The Meitetsu New Grand Hotel (名鉄ニューグランドホテル; 6-9 Tsubaki-cho, Nakamura Ward, Nagoya, at the Taiko-dori Exit of Nagoya Station) closed on February 28, 2022. You can no longer stay there. As of late October 2026, no public information confirms what use has since moved into the upper floors of the Nissay Nagoya Station West Building, where the hotel operated. The similarly named Meitetsu Grand Hotel (名鉄グランドホテル) (Meieki 1-chome, on the Sakura-dori Exit side) is a separate property. It is still taking overnight guests as of late October 2026, and Nagoya Railroad (名古屋鉄道) has announced that its closing date is “undecided.”
This article uses public information to lay out the basic facts about the Meitetsu New Grand Hotel and how it came to close, as well as the current status of the Meitetsu Grand Hotel and the Nagoya Station district redevelopment. It then summarizes listed-price benchmarks for staying on the west side of Nagoya Station (Taiko-dori Exit) today, and how to choose a hotel by price tier.

The Meitetsu New Grand Hotel Closed on February 28, 2022
The Meitetsu New Grand Hotel occupied the upper floors of the Nissay Nagoya Station West Building, which stands in front of the Taiko-dori Exit (west exit / Shinkansen exit) of Nagoya Station. It opened on November 15, 1985, and was operated by Meitetsu Grand Hotel Co., Ltd., part of the Meitetsu Group. Its closure was announced in July 2021, and it ended its 36-year history on February 28, 2022. HotelBank reported the closure at the time of the announcement; this article is an update as of late October 2026 that includes what has happened since.

The Building Today: No Public Information on the Upper Floors
The Nissay Nagoya Station West Building is a mixed-use building owned by Nippon Life Insurance. The hotel sat above an electronics retailer on the lower floors, with its banquet halls and guest rooms on the 7th floor and above. As of late October 2026, neither the building owner, the Meitetsu Group nor the media has announced that another hotel or any other use has moved into the upper floors the hotel occupied. Claims that “a new hotel has opened on the former Meitetsu New Grand Hotel site” cannot currently be supported by public information.
The easy mix-up is with the Nagoya Station district redevelopment on the opposite side of the station (Sakura-dori Exit side, Meieki 1-chome). That project was approved on May 26, 2025 by five parties: Nagoya Railroad, Meitetsu Urban Development, Nippon Life Insurance, Kintetsu Railway and Kintetsu Real Estate, and it is in a different location from the Nissay Nagoya Station West Building in Tsubaki-cho. Because Nippon Life is involved in both, search results often blend them together. The electronics retailer on the building’s lower floors has been reported to fall within the Taiko-dori Exit redevelopment (development guidance) area led by the City of Nagoya (Impress, August 2026), but no plan specific to the former hotel space on the upper floors has been announced.
The Meitetsu Grand Hotel and the Meieki Redevelopment (a Separate Hotel You Can Still Book)
The “Meitetsu New Grand Hotel” and the “Meitetsu Grand Hotel” are different hotels. The Meitetsu Grand Hotel is a 241-room hotel that opened in 1967 at Nagoya Station (Meieki 1-chome, Sakura-dori Exit side), and it sits inside the Nagoya Station district redevelopment area. In order of announcement date, events have unfolded as follows.
| Announced | Details |
|---|---|
| May 26, 2025 | Five parties approve the Nagoya Station district redevelopment. Demolition to start in FY2026, new construction in FY2027 and Phase 1 completion in FY2033 |
| 2025 (as of autumn) | Meitetsu Hotel Holdings gives notice that the Meitetsu Grand Hotel will close on March 22, 2026 because of the redevelopment |
| December 12, 2025 | After the planned contractor withdrew from the tender (dated November 26, 2025), Nagoya Railroad changes the schedule and begins re-examining and revising the current plan. Start of demolition, start of new construction and completion all become “undecided.” The Meitetsu Department Store main store closure stays as planned on February 28, 2026, while the Meitetsu Bus Center, Meitetsu Grand Hotel, Sky Parking and others become “undecided” |
| December 26, 2025 | The Meitetsu Grand Hotel announces it will continue its accommodation business beyond the originally planned March 22, 2026 (reported by Tokai TV) |
| February 11, 2026 | The Meitetsu Grand Hotel announces restaurant operations from March 22 onward “in line with partial continuation of operations” (Iris, Kanbaihou and Sky Lounge 203) |

