Marugame City in Kagawa Prefecture has been selected for the “Top 100 Sustainable Destinations in the World” by Green Destinations, an international certification organization promoting sustainable tourism. The city’s recognition was largely attributed to the circular tourism initiatives led by Ooedo-Onsen-Monogatari Hotel Reoma no Mori and NEW Reoma World, both operated by the Ooedo-Onsen-Monogatari Group. Their initiatives were highly evaluated and contributed significantly to Marugame City’s achievement.

Green Destinations selects 100 regions worldwide each year that demonstrate excellence in promoting sustainable tourism. Marugame City’s selection this year reflects the sustainable, food-recycling-based initiatives implemented by Hotel Reoma no Mori and NEW Reoma World. Both facilities have built a circular tourism system that supports community development while contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Specifically, food waste generated from the buffet at Hotel Reoma no Mori is collected by specialized contractors and processed into fertilizer. The fertilizer is then used in the Edible Garden located in the Oriental Trip area of NEW Reoma World. Herbs and other produce harvested from the garden are subsequently used in dishes served at WOOLIE’s Restaurant inside NEW Reoma World. This cycle enables the effective reuse of food waste as a resource, helping to reduce environmental impact.
Both Hotel Reoma no Mori and NEW Reoma World expressed that Marugame City’s recognition as one of the Top 100 Sustainable Destinations in the World serves as motivation to further advance their efforts as members of the local community. They aim to continue promoting innovative initiatives that contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.
