The background of large-scale mixed-use facilities being planned in Yokohama City

The planning of large-scale mixed-use facilities in Yokohama City can be attributed to the steady recovery of inbound tourism demand, especially post-COVID. Tokyo, Japan’s largest tourist city, borders Yokohama, which is also a highly popular spot. Notable tourist attractions include “Yokohama Landmark Tower” and “Yamashita Park.”

However, “overtourism” has recently troubled popular tourist destinations, with increased foreign tourists expected to boost the economy on one hand but causing concerns about the impact on residents’ lives due to excessive visitor numbers on the other. While merchants desire more visitors, residents face the challenge of having a limit, making it a difficult issue.

In this context, the plans for large-scale mixed-use facilities in Yokohama City serve as an effective means to alleviate overtourism by distributing tourists more evenly across existing popular spots. Simultaneously, by attracting international hotel brands, there’s potential to further promote Yokohama City as an internationally recognized tourist destination.