Yodobashi Camera was subsequently reported to have opened in September 2026 |
| Late October 2026 | The Meitetsu Grand Hotel continues to take overnight guests. Its official website carries information on New Year 2027, and stay plans for November and December 2026 are on sale. No new closing date has been announced |

In short, as of late October 2026 the Meitetsu Grand Hotel is “scheduled to close at some point, but bookable for now.” Its November listed price has a median of ¥21,800 per room for two guests (cheapest plan on each stay date, tax included, as of October 31, 2026), which is mid-range given its location directly above Meitetsu Nagoya Station. Nagoya Railroad is reported to plan to present a new redevelopment plan within FY2026, but no formal new schedule has been released yet. The broader redevelopment picture is covered in detail in Nagoya Pipeline 2026-2033: Conrad, Andaz and ADR Flattening.
Staying at Nagoya Station West Today: Nakamura Ward Listed Prices Average ¥37,000 in November 2026
In Nakamura Ward, where the Meitetsu New Grand Hotel stood (covering both sides of Nagoya Station), the November 2026 listed price for 59 hotels averages ¥37,000 per room for two guests, tax included. That is almost level with ¥36,200 in Naka Ward (74 hotels), which includes Sakae and Fushimi. In autumn 2025 Nakamura Ward was about ¥9,000 higher than Naka Ward, but Naka Ward rose sharply from September 2026 and the gap has nearly disappeared. For a hotel on the Sakae/Fushimi side that likewise closed, along with what happened to its site and where to stay instead, see Nagoya Sakae Tokyu REI Hotel Closed 2022: The Site and Where to Stay.

Note, however, that ¥37,000 is an average across all plans, including breakfast plans and higher room grades; the realistic benchmark when booking the cheapest plan is somewhat lower. Taking the cheapest plan on each stay date for 76 hotels in Nakamura Ward, the median for November 2026 is ¥17,800 (interquartile range ¥12,600–¥30,800, as of October 31, 2026). The day-of-week gap is large: the Monday-night median is ¥12,600 versus ¥39,300 for Saturday night, more than three times higher. The most expensive November dates are the 14th (Sat) at ¥44,600, the 28th (Sat) at ¥43,000 and the 27th (Fri) at ¥39,200; the cheapest are the 3rd (Tue, holiday) at ¥11,200, the 2nd (Mon) at ¥12,000 and the 23rd (Mon, holiday) at ¥12,600. Holidays themselves turn out to be surprisingly cheap.
| November 2026, Nakamura Ward (76 hotels) | Cheapest-plan median (per room, 2 guests, tax incl.) |

Three Price Tiers for Staying at Nagoya Station West
Most people looking for a replacement for the Meitetsu New Grand Hotel want “a hotel close to the Shinkansen exit so I can board first thing in the morning.” We grouped hotels on the Taiko-dori Exit (Shinkansen exit) side, plus the Sasashima Live and Sakura-dori Exit sides of the same Nakamura Ward, into three tiers by November 2026 listed price (median of the cheapest plan on each stay date, per room for two guests, tax included, as of October 31, 2026). The order is for choosing by budget, not a ranking.
| Tier | Hotel | Nov median | Monday night | Location / features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business | Toyoko Inn Nagoya-eki Shinkansen-guchi (161 rooms) | ¥12,100 | ¥12,100 | Walking distance from the Shinkansen exit. Listed at ¥12,100 on 21 of 22 listed dates, so prices barely vary by day of week. Breakfast included |
| Business | Comfort Hotel Nagoya Shinkansen-guchi (156 rooms) | ¥16,000 | ¥12,100 | Tsubaki-cho, Shinkansen exit side. Free breakfast. Monday nights drop to the same price as Toyoko Inn |
| Business | Sanco Inn Nagoya Shinkansen-guchi (194 rooms) | ¥17,200 | ¥10,800 | Shinkansen exit side. Monday and Sunday nights drop to ¥10,800–¥11,500 |
| Mid-range | Meitetsu Inn Nagoya Ekimae Shinkansen-guchi (313 rooms) | ¥17,400 | ¥14,100 | Meitetsu Group hotel on the Shinkansen exit side. For those who want to stay on the same Taiko-dori Exit side as the former New Grand |
| Mid-range | Daiwa Roynet Hotel Nagoya Taikodori-guchi (272 rooms) | ¥20,400 | ¥15,200 | Taiko-dori Exit side. 272 rooms, with double-occupancy rooms listed on all 30 days of November, Saturdays included |
| Mid-range | Meitetsu Grand Hotel (241 rooms) | ¥21,800 | ¥15,800 | Sakura-dori Exit side, directly above Meitetsu Nagoya Station. Inside the redevelopment area but still bookable |
| Upscale | Strings Hotel Nagoya (126 rooms) | ¥26,000 | ¥23,200 | Sasashima Live (walkable, south of the Taiko-dori Exit). Settles in the ¥23,000 range Monday–Wednesday |
| Upscale | Nagoya Prince Hotel Sky Tower (170 rooms) | ¥43,800 | ¥33,700 | Upper floors of Sasashima Live. Saturday nights climb into the ¥120,000 range, so best for weekdays |
| Upscale | Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel (765 rooms) | ¥53,500 | ¥40,500 | Directly connected to Nagoya Station (Sakura-dori Exit side). Reach the ticket gates without going outside, even in rain |

