The “Yakushima University Project,” organized by the Yakushima Academy, has been selected for the Japan Tourism Agency’s FY2024 “Sustainable Tourism Content Advancement Model Project” and is set to begin its demonstration phase. This project aims to strengthen the interpretative skills of guides by introducing the rich natural and cultural heritage of Yakushima, a UNESCO World Heritage site, from various perspectives. Specifically, the project will share the essence of Yakushima’s regional resources through online events, in-person events, and original tours. As part of a broader digital transformation (DX) effort, the project will also implement AI chatbots and leverage Starlink’s satellite communication services to expand information dissemination channels. This is intended to better meet the increasing needs of inbound tourists.
The project also aims to create a virtuous cycle that protects Yakushima’s tourism resources and ensures the island remains an attractive destination by allocating a portion of the tour fees to guide training and environmental conservation. Starting this July, the project has been hosting the online event series “Discover Yakushima,” which delves into a different theme each session to offer new perspectives and insights that make a visit to Yakushima even more enjoyable. Notable participants include Hiroshi Obara, the eco-tour guide who led the search for the “legendary giant cedar” in an NHK documentary, as well as young guides trained through last year’s guide training program.
Additionally, the project will explore live streaming using Starlink, with plans to showcase Yakushima’s natural beauty to the world. This fall, a live broadcast from a canyoning tour is planned, followed by another broadcast in late November to highlight Yakushima’s winter charm. As for in-person events, “Yakushima Night,” focusing on the island’s history and folk songs, will be held in Tokyo on August 23. This event will offer a sensory experience of Yakushima, including a tasting of local Yakushima shochu.
Furthermore, the popular original tours from last year, initiated by “Yakushima University,” will be offered again this year. These tours will delve into various themes, such as Yakushima’s nature, folk performing arts, and history, under the guidance of experts. The goal is to reveal aspects of Yakushima that are often missed in standard tours.
The “AI Yakushima Chatbot” is also being developed as part of this project, continuously learning and evolving based on feedback from visitors and local guides. This tool aims to provide tourists with a highly satisfying travel experience, with plans to further optimize data and expand available information this year. The chatbot will also offer enhanced English support, ensuring that inbound tourists can enjoy a more diverse and fulfilling travel experience.
