Otetsutabi Co., Ltd. has launched its “Autumn Foliage Special 2024,” a program that offers participants the opportunity to enjoy short-term work while experiencing Japan’s famous autumn foliage. This special initiative is designed to recruit workers for jobs near some of Japan’s best autumn foliage spots, allowing participants to work while taking in beautiful scenery and enjoy a solo journey at a reduced cost.

Otetsutabi, a platform combining “help” and “travel,” connects regions facing seasonal labor shortages, such as farms and accommodations, with people who wish to experience travel while working. Participants cover their own transportation costs, but in return, local hosts provide free lodging, allowing participants to earn wages while keeping accommodation expenses low.

According to Japan’s Tourism Agency, domestic travel in Japan is on a downward trend due to rising prices, and Otetsutabi is gaining attention as a new travel style that reduces financial burden. Participants can work to earn income while staying for free, and enjoy sightseeing in their free time, making this a popular option among young people who want to save on travel costs. Furthermore, with the increase in tourists during the autumn season, many areas experience a shortage of workers, which provides a valuable opportunity for participants to support the local economy through their labor. Approximately 93% of Otetsutabi users participate solo, and through their work, they enjoy encounters with locals and fellow workers.

Founded in 2018 with the vision of “creating a world where the truly good people and regions across Japan are appreciated,” Otetsutabi began its service in 2019. By adding the purpose of helping local communities, Otetsutabi attracts visitors to areas even without major tourist attractions, addressing labor shortages in farms and facilities and fostering new interest in these regions, with the aim of creating “regional fans.” According to a participant survey, over 86% expressed a desire to revisit, and about 60% have continued to maintain relationships with the regions they visited. There are even reports nationwide of cases where participation has led to relocation, settlement, or employment.

Japan’s population is expected to decline further, with the effects anticipated to be even more serious in rural areas. Otetsutabi aims to foster a circulation of people to rural areas, supporting regional economies while building connections that can help sustain communities in times of future challenges.