The business tier (¥12,000 to the ¥17,000 range) is clustered on the Shinkansen exit side, and all three hotels are a few minutes’ walk from the ticket gates. Toyoko Inn Nagoya-eki Shinkansen-guchi was listed at ¥12,100 on 21 of its 22 listed November dates (only the 20th, a Friday, was ¥14,200), so your bill stays predictable even if your business-trip dates shift. Guest reviews also frequently praise its location, such as “about a 3-minute walk from the Shinkansen exit,” and 116 of 119 reviews that mentioned proximity to the station were positive (280 guest reviews aggregated by the HotelBank Editorial Team over the past 24 months, November 2024 to October 2026). Comfort Hotel Nagoya Shinkansen-guchi drew comments like “a great deal when booked together with the Shinkansen” (1,082 reviews, November 2024 to October 2026), and Monday nights drop to ¥12,100. Sanco Inn Nagoya Shinkansen-guchi drops to ¥10,800–¥11,500 on Monday and Sunday nights. For the total cost of an extended stay at business hotels in front of Nagoya Station, compared with Tokyo and Osaka, see 30 Nights of Hotel Living in Japan.
In the mid-range tier (¥17,000 to ¥21,000 range), Meitetsu Inn Nagoya Ekimae Shinkansen-guchi belongs to the same Meitetsu Group as the former New Grand and is on the Shinkansen exit side (with 313 rooms, about twice the size of the old hotel). Daiwa Roynet Hotel Nagoya Taikodori-guchi has 272 rooms and lists double-occupancy rooms on all 30 days of November, Saturdays included. If you don’t mind crossing to the Sakura-dori Exit side, you can also choose to stay at the Meitetsu Grand Hotel “while you still can.” Also in front of Nagoya Station, the former Hotel Unizo Nagoya Ekimae continues to operate as a Four Points Flex; we measured its post-rebrand price level in Former Hotel Unizo, Now Four Points Flex: ADR Across 14 Conversions.
The upscale tier (¥26,000 and up) splits between the Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel, directly connected to the station, and Strings Hotel Nagoya and Nagoya Prince Hotel Sky Tower at Sasashima Live. At all of them, Saturday nights run two to three-plus times the Monday–Wednesday rate, so unless it is a special occasion, shifting to Monday–Wednesday is the practical choice. If you want to choose by large public bath, a comparison of five hotels with large baths on the Nagoya Station and Sakae sides (HotelPicks, in Japanese) is a useful reference.

Methodology and Sources
■ Data Sources
Listed prices and reviews were aggregated by the HotelBank Editorial Team from OTA public data and guest reviews (as of October 31, 2026). The all-plan average covers 59 hotels in Nakamura Ward and 74 in Naka Ward; the cheapest-plan median covers 76 hotels in Nakamura Ward. Reviews: 280 for Toyoko Inn Nagoya-eki Shinkansen-guchi and 1,082 for Comfort Hotel Nagoya Shinkansen-guchi (both November 2024 to October 2026). The history of the former hotel and the redevelopment is based on the public documents and media reports listed below.
■ Assumptions
This article contains no revenue or total-cost estimates. All prices are per room for two guests, tax included. The all-plan average is the mean of listed prices including breakfast plans and higher room grades; the cheapest-plan median is the median of the lowest rate for each hotel and stay date. Because these are separate aggregations, the hotel counts differ. Price tiers are a guide based on the November cheapest-plan median, not a ranking.
■ Limitations
Listed prices may not match the amount actually paid and may change. Months from October 2026 onward reflect listed prices for bookings still open, not final figures. The use of the former hotel’s upper floors was checked within the scope of public information, not by on-site inspection.
