseikan Kaiyotei (平成館 海羊亭), a ryokan in Hakodate's Yunokawa Onsen, has announced on its official website that it will close temporarily for stays from November 15, 2026 through April 15, 2027[1]. Yet on Agoda, as of November 2, dates within the closure period showed a "Book now!" button and could be booked. On the Agoda page of the former Hotel Nagoya Castle (ホテル ナゴヤ キャッスル) — which stopped operating in 2020 next to Nagoya Castle, with a different new hotel since opened on the site — rooms that appear to date from the old hotel were also on sale. On the other hand, of the 12 properties whose closure or temporary-closure dates have been made public, 11 were not selling dates after closure on Agoda either. The HotelBank Editorial Team checked each closure announcement against Agoda's booking screens, one property at a time.

Top 20 Hotels for Local Breakfasts in Japan: Median ¥1,500 Add-On
Posted: 2026.11.02How much of the local cuisine actually makes it onto the breakfast table when you travel? When the HotelBank Editorial Team tallied guest reviews from the most recent 24 months (November 2024 to October 2026), the hotels where local breakfasts come up most often were concentrated in prefectural capitals in Tohoku and Hokuriku and in regional hub cities. At the top, Hotel Hokke Club Kagoshima (ホテル法華クラブ鹿児島), 15.07% of reviews (181) mention regional breakfast dishes such as keihan (chicken rice) and Satsuma-jiru. This article presents the Top 20 hotels whose breakfasts are praised for local cuisine, and explains the pattern through the dish names that appear in reviews and the price side — how much a breakfast-included plan adds.

361 Crab Inns by Reviews: Small Inns 38%, Kyotango Winter ADR 2.3x
Posted: 2026.10.30The snow crab (zuwaigani) season opens on November 6 every year. In 2026 that date falls on a Friday, so the first weekend on which the season's first crab reaches inn dinner tables will be November 7–8. The HotelBank Editorial Team tallied guest reviews from the past 24 months across eight prefectures — Hyogo, Kyoto, Fukui, Tottori, Hokkaido, Niigata, Ishikawa and Shimane — and found 361 inns where dinner crab is mentioned positively in 10 or more reviews. At 135 of them, at least one in five reviews mentions crab. The mention rate is tightly linked to inn size: at inns with 10 rooms or fewer, 37.9% of reviews talk about crab, compared with only 4.0% at properties with 101 rooms or more. This article counts, by prefecture and by municipality, the inns where crab is the product, and then uses finalized months to measure how many times higher the estimated settled ADR in those clusters is in winter compared with September.

Bedding Reviews: Sleep Comfort Moves Ratings 0.2 Pts, Pillows Don’t
Posted: 2026.10.24Pillows and bedding are the core product of a hotel, a place people go to sleep, yet nobody has put numbers on how often guests mention them in reviews or how much they move ratings. This article covers 4,121,275 guest reviews compiled by the HotelBank Editorial Team (4,687 properties, the 24 months from October 2024 to October 2026). We extracted four semantic tags (“pillow,” “bedding cleanliness,” “sleep comfort” and “renovated”) and looked in turn at how mention rates are spread across Japan, how they relate to review scores and estimated settled ADR, and how they overlap with renovation. We also collected market prices and useful lives for mattresses and pillows, and converted per-room replacement Capex into a cost per room-night. In short: pillows come up in only 0.4 of every 100 reviews, and their mention rate has almost no correlation with review scores. The share of negative “sleep comfort” mentions, however, goes with a gap of about 0.2 points in overall rating at every price tier.

Crab Season 2026 Opens Nov 6: 613 Inns, Rates Up to 3.6x in Echizen
Posted: 2026.10.13Crab season 2026 opens on Friday, November 6, when snow crab (zuwaigani) fishing begins simultaneously along the Sea of Japan coast in Fukui, Ishikawa, Kyoto, Hyogo, Tottori and neighboring prefectures. The HotelBank Editorial Team analyzed guest reviews from the past 24 months and found 613 properties across 45 prefectures where crab at dinner is mentioned repeatedly. The six prefectures that land Echizen-gani, Kano-gani and Matsuba-gani account for 311 of them (50.7%), while the remaining half extends to Hokkaido, Kyushu and hot-spring towns in the Kanto region. This article looks in turn at the geography of properties where crab is talked about, how far the settled ADR estimate in the producing areas steps up once the season opens, and how bookings for the opening weekend are pacing at this point.

Free-Flowing Onsen by Prefecture 2026: 1,254 Inns, 426 Under-Marketed
Posted: 2026.10.05How much do guests actually talk about free-flowing hot spring baths (gensen kakenagashi — spring water fed straight into the tub and allowed to overflow rather than being recirculated)? The HotelBank Editorial Team tallied guest reviews across all 47 prefectures for the most recent 24 months and found 1,254 properties where kakenagashi was mentioned favorably in 10 or more reviews, for a total of 28,913 mentions. The largest mention count nationwide belongs to Fukui Hotel (ふく井ホテル) in Obihiro, Hokkaido, with 274 mentions; the highest mention rates (share of all of a property's reviews) are at Miyuki Onsen (深雪温泉) in Isawa, Yamanashi (36.0%) and Yamagatakan (山県館) at Kawaura Onsen (30.8%). For operators, two further points matter. First, the level of estimated settled ADR differs according to what kakenagashi is mentioned together with. Ryokan where it appears in the same review as the open-air bath sit at 1.49x their prefecture's ryokan benchmark, while ryokan where it is paired only with water quality sit at 0.95x. Second, there are 426 properties where kakenagashi is mentioned in 10 or more reviews yet the mention rate stays below 5%. Most are mid-sized to large properties with many rooms: they have free-flowing baths, but those baths...
