In March 2026, the number of visitors to Japan from the United States reached 376,000 (+9.7% year on year), a record high for any single month, while the Q1 cumulative total hit 803,000 (+12.1% YoY) (Source: JNTO Japan-bound visitor statistics). Behind this growth are tailwinds from school holidays and cherry-blossom demand, as well as Japan’s rising rank as a popular destination in the luxury travel market. At the same time, “English doesn’t get through” and “lack of multilingual signage” continue to rank high among US travelers’ complaints about hotels (Source: Japan Tourism Agency Consumption Trend Survey of International Visitors), making the quality of English-language service a competitive factor that influences repeat-visit rates. In this article, the HotelBank Editorial Team draws on English-language reviews compiled from hotel-industry review data to publish a satisfaction ranking by four grades for 200 hotels that have collected 30 or more English-language reviews across six areas — Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo and Naha. At the same time, we visualize the “gap between English-language and Japanese-language scores” to identify hotels with uniform language handling — the property groups most likely to become repeat-visit candidates for US travelers.
Metric Definitions Used in This Article
- English-language review score: The average overall score of reviews posted in English (January 2024 to April 2026). Mostly written by guests from English-speaking markets such as the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Singapore.
- Japanese-language review score: The average overall score of reviews posted in Japanese (January 2024 to April 2026).
- Scope of analysis: From 1,553 hotels with 30 or more guest rooms in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka, Hokkaido and Okinawa that have collected 30 or more English-language reviews, the TOP 50 by grade were extracted for a total of 200 hotels (50 Luxury, 50 High-Grade, 50 Upper and 50 Economy).
- ADR (average daily rate): The average of selling prices published on OTAs for May to July 2026. Per-room rate for double occupancy (tax included), averaged across all plans. Differs from actual transacted prices.

US Visitors Hit a March Record of 376K — Lodging Preferences Shift Toward “Stay-Focused, Experience-Focused”
According to JNTO’s latest statistics, US visitors to Japan in March 2026 totaled 375,900, a record high for any single month. The +9.7% YoY growth resulted from the cherry-blossom season getting into full swing from late March, overlapping with school-holiday demand timed to April’s Easter. The Q1 (January to March) cumulative total of 803,000 (+12.1% YoY) stands at roughly 1.7 times the level of the same period in pre-pandemic 2019.
US travelers’ itineraries are noticeably lengthening; the “Best of Japan” package proposed by Classic Vacations for affluent Americans is a 14-night course that, in addition to Tokyo and Kyoto, tours Hakone, Takayama, Kanazawa, Hiroshima and Nara. Survey results also show that 60% of luxury travelers prioritize hotels with excellent restaurants (Source: travelvoice.jp), making “the overall value of the stay experience” — rather than nightly rate — the criterion of choice. Meanwhile, the Japan Tourism Agency’s Consumption Trend Survey of International Visitors found that 32.9% of foreign tourists cite “being unable to communicate with facility or store staff” as a point of dissatisfaction. The hotels earning high ratings from US travelers can be seen as the property group that has structurally resolved this English-communication barrier.
English-Language Scores Exceed Japanese-Language Scores Across All Grades — The Largest Gap Is in the Economy Band
Comparing the median by grade across the 200 hotels analyzed, English-language review scores exceed Japanese-language scores in every grade, with the difference reaching +0.55 points in the Economy band, +0.45 points in the High-Grade band, +0.38 points in the Upper band and +0.30 points in the Luxury band. The lower the grade, the more pronounced the tendency for “English-speaking guests to rate the hotel higher than Japanese guests.”
What this structural gap means is that, in the Economy to Upper bands, hotels that emphasize English-language service are rated relatively highly by US travelers, while Japanese guests give those same hotels harsher ratings. The nightly-rate range of US visitors to Japan extends not only into the Luxury band but also into the Economy and Upper bands, and a structure emerges in which repeat US travelers discover and return to “hotels with good English service and good value.” For details on how the evaluation criteria of Japanese guests and inbound guests specifically differ, our prior analysis examined the Tokyo area in depth on the same theme.

Evaluation by Category — Cleanliness Tops the List, Location Comes Last
Aggregating the median English-language scores by grade across four basic categories (cleanliness, communication, location and facilities), “cleanliness” was the top-rated category in every grade, recording 4.92 in the Luxury band and 4.73 even in the Economy band. The “cleanliness” for which Japanese hotels are praised worldwide stands out as an unshakable strength in English-language reviews as well.
Worth noting is the rating for the “communication” category: 4.87 in the Luxury band, 4.80 in the High-Grade band, 4.79 in the Upper band and 4.69 in the Economy band — a narrow spread of just 0.18 points between grades. Even in the Economy band, hotels that invest in English-language service can earn hospitality ratings on par with the High-Grade band. By contrast, the “location” category is relatively low across all grades at 4.67 to 4.85; while proximity to stations and access to sightseeing spots are also evaluation points for English-speaking guests, they tend not to draw ratings as outstandingly high as cleanliness or hospitality.

By Area — Hokkaido and Kyoto Lead in English-Language Ratings, Fukuoka Has the Largest Gap with Japanese
Comparing the median English-language scores across the six areas, Hokkaido (4.64), Kyoto (4.63), Okinawa (4.61) and Tokyo (4.60) cluster above the 4.60 line. Hokkaido is an area where winter repeat demand from affluent Western travelers has taken hold in places such as Niseko, Furano and Jozankei, and many properties there treat English-language service as an operational necessity. Kyoto, with its ancient-capital image, has strong drawing power for Western tourists, and machiya (townhouse) hotels and rebranded ryokan that invest in English-language hospitality earn high ratings.
Fukuoka has the largest English-Japanese gap of the six areas (English 4.58 vs. Japanese 3.81, a difference of +0.77); although the sample is small at six hotels, the structure of “harsh ratings from Japanese guests but a warm reception from English-speaking guests” comes into sharp relief. This is also consistent with the market characteristics of a high proportion of Korean and Taiwanese travelers and a relatively low proportion of Japanese travelers.

