As the scorching heat of summer continues to intensify, many people are considering a trip to a cooler destination to escape the oppressive humidity. In response to this, Hankyu Travel International conducted a survey on domestic summer resorts, highlighting their unique characteristics, popularity, and the reasons behind their appeal.
With the increasing severity of summer heat in Japan, more and more people are seeking relief from the humidity and harsh sunlight. When asked in the survey, “Have you ever thought about visiting a summer resort?” 67.0% of respondents answered “Yes.” This indicates that a majority of people are looking to refresh themselves in a cool climate surrounded by abundant nature.
Japan, with about 70% of its land covered by forests, is home to numerous attractive summer resorts. With so many options available, it can be challenging to choose a destination. To assist with this, Hankyu Travel conducted a survey that revealed the most popular summer resorts in Japan.

The top-ranked resort is Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture, with 52.7% of the vote. Located in the Chuo Highlands at an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters, Karuizawa is a popular summer resort known for its lush forests and cool spots like Shiraito Falls and Kumoba Pond. Developed by foreign missionaries during the Meiji era, it has become a retreat frequented by many notable figures. Visitors can enjoy walking and outdoor activities in nature, explore historical buildings and churches, or indulge in shopping at trendy spots. Additionally, a new commercial facility directly connected to the north exit of Karuizawa Station is scheduled to open in 2026, making this destination even more appealing.

The second most popular resort is Furano in Hokkaido, with 52.4% of the vote. Furano is famous for its beautiful natural scenery, particularly its lavender fields and flower gardens. The surrounding area offers rural landscapes and views of the Tokachi Mountain Range, providing a refreshing escape into nature. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of gourmet experiences, such as dairy products unique to Hokkaido, soup curry, and soft serve ice cream made with melons or lavender.
The third place goes to Nasu Highlands in Tochigi Prefecture. Nasu Highlands is easily accessible from the Tokyo metropolitan area, being about 1 hour and 10 minutes by Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nasushiobara Station. Spanning elevations from around 300 to 1,200 meters, the area offers a wealth of outdoor activities, including mountain climbing, hiking, cycling, and camping in its expansive natural surroundings. Nasu is also famous for its hot springs, where visitors can enjoy a relaxing soak in the baths.

In fourth place is Kamikochi in Nagano Prefecture, located at an elevation of 1,500 meters, where temperatures stay around 23°C even in midsummer, making it a perfect summer retreat. Kamikochi is one of Japan’s most famous mountain scenic spots, known for its majestic mountains, clear rivers, and ponds, as well as its rich natural beauty and biodiversity.
Other popular summer resorts include Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture, Oku-Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture, Kiyosato Highlands in Yamanashi Prefecture, Lake Towada straddling Akita and Aomori Prefectures, Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture, and Mount Rokko in Hyogo Prefecture. These resorts offer cool climates and stunning natural scenery, making them ideal for a summer getaway. Many of these destinations also provide a variety of experiences, such as sightseeing, museum visits, and shopping, allowing for a diverse range of activities during your stay.
