SPACER Inc., in collaboration with Seibu Holdings Inc., has begun a trial of its luggage delivery service, “pikuraku PORTER in Tokyo,” starting September 2, 2024, in the Tokyo metropolitan area. This service allows tourists to drop off their luggage at smart lockers installed at stations along the Seibu Railway line, from which it is delivered to their hotel on the same day. By simply placing their luggage in one of these lockers, users can travel freely without the burden of carrying their belongings, allowing them to enjoy sightseeing with ease.
The service, known as “pikuraku PORTER,” involves dropping off luggage at smart lockers located at stations within specified hours, after which it is delivered to the customer’s hotel on the same day. This service has already been launched in the Osaka and Onomichi areas, and the expansion into the Tokyo metropolitan area is expected to attract even more tourists. By reducing congestion and delays in public transportation during peak tourist periods, the service is also expected to contribute to easing issues related to overtourism. Additionally, local residents will benefit from minimized disruptions to their daily lives caused by an influx of tourists.
The trial of “pikuraku PORTER in Tokyo” will run from September 2, 2024, to March 31, 2025. Luggage drop-off is available until 2 PM, and delivery to designated hotels is scheduled to be completed by 7 PM. However, users are advised that delays may occur due to weather or traffic conditions. The service covers around 500 hotels within the Tokyo metropolitan area, including key areas such as Shinjuku, Ginza, and Maihama. Service fees range from 1,900 yen to 2,800 yen, with promotional rates of 1,700 yen to 2,400 yen available until October 31, 2024.
Smart lockers have been installed at Ikebukuro Station (outside the underground gates), Shinjuku Station (outside the main entrance and north exit gates), and Toshimaen Station (inside the gates), among others. The lockers are easy to use, requiring only a few simple steps on a touch panel to deposit luggage. The system supports Japanese, English, Korean, and Chinese, ensuring accessibility for foreign tourists.
SPACER Inc. has been working on developing its smart lockers, “SPACER,” in an effort to revolutionize the coin locker industry, which has remained unchanged for over 40 years. By smartifying all lockers, the company aims to enhance user convenience and create new services through locker-based exchanges. SPACER will continue to strive toward becoming a company that leads the future of all exchange services through locker innovation.
