Golden Week 2027 in Japan: 5 Days May 1-5, Hotel Rates Rise Apr 30

Travel Styles

Japan’s Golden Week 2027 is, on the calendar alone, a five-day break from Saturday, May 1 to Wednesday, May 5. There are four national holidays: Thursday, April 29 (Showa Day), Monday, May 3 (Constitution Memorial Day), Tuesday, May 4 (Greenery Day) and Wednesday, May 5 (Children’s Day). Friday, April 30 is the only working day caught in between. Take that one day off and you get a seven-day break from April 29 to May 5; also take Thursday, May 6 and Friday, May 7 off and it becomes an eleven-day break from April 29 to Sunday, May 9. No holiday falls on a Sunday, so there is no substitute holiday (based on the 2027 national holidays published by Japan’s Cabinet Office).

For hotel prices, the biggest difference from 2026 is that the core of the holiday now starts on a Saturday. In 2026 the five-day break ran from Saturday, May 2 to Wednesday, May 6, and two working days — Thursday, April 30 and Friday, May 1 — formed the valley before it. In 2027 the valley is a single day, Friday, April 30. Listed prices by stay date in 2026 show a first step up on the Friday night before the break and a jump on the Saturday night. If the same shape simply moves one day earlier, in 2027 the night of Friday, April 30 is the first step and the night of Saturday, May 1 is the first peak. Below, we use measured data from Golden Week 2026 (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Okinawa, Hokkaido) to set out the expensive nights, the cheap nights, and when to make your booking.

About the data in this article
• “Listed price” here means the rate shown for rooms on sale at online travel agencies (two guests in one room, per room, tax included, all plans), averaged by area. It differs from actual transaction prices and from what a guest ends up paying.
• Table 1 and Figure 2 show values as of seven days before each stay date. Table 2 shows monthly averages (area median of each property’s daily average, then averaged over the month).
• Estimated occupancy (OCC) = rooms sold as a share of total rooms in the area (an estimate based on inventory sold through online travel agencies). It is an area-level figure, not the occupancy of any individual property.
• Prices are per-room rates for two guests sharing one room (tax included). Source: HotelBank Editorial Team research
Key Takeaways
  • — Five days off on the calendar alone: Saturday, May 1 to Wednesday, May 5, 2027. No holiday falls on a Sunday, so there is no substitute holiday.
  • — One day of leave makes seven days, three make eleven: take Friday, April 30 off for April 29 to May 5; also take Thursday, May 6 and Friday, May 7 off to stretch it to Sunday, May 9.
  • — The Golden Week 2026 peak was 1.55x to 1.96x the night of April 29 (a holiday): Tokyo 1.96x, Osaka 1.88x, Kyoto 1.73x, Okinawa 1.57x, Hokkaido 1.55x (listed prices as of seven days before each stay date, two guests in one room, tax included).
  • — For 2027, we expect the night of Friday, April 30 to be the first step and the night of Saturday, May 1 the first peak. In 2026, the Friday night before the break rose 21% in Tokyo and 19% in Okinawa.
  • — If price comes first, stay on the night of Thursday, April 29 (a holiday) or Wednesday, May 5. If you want the peak nights, shortlist and hold a room early in the new year and lock it in no later than one month ahead.

Figure 1: Calendar for April 24 to May 9, 2027. Red = national holidays and Sundays, blue = Saturdays, yellow = weekdays that link the break together if taken off. Holidays are based on the Cabinet Office’s published list of national holidays.

There are three ways to build the break.

  • Five days (no leave): Saturday, May 1 to Wednesday, May 5. Thursday, April 29 (a holiday) can be used as a stand-alone day off
  • Seven days (one day of leave): take Friday, April 30 off for Thursday, April 29 to Wednesday, May 5
  • Eleven days (three days of leave): take Friday, April 30, Thursday, May 6 and Friday, May 7 off for Thursday, April 29 to Sunday, May 9

In 2026 the five-day break ran from Saturday, May 2 to Wednesday, May 6, with two working days between Wednesday, April 29 (a holiday) and the break. In 2027 that gap shrinks to one working day, so a seven-day break costs only one day of leave. For families with school-age children, Friday, April 30 is a school day, so the realistic way to add an early night is to leave on Friday after school.

When Bookings Start to Move — A Rule of Thumb and 2026 Sellout Timing

When rooms go on sale differs by property and booking site, but as a rule of thumb many properties accept bookings six months to a year ahead. For Golden Week 2027, it is safe to assume that booking pages will be open at many properties from autumn to winter 2026, and that availability in popular areas (Okinawa, Kyoto, highland resorts and the like) starts to thin out from the new year. Nothing here is certain, but a sensible approach is to hold a candidate if it is still open early in the new year, then compare again in spring.

