Booking.com has released its travel destination rankings for the 2025 summer season, based on accommodation search data from its website. The survey covered accommodations searched for check-in dates between June 1 and August 31, 2025, with the search period running from February 15 to April 15 of the same year. According to the results, Tokyo ranked third worldwide.

Among global leisure travelers, 77% (57% in Japan) expressed a desire to travel abroad within the next few months, and 48% overall (36% in Japan) plan to spend more on travel compared to the previous year. This indicates that travel demand in summer 2025 is expected to be strong. Popular destinations include beach resorts, city sightseeing spots, and regions offering opportunities to experience new cultures, with Tokyo joining Egypt’s coral reefs and the beaches of southern Spain among the top picks.

In the family travel ranking, Tokyo placed fourth. The survey found that 53% of parents with children (36% in Japan) considered travel this year their “top priority,” with a focus not merely on rest but on exposure to diverse cultures and experiences. A large majority of parents—85% globally (82% in Japan)—want to provide their children with new experiences, highlighting a trend of seeking learning and growth through travel. Technology also plays an increasing role in preparation, with 85% of family travelers (74% in Japan) using AI tools to streamline their planning.

Tokyo also ranked second in the ranking of destinations for couples. In 2025, there is a growing emphasis on valuing “memories over material goods.” Seventy-three percent of millennials, 74% of Gen Z, and 69% of baby boomers responded that they would be happier receiving a trip as a gift rather than physical items. Reflecting this shift in values, 45% of travelers overall (36% in Japan) plan to travel with their partners.
