Lightec Co., Ltd., a company long engaged in the manufacturing and sales of disposable lighters, has announced the 5th anniversary of its resort hotel “HOTEL LOCAL BASE” located in Miyakojima, Okinawa Prefecture. In recent years, Lightec has been focusing on addressing environmental issues in Okinawa, particularly in Miyakojima—a small island surrounded by beautiful seas but burdened by large amounts of marine debris, especially plastic waste. In response to this issue, Lightec began actively tackling environmental challenges in 2019, using “HOTEL LOCAL BASE” as a base for these efforts in Miyakojima.

HOTEL LOCAL BASE operates with the aim of becoming a “local hub,” showing respect for the nature and culture of Miyakojima. Beyond serving as a lodging facility for tourists, the hotel also functions as a gathering place for local residents and has hosted a variety of community-based events. The hotel is committed to environmentally friendly construction and operations, including reducing CO2 emissions during construction by using steel frames and implementing a system that reuses stored rainwater for watering flowerbeds. Additionally, some parts of the hotel feature recycled flooring made from scaffold boards, and raised flooring to enhance ventilation, minimizing the use of concrete while improving the durability of wood. The construction of the facility, which took approximately 10 months, was carried out with minimal waste, including reusing leftover cedar wood as furniture within the facility.
The hotel also pays close attention to environmental considerations in the products and amenities it offers, such as providing animal-free menus and low-environmental-impact amenities. It promotes local production for local consumption through initiatives like circular farming, using horse manure from Miyako horses on its own farm, and actively adopting materials produced in Miyakojima. In the hotel’s roasting facility, “HASABA COFFEE,” coffee grounds are reused as insect repellents and fertilizers.

Lightec is also actively involved in marine conservation activities outside the hotel. The company is addressing Miyakojima’s waste issues through the “Save Miyako Blue Project,” in collaboration with the general incorporated association Nereis, and has installed designated trash bins within the hotel to encourage visitors to participate in beach cleaning activities. Rightec plans to maintain its environmentally conscious approach, aiming to balance sustainable tourism with community contributions while preserving Miyakojima’s beautiful nature and culture. The company views addressing environmental challenges as essential to its continued business operations and has adopted the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) as part of its management policy, striving for a sustainable future.