The basis for this is sellout timing during Golden Week 2026. In our measurement of inventory depletion by price band, covering 2,804 business hotels and city hotels nationwide, the day on which remaining rooms for the peak date (the night of May 3, 2026) first hit zero was a median of 18 days ahead in the ¥6,000–8,000 per night band and 13 days ahead in the ¥8,000–10,000 band. Estimated nationwide occupancy was 97.2% on May 3 and 95.6% on May 4. In other words, the more affordable the price band, the sooner the window closes — two to three weeks ahead.

The question “will it get cheaper if I wait until the last minute?” needs more care. Tracking prices by lead time for Golden Week 2026 (nights of May 3–5), the average listed price of remaining rooms fell by about 16% in Osaka and about 13% in Okinawa and Hokkaido between 14 days ahead and the day itself, but estimated occupancy kept climbing to 93–96% over the same period. What got cheaper was the average, not the choice of rooms left: rooms with good views and connecting rooms disappear first, and the average of whatever stock remains at the end looks lower. If you are aiming for the property that will be the highlight of your holiday, it is worth securing it before the average moves.

How Prices Moved in Golden Week 2026 — Measured by Stay Date

Three patterns are common to all five areas.

  • The peak is the Saturday night that opens the break or the Sunday night after it. Tokyo and Okinawa peaked on the night of Saturday, May 2; Kyoto, Hokkaido and Osaka peaked on the night of Sunday, May 3. Compared with the night of April 29 (a holiday), the peak was 1.96x in Tokyo, 1.88x in Osaka, 1.73x in Kyoto, 1.57x in Okinawa and 1.55x in Hokkaido.
  • Prices step up on the Friday night before the break (May 1). From the night of Thursday, April 30 to the night of Friday, May 1: Tokyo +21%, Osaka +13%, Kyoto +12%, Okinawa +19%, Hokkaido +14%. The “step” from weekday prices to peak prices sits on the Friday night.
  • Prices fall day by day in the second half of the break. In Tokyo, the night of Monday, May 4 (a holiday) was 21% below the peak, the night of Tuesday, May 5 (a holiday) was 44% below, and the final night, Wednesday, May 6 (a substitute holiday), was at or below April weekday levels. A night followed by a working day returns to normal prices even when it is a holiday.

On a monthly average, this peak is hard to see. As Table 2 shows, Tokyo and Kyoto were more expensive in April (cherry blossom season) than in May, and the May average is pulled down by the three weeks after Golden Week. It is not the month that goes up, but four to five nights of the break, and whether you avoid them decides what you pay.

In 2027, the Night of Friday, April 30 Is the First Step and Saturday, May 1 the First Peak

Mapping the 2026 pattern onto the 2027 days of the week gives the following.

Table 3: Golden Week 2026 price movements mapped onto the 2027 days of the week (our outlook)
Role in 2026 2026 2027 Price outlook
Holiday night before the break Apr 29 (Wed) Apr 29 (Thu) Around weekday levels. The easiest valley night to target
Weekday night in the valley Apr 30 (Thu), May 1 (Fri) Apr 30 (Fri) Only one day in 2027. As a Friday, it becomes the step up
First night of the break (Sat) May 2 (Sat) May 1 (Sat) The first peak. The highest night in Tokyo- and Okinawa-type areas
Second night (Sun) May 3 (Sun) May 2 (Sun) The highest night in Kyoto- and Hokkaido-type areas
Third and fourth nights May 4 (Mon), May 5 (Tue) May 3 (Mon), May 4 (Tue) Falls in stages from the peak
Final night (working day next) May 6 (Wed) May 5 (Wed) The cheapest night of the break. Even a holiday reverts if the next day is a working day

Table 3: The editorial team’s outlook, mapping price movements by stay date in Golden Week 2026 (Table 1) onto the 2027 days of the week. Actual prices vary by property, area and booking timing.

There are two key points. First, in 2027 the valley shrinks to two nights: Thursday, April 29 (a holiday) and Friday, April 30. In 2026 there were two working days, which gave more valley options; in 2027, whether you can secure these two nights is what separates the prices. For families thinking of a highland or lakeside resort during the valley, Five Highland and Lakeside Resorts for the Golden Week 2027 Valley (nights of April 29 and 30) (in Japanese) lists specific properties and their price gap against the peak nights.

Second, the night of Wednesday, May 5 is likely to be “a cheap night even though it is a holiday”. Just as with the night of Wednesday, May 6, 2026 (a substitute holiday), a night followed by a working day drops out of holiday pricing. Using the back end of the break (leave on May 4, stay the night of May 5, return on May 6) is a choice that tends to avoid both the crowds and the prices.

