Resorttrust Inc. has announced the “Resorttrust Group Nature Positive Declaration,” outlining the group’s commitment to protecting and restoring biodiversity and natural capital. This declaration serves as a guiding framework for their efforts to address the pressing global challenge of biodiversity loss, which is considered one of humanity’s most critical crises alongside climate change.

The concept of “nature positive” refers to actions aimed at reversing biodiversity loss and putting natural environments on a path to recovery. This direction was formalized at the United Nations-led COP15 conference in December 2022, where the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was adopted. Japan has also taken steps in this direction, with the Cabinet approval of the Biodiversity Strategy 2023-2030 in March 2023.

Given that the group’s business activities both benefit from and potentially impact biodiversity and natural capital, it has identified the conservation of biodiversity, reduction of CO2 emissions, and minimization of plastic waste and food loss as material issues. Recognizing nature as a core and strategic risk management priority alongside climate change, the group has aligned its disclosures with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) recommendations as of June 2024.

In support of the Japanese government’s vision for a “nature-harmonious society” by 2050, the group has set its sights on achieving a “nature positive” state by 2030. Specific measures include thorough environmental assessments in collaboration with local governments and organizations during hotel and golf course developments to ensure harmony with surrounding ecosystems. The group also plans to promote nature tourism that leverages regional natural assets, adopt green energy, implement biodiversity-conscious business practices, and foster resource circulation. Additional initiatives include encouraging the use of local ingredients to support regional consumption and production and creating opportunities for cultural experiences to contribute to local communities.

By prioritizing sustainability management, the group is dedicated to transparent information sharing and fostering partnerships with governments and other companies to create new value and contribute to a sustainable society. Under the banner of the “Resorttrust Group Nature Positive Declaration,” the group aims to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders and build a future that coexists harmoniously with nature. It will continue to pursue these efforts to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society. Details of its sustainability principles, actions, and related data are available on its Sustainability Site.

Additionally, in October 2024, the group endorsed the revised “Keidanren Declaration of Biodiversity and Action Guidelines” proposed by Keidanren and the Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund. By participating in the Keidanren Biodiversity Initiative, which provides actionable guidance for biodiversity conservation, the group reaffirms its commitment to working with society to build a sustainable future.
