Hotels.com conducted an international survey on “hotel selection” across 10 regions worldwide. According to this survey, Japanese people rank second, just behind Mexicans, in enjoying the process of booking hotels for travel, with over 80% of respondents stating that they enjoy the hotel reservation process.

On the other hand, the percentage of those who prefer to leave the selection and booking of accommodations to someone else is less than 40%, ranking just above the UK, where this percentage is the lowest. These results highlight regional differences in attitudes toward travel planning. For instance, while Mexicans enjoy selecting and booking accommodations, they would prefer to leave it to others if possible. Conversely, although the British don’t particularly enjoy this process, they tend to handle it themselves. In contrast, Japanese people enjoy this process and prefer not to delegate it. Additionally, about 40% of Japanese respondents indicated that they plan their trips several months in advance, reflecting a strong commitment to preparation and a desire to fully enjoy their vacations.

As for the factors that take the most time during hotel reservations, the most common response from Japanese participants was “selecting a hotel” (45%), followed by “deciding on a location” (37%), “choosing a room type” (33%), and “reading reviews” (30%). However, when it comes to the number of hotels considered during the booking process, Japan has the fewest on average worldwide, at 7.5 hotels, which is about half the number compared to Norway’s 13.4.
The most important factor for Japanese people when booking hotels is “cost,” with 80% considering it a priority. In response to this price-consciousness, Hotels.com is running a “Big Summer and Autumn Holiday Sale,” offering over 25% off on bookings at selected hotels both domestically and internationally for Hotels.com members.

Additionally, Hotels.com offers convenient features for Japanese travelers who enjoy the hotel booking process. For example, the “Trip Planner” allows users to create itineraries, plan trips, and share ideas with friends and family, while displaying reserved items and saved itineraries. The “Smart Shopping” feature serves as an accommodation comparison tool, enabling users to compare prices, ratings, amenities, and more, helping them to choose better accommodations.
This survey was conducted online by the research company OnePoll from March 28 to April 12, 2024, among 12,500 adult leisure travelers who stayed at hotels in 10 regions: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, South Korea, and Japan.