How to Stay for Less — Three Decisions

  • Choose the night: if price comes first, stay on the night of Thursday, April 29 (a holiday) or Wednesday, May 5. Moving just one night off the peak (the nights of May 1 and 2) changes what you pay by 40–50% in Tokyo and 30–40% in Kyoto and Okinawa, based on 2026 measurements.
  • Choose the timing: for the peak nights of the break, 2026 measurements show that the more affordable the price band, the earlier rooms ran out — two to three weeks ahead. If you want the peak nights, shortlist and hold a room early in the new year and lock it in no later than one month ahead. Last-minute price drops are “the average of the stock left over” and come as a trade-off against choice.
  • Choose the area: the ratio between peak and valley was large in Tokyo and Osaka (about 1.9x) and comparatively gentle in Okinawa and Hokkaido (about 1.6x). City business hotels move sharply with the day of the week, while resorts tend to stay flat at a high level. For those who can wait until the weekdays after Golden Week, hot spring towns in fresh greenery offer some of the best conditions of the year (Five Small Onsen Ryokan in Hakone and Yugawara for After Golden Week, in Japanese). How far prices fall on weekdays after Golden Week is tracked with 2026 daily data in Up to 44% OFF After Golden Week | Mid-May Hotel Bottom Pricing Guide 2026.

Where to Look for Specific Properties

For side-by-side comparisons of specific properties, these articles (in Japanese) go into detail.

For travelers who skip the break and head for hot springs in fresh greenery on the weekdays after Golden Week, it introduces five properties with 7 to 18 rooms that accept solo guests year-round: Fukuzumiro (文化財の宿 福住楼; founded 1890, a Registered Tangible Cultural Property), Washintei Hougetsu (和心亭 豊月; on a hill overlooking Lake Ashi, meals in private rooms), Fujiya Ryokan (富士屋旅館), Gora Kansuiro (強羅環翠楼; a 3-minute walk from Gora Station, two private hot spring sources) and Okuyugawara Yui (奥湯河原 結唯; all 7 rooms with an open-air bath with a view).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How many days off is Golden Week 2027 in Japan?

A. On the calendar alone, it is a five-day break from Saturday, May 1 to Wednesday, May 5 (Children’s Day). Taking off Friday, April 30, which sits between Thursday, April 29 (Showa Day) and Saturday, May 1, makes it a seven-day break from April 29 to May 5; also taking Thursday, May 6 and Friday, May 7 off makes it an eleven-day break from April 29 to Sunday, May 9. There is no substitute holiday, because no holiday falls on a Sunday.

Q. When should I book a hotel for Golden Week 2027?

A. The start of sales differs by property and booking site, but as a rule of thumb many properties accept bookings six months to a year ahead. It is safe to assume bookings in popular areas start moving from the new year. In Golden Week 2026 measurements, properties in the ¥6,000–10,000 per night band ran out of rooms for the night of May 3 a median of 13 to 18 days ahead, so for the peak nights of the break you will want to have a room secured at least three weeks ahead.

Q. Is the first half or the second half cheaper?

A. In 2026 measurements, the holiday and weekday nights before the core of the break (nights of April 29 and 30) and the final night of the break (night of May 6) were the cheapest, and the gap to the peak (nights of May 2 and 3) was about 2x in Tokyo. In 2027 the days of the week move one day earlier, so the valley is the nights of Thursday, April 29 (a holiday) and Friday, April 30, and the final night is Wednesday, May 5. If you are choosing on price alone, aim for “the holiday in the first half” or “the final night”.

Methodology and Sources

■ Data source

Listed prices of rooms on sale at online travel agencies (two guests in one room, per room, tax included, all plans) are aggregated for five areas: Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Okinawa and Hokkaido (HotelBank Editorial Team research). The 2027 holidays are based on the Cabinet Office’s published list of national holidays; days of the week were recalculated by the editorial team.

■ Assumptions

Table 1 and Figure 2 show, for each stay date from April 28 to May 6, 2026, the average of rooms on sale seven days ahead. Table 2 is the monthly average of the area median of each property’s daily average. The 2027 outlook in Table 3 is the editorial team’s estimate, mapping 2026 price movements by stay date onto the 2027 days of the week.

■ Limitations and caveats

Listed prices are the prices of rooms on sale and differ from actual transaction prices and from what a guest pays. Rooms already sold out seven days ahead are not included in the averages, and the number of properties observed varies by stay date. Actual prices in 2027 will vary by booking timing, property and plan.