English vs. Japanese Scatter Plot — Discovering “Hotels with Uniform Language Handling”
Plotting the English-language and Japanese-language scores of all 200 hotels on a scatter plot reveals clear distribution patterns by grade. Hotels close to the diagonal line (i.e., where ratings agree between languages) can be regarded as properties able to deliver consistent hospitality quality regardless of whether guests are English-speaking or Japanese. Conversely, hotels far above the diagonal show the pattern of “English-guest rating >> Japanese rating” — property groups that have built operations specialized for US travelers or have focused on experience design aimed at English-speaking markets.
Representative examples of the hotel group close to the diagonal (uniform language handling) include Palace Hotel Tokyo (English 4.85 / Japanese 4.81), The Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho (4.77 / 4.78) and HOSHINOYA Tokyo (4.64 / 4.67). These have the quality of “being highly rated at the same level by both US travelers and Japanese guests,” which can be called an ideal position in the repeat market.

TOP 10 Hotels with Uniform Language Handling — The Strongest Candidates for the US Repeat Market
The TOP 10 hotels with the smallest difference (absolute value) between English-language and Japanese-language scores are shown below. These are a hotel group “rated highly at the same level by both English-speaking guests and Japanese guests” and are the strongest candidates for US travelers’ repeat-visit preferences. As a common trait, they maintain high scores above 4.5 in both English and Japanese, suggesting stability at an international standard across hospitality, facilities and operations.

TOP 10 US-Specialized Hotels — English-Language Ratings Far Exceed Japanese-Language Ratings
Conversely, extracting the hotel group whose English-language scores far exceed their Japanese-language scores reveals a polarized structure of “well received by English-speaking guests but harshly rated by Japanese guests.” These are a property group optimizing experience design and operations for English-speaking customers — cases where channel investment in the US and English-speaking markets has resulted in high ratings.
For example, the top-ranked Hoshino Resorts OMO5 Tokyo Otsuka (星野リゾート OMO5東京大塚) (English 4.67 / Japanese 1.88, a difference of +2.79) may have had its rating boosted because experience-type content such as the “neighborhood-walk OMO Rangers” offered by Hoshino Resorts’ OMO brand becomes a fresh tourism experience for English-speaking guests. On the other hand, the gap with Japanese guests’ expectations is also large, and a structure exists in which “operations optimized for English-speaking markets” come across as falling short from the perspective of Japanese guests.

The Midscale Band Becomes the Receptacle for US-Traveler Repeats
Conventionally, the industry has widely shared the perception that US travelers’ lodging preferences concentrate in the Luxury band, but this analysis reveals a different structure. The TOP 20 for both the High-Grade band (median ADR ¥44,500) and the Upper band (median ¥35,000) include numerous highly rated hotels with English-language scores of 4.65 or above. Specific examples — such as Hotel The Celestine Kyoto Gion (High-Grade, English 4.67), MIMARU Kyoto Nijo Castle (Upper, English 4.68) and NOHGA HOTEL Kyoto (Upper, English 4.72) — show that machiya-rebranded, condominium-type and design hotels are earning steady support from English-speaking guests.
Among repeat US travelers, the tendency is expanding to use a luxury hotel on the first visit to Japan and then, from the second visit onward, to seek “local experiences” in the midscale band. This is consistent with the “shift from prestige to experience” that Discover Japan and travelvoice.jp present as a 2026 trend. By country, while China saw a sharp decline of minus 60%, Taiwan, South Korea and the US are driving an inbound tectonic shift. Hotel groups in the ADR ¥30,000 to ¥60,000 range with uniform English-language handling are highly likely to become the main receptacle of the US-traveler repeat market over the next three to five years.
Implications for Mid-Tier Hotel Management and Inbound-Reception Staff
From this analysis, we organize the implications for mid-tier hotel management, inbound-reception improvement staff and OTA revenue managers into three points.
First, the quality of English-language service is a high-ROI investment regardless of grade. As the existence of hotel groups earning English-language scores above 4.5 even in the Economy band shows, the presence or absence of English-language service is not constrained by the nightly-price band. Investments in multilingual chatbots, English-language reservation systems and English-language in-house guidance lead to improved US-traveler repeat rates regardless of grade.
Second, it is important to regularly monitor the gap between Japanese-language and English-language scores. When the ratings of English-speaking guests and Japanese guests diverge within the same hotel, operational optimization may be skewed toward one customer segment. Hotels whose gap falls within ±0.20 can be judged to be delivering balanced service across both language markets.
Third, in OTA revenue management, English-language review scores serve as a basis for pricing strategy. Hotels able to maintain English-language scores above 4.7 have room to raise prices for US travelers. Because review scores can serve as basis data for revising price elasticity upward, a structure that integrates the management of OTA pricing and review aggregation is desirable.
Please note: The review scores in this article aggregate reviews posted between January 2024 and April 2026, and each hotel’s score continues to fluctuate daily after the aggregation period. ADR is the average of selling prices published on OTAs at the time of the survey, and it fluctuates as the check-in date approaches. This ranking does not recommend any specific hotel or chain; its purpose is data-based trend analysis.
